A rich young man decides to find out how the other half lives in the comedy Adieu, Plancher Des Vaches!. Nicolas (Niko Tarielashvili) is the oldest son in a wealthy family headed by his mother (Lily Lavina), a successful businesswoman with a busy schedule, and his father (Otar Iosseliani), an eccentric alcoholic with a weakness for wine and model trains. Nicolas seems to have mixed feelings about his family's privileged lifestyle; his best friend is a beggar and Nic works in a cafe, where he washes dishes and tries to impress the owner's daughter, who prefers the company of a surly sailor with a motorcycle. One night, Nic sneaks a group of his lower-class buddies into the family wine cellar for an informal fete; Dad soon joins them, striking up a sudden friendship with a wino who tags along. But Nic's flirtation with the less comfortable side of life also leads to friendships with petty criminals, leading him to wonder if the life of the upper classes might not be so bad after all. Adieu, Plancher Des Vaches! was written and directed by Otar Iosseliani, who also gave himself a plum supporting role as Father. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This is the final film in a trilogy by Bernhard Giger that examines a man's struggle to find and defend his personal identity. In Winterstadt, a young wanderer discovers himself through his interactions with people in a small town, and in Der Gemeindeprasident, a mayor fights hard to maintain his personal and public ethical standards. Now in this drama, a young man vacillates between abiding the law and a life of crime. Tom (Andreas Loeffel) has been coerced into informing on his underworld buddies by a tough, aggressive police inspector (Bruno Ganz). Although he did not volunteer the information, Tom hides both his criminal past and current connections to the police from his girlfriend of the moment. His main concern is to live the best life he can regardless of what happens to others; he does not question his own identity as long as he has the amenities he wants. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this carefully paced human drama, Mathias Gnädinger skillfully portrays the mayor of a growing town involved in two major crises, neither of which seem within anyone's ability to handle. In one crisis, a celebrated architect has acquired a house with the promise to renovate it, but instead he plans on using the house in speculative real estate deals -- a fact which is sparking protests. The mayor is caught in the middle between the architect, who has helped him in the past, and his sympathy with the protesters who have occupied the house. In the second crisis, a close friend of the mayor's dies in a tragic accident and simply because the man was gay, the widowed mayor is suspected of being a homosexual, a suspicion that could ruin his career in this provincial town. For the first time in his official career, the mayor is faced with personal and professional difficulties that pit his sense of ethics against his political future. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A violinist who has become dispirited by his everyday routine takes a leave of absence from his orchestra and his female companion to run off and join a circus where he drives a tractor and helps set up the tents. His inspiration for this bold move came from an aging elephant trainer who seemed to have more self-esteem and quiet wisdom than anyone else the violinist knew. Once he joins the circus caravan, he meets an attractive woman and thus begins an affair he had never planned on. One day the struggling owners of the circus have yet another crisis -- a performer has an accident and is sent to the hospital -- how can they come up with another act at the last minute, with such limited resources? The answer to that question may lie in the talents of the violinist, each day more involved in the life of the circus than the day before. The sensitive observation of human behavior in this drama adds to its interest, although a completely developed narrative would enhance it all the more. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
