Proving that romance can blossom even in the direst and most seemingly disadvantageous of circumstance, a pure-hearted Kazakh settler and a Kyrgyz woman find each other's hearts, their love rising like a phoenix out of the ruins of the Afghani wars, during the aftermath of the Iron Curtain's fall and in a region of the world that has been racked by tumult. Each of their personal histories, taken apart, seem dead-end and hopeless; Temür is a thirty-year-old fisherman whose lack-of-success on the Aral Sea has prompted him to give up on his chosen career , especially given the fact that the Aral has all but dried up and is now unpopulated by fish. Amira, who hails from Kyrgyzstan, foresees a future that is equally bleak, given the fact that her husband recently left home and went off to fight the mujhadeen. In each other, the lovers perceive an opportunity for escape and redemption. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Gillies MacKinnon directed this $5.6 million production with a screenplay by his brother, Billy MacKinnon. The film adapts the 1992 autobiographical novel by Esther Freud (Sigmund Freud's granddaughter) about hippie misadventures in North Africa in 1972, as described by a five-year-old girl. Disenchanted with the dreary conventions of English life, 25-year-old Julia (Kate Winslet) heads for Morocco with her children, six-year-old Lucy (Carrie Mullan) and precocious eight-year-old Bea (Bella Riza). Living at a low-rent Marrakesh hotel, the trio survives on the sale of hand-sewn dolls and a few checks from the girls' father, a London poet who also has a child by another woman. After the girls match their mother with gentle Moroccan acrobat and con man Bilal (Said Taghmaoui), sexual gears are set in motion, and he moves in, serving as a surrogate father. Julia's friend Eva (Sira Stampe) urges Julia to study in Algiers with a revered Sufi master at a school of "the annihilation of the ego," and in another sequence European dandy Santoni invites Julia and the girls to his villa. As finances dwindle, Julia's philosophy is "God will provide," although usually it's Bilal who provides. This film was shot October-November 1997 in Morocco, where Winslet caught a stomach bug. Back in London, she went directly into the hospital and thus missed Titanic's London premiere. The score blends North African music with British-American pop hits of the '60s. The film's title derives from a word game played by the girls. Shown at the 1998 Dinard Festival of British Cinema and the 1998 London Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Based on a true story this emotionally wrenching character study focuses upon a desperate young wife who feigns an entire pregnancy in hopes of convincing her dissatisfied husband to remain with her. Magali's problem comes from the fact that she is so bland and unassuming as to be nearly invisible. Her passivity and inability to form her own opinions grates on her husband Alain, a go-getter radio journalist, and he plans to take a year long assignment in Canada to get away from her. While preparing to leave, his boss, who has been inadvertently led to believe that Magli is pregnant, shows up and tells Alain. The husband's first response is to demand an abortion, but on second thought he decides he would like to become a father after all. Magli, fearing that he will leave, then devises her elaborate ruse. The gravity of her deception increases with that of her pillow-padded abdomen, for when her terminally ill father learns of her fecund condition, he vows that he will remain alive long enough to see his grandbaby. Her sister-in-law, who opted for abortion, is also very supportive and determined to help her through the pregnancy. As the months pass, Magli becomes increasingly cagey and cannily does not give Alain a definite due date. In the end, she solves her problem in a most creative way; it is a solution that spawns surprising consequences. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Based on an award-winning play by Jean-Noel Fenwick, this fact-based drama offers a lively account of the lives and professional struggles of Noble prize-winning research scientists Pierre and Marie Curie. The two meet at the Paris School of Physics & Chemistry in a frosty laboratory. There Pierre (Charles Berling) and fellow researcher Gustave Bemont (Christian Charmetant) are busy with their work when the brash Marie Sklodowska bursts in to join them. She has been assigned there at the request of the school director Rodolphe Schutz (Phillipe Noiret), a man determined to have his school win the coveted Science Academy palmes, the highest honor in the French scientific community. Though she apparently speaks no French, Sklodowska proves her brilliance from the start. When not busy in the lab, Sklodowska and Pierre are busy in the boudoir indulging in another kind of experimentation that leads to love and ultimately marriage. This complicates matters for it is not easy to juggle the rigors of science, antagonistic colleagues, national pride and the demands of a family. Science aficionados in the audience may get a tickle from the cameo appearances by two Nobel laureate physicists, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes and Georges Charpak who show up as delivery men coming to unload a huge truckload of radium-bearing rocks. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Isabella is the much-loved child of a movie producer, growing up in the 1950s. Key moments in her life are seen as she returns each summer to her family's vacation home on the seaside in Tuscany. The argumentative family has its ups and downs, some of them as a result of successes or reverses in the father's moviemaking career. Practically the only member of the family who doesn't fuss and quarrel all the time is Isabella's mother, her father's second wife. All her siblings are the children of the first wife. Isabella has a "toy" that any movie buff would love to play with: a movieola, a machine usually reserved for film editors who can view the film or films they are working on at their own pace, stopping or reversing the action and running it at any speed. The films she plays on hers indicate what stage she is at in her life, as she grows from an insecure girl to a confident woman. This family drama and coming-of-age story is based on the recollections of filmmaker Fiorella Infascelli, who grew up in the household of her producer father Carlo Infascelli. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

As directed by Richard Dembo, the period adventure drama L'Instinct de l'ange (Angel's Wing) unfurls in early 20th century France, where Henry, a wealthy young Frenchman from an aristocratic family, undergoes an extensive cure for tuberculosis at a sanitarium and gets released soon afterward. He longs to join the French flying corps of the Great War - then raging across Europe - but is promptly rejected given the checkered history of his health. Never one to swallow such rejections, Henry - who learned to fly years earlier of his own accord - promptly joins a local fighting squadron and racks up a litany of air victories, which piques the suspicion of his military colleagues. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Titled after the name of a little girl's dress size, the coming-of-age drama 36 Fillette follows a couple days in the life of 14-year-old Lili (Delphine Zentout), whose physically mature features contrast with her immature adolescent angst. Away from her home in Paris, she is painfully bored during a summer vacation in a windy little campground near the resort town of Biarritz. She's stuck with her emotionally unavailable parents (Adrienne Bonnet and Jean-Francois Stevenin) and older brother J.P. (Stephane Moquet). After some blatant begging on her part, J.P. eventually agrees to take her out to a disco. They don't have a car, so they hitch a ride from the middle-aged Maurice (Etienne Chicot), who is out cruising in his sports car. Maurice and J.P. go to a disco, but Lili is too young to get in. She spends the evening at a café talking to the celebrity musician Boris Golovine (Jean-Pierre Leaud), but she agrees to meet Maurice for a date at midnight. After much pleading with the doorman, Lili is allowed in to the disco where she dances with Maurice. Eventually, she leaves the club with him and spends the evening in his fancy hotel room. 36 Fillette was written and directed by Catherine Brelliat, who adapted the screenplay from her own semi-autobiographical novel. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Mixing together the erotic and a theme of imminent death, director Michel Deville has fashioned an increasingly unsettling tale, based on the French novel Sur la Terre Comme au Ciel by Rene Belletto. When David (Christophe Malavoy) arrives at the home of Julia (Nicole Garcia) and Graham (Michel Piccoli) to teach guitar to their teenage daughter, a certain attraction starts between the student and teacher. That disappears when Julia seduces David at his apartment, and the two begin an affair, seemingly with the tacit consent of Julia's husband. Meanwhile, David's neighbor keeps snooping around, and at one point David is saved from a mugger just in the nick of time by a man who turns out to be an assassin for hire -- and hired to kill Graham, Julia's husband. As danger looms on the horizon for David, Graham, Julia, and the assassin himself, tension mounts, and someone's violent death seems inevitable. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This strange crime-cum-romance story starts out with the ordinary work-a-day life of Mangin, an apparently straight-and-narrow cop (Gerard Depardieu), and then segues into a love story after he meets Noria, a beautiful Arab woman (Sophie Marceau) who has just been arrested during a drug raid. Mangin grills her, but his buddy, a lawyer of dubious ethics named Lambert (Richard Anconina), gets the woman released. Enamored almost from the beginning, Mangin begins to pursue Noria and soon finds himself faced with making the ethical decision to arrest her -- or not. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Based on a non-fiction bestseller of the same name by Rolf Hochhuth, Eine Liebe In Deutschland is about a tragic and forbidden love affair between Stanislaw, a Polish POW (Piotr Lysak) and Paulina (Hanna Schygulla) a fruit-and-vegetable vendor in a small town in Germany along the border with Switzerland. Their affair would have gone undetected except for the busybody women of the village, and when Stanislaw is picked up by a German stormtrooper (Armin Müller-Stahl) and brought in for a mock trial, he is given a chance to prove his racial purity and so perhaps escape execution. As for Paulina, she is ostracized by the villagers and imprisoned for consorting with someone who was not of the same high Aryan caste as herself. Depressing, yet politically relevant to Poland of the early 1980s, this film by acclaimed director Andrzej Wajda) is an effective and emotional statement on the nature of oppression. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In 1982, legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda fled his homeland and relocated in France to direct this powerful story about the ethical boundaries of power and leadership, which had many parallels to Poland's volatile political situation in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Danton (Gérard Depardieu) and Robespierre (Wojciech Pszoniak) were close friends and fought together in the French Revolution, but by 1793 Robespierre was France's ruler, determined to wipe out opposition with a series of mass executions that became known as the Reign of Terror. Danton, well known as a spokesman of the people, had been living in relative solitude in the French countryside, but he returned to Paris to challenge Robespierre's violent rule and call for the people to demand their rights. Robespierre, however, could not accept such a challenge, even from a friend and colleague, and he blocked out a plan for the capture and execution of Danton and his allies. Wajda remained in France until 1989, when the collapse of Communist rule made it possible for him to return to his homeland. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Lola Lane and James Craig play explorers working on behalf of the British government. Lane and Craig have been assigned to venture deep into the wilds of Africa to retrieve the sacred skull of a long-deceased Sultan. Whoever possesses the skull will have total control over the native population--which is why several sinister gentlemen with Teutonic accents (America wasn't in the war yet, so no nationalities, please) also covet the skull. A reactivated volcano provides a rip-roaring climax for this Universal second feature. Zanzibar was based on a pair of short stories written by Maurice Tombragel and Maurice Wright, who collaborated on the screenplay. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
