The story of tempestuous Carmen, first told in a short story by Prosper Merimee and made famous in an opera by Georges Bizet, gets a new and striking modern-dress adaptation in this provocative drama with music. Karmen Gei (Jeinaba Diop Gai) is an inmate in a women's prison in Senegal; lusty, impulsive, and looking out for herself at all times, Karmen's uninhibited dancing and sensual demeanor excites the Sapphic passions of Angelique (Stephanie Biddle), the prison's warden, who allows herself to be seduced by the wanton Karmen. Once Angelique falls asleep, Karmen sees the coast is clear and escapes to town, where she is caught by military policeman Col. Lamine Diop (Magaye Adama Niang) after insulting factotums of the nation's military leadership. However, Diop proves no match for Karmen's seductive charms, and after having her way with him, she once again escapes and Diop finds himself behind bars. Karmen arranges for Diop's escape, but it isn't long before he realizes she is using him as a plaything and has little respect for him as a man; however, by this time he's too deeply addicted to Karmen's passions to turn away. While inspired in part by Bizet's opera, Karmen Gai boats an all-new score by David Murray, Julien Jouga, and Doudou Ndiaye Rose that draws on elements of pop, jazz, and Afro-pop for its original themes. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The turning point in the life of Ed Pekurny (Matthew McConaughey) comes thanks to the misfortunes of the NorthWest Broadcasting Company. After two years on the air, their flagship cable channel, True TV, has slid into obscurity due to competition from the The Gardening Channel. Program director Cynthia Topping (Ellen DeGeneres) brainstorms a last ditch effort to save the channel: broadcast one ordinary person's life 24 hours a day, unedited (while he sleeps, the day's highlights will be shown). When the network agrees to the idea, Topping must find the subject of her program. After endless auditions, she lucks upon Ed, a goofy but good-looking video store clerk. Ed has little time to get used to his new shadow, a three man video crew, before the show becomes a hit. Suddenly Ed's a cultural icon with fan clubs, stalkers, and imitators, but the media saturation has it's effects on his friends and family, who are now part of the program. Ed alienates his proud brother, Ray (Woody Harrelson), by falling in love with his girlfriend, Shari (Jenna Elfman). His estranged father Hank (Dennis Hopper) reappears after abandoning the family and creates tension between Ed and Ray's mother, Jeanette (Sally Kirkland) and her wheelchair-bound second husband, Al (Martin Landau). When Ed realizes the phenomenon has turned on him, he convinces Topping to stop the ordeal, but not her boss, Whitaker (Rob Reiner). To regain his life, Ed must find a way to cancel EDtv. ~ Ron Wells, Rovi

There he spies Camile, a cop-in-training who cannot bear to use a gun. He decides to help her accept the violence inherent in policework; in exchange he wants her to act as his body guard while he tries to find the would be killer. Two young bohemians try to make a life together as the end of the century looms before them in this thoughtful comedy-drama. Coyote (Mitsou Gelinas) is an impetuous young woman who meets Chomi (Patrick Labbe), a moody young man studying filmmaking. Coyote and Chomi fall in love, bound by their shared fascination with the past and the city's crumbling geography as the end of the 1990s signals the dawn of a new era. Coyote and Chomi's romance is not always harmonious, and the couple find themselves frequently splitting up, only to quickly reunite. However, Coyote begins to look for more stability in their relationship when she discovers that she is pregnant. Set in the 1960s this comedy, based on the autobiographical novel of the same title by Haitian author Dany Laferriere this comedy centers on the sexploits of an aspiring African writer living in Montreal. When not clacking away on his novel (same as the title), he is out picking up white women from the local cafes. Known only as "Man," his women remain similarly anonymous, though he does ascribe them names based on the qualities he uses to differentiate them. "Miz Literature" is his main squeeze. The whole idea behind the film is to take a deeper look at racial stereotypes. Unfortunately it only succeeds in leeringly reinforcing them. The title of this film generated considerable controversy in the US. Many major newspapers refused to run the complete title, opting for ellipsis or publishing it in French. The NAACP lobbied unsuccessfully to have the name changed and some theaters refused to show the film. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Filmed in 1984, The Gunrunner didn't receive a widespread release until 1989, thanks in great part to the presence of Kevin Costner in the cast. The future Oscar-winning actor is herein cast as the title character, an illicit "arms dealer" named Ted Beaubein. Set in 1926 Montreal, the story finds Beaubein trying to muscle in on the speakeasy racket, a decision prompted by his fondness for "speak" owner Maude (Sara Botsford). Things get hairy when Rosalyn (Mitch Martin), the socialite girlfriend of Beaubein's late brother George (Ron Lea), is kidnapped by the Mob. Attempting to deliver the ransom money, Ted discovers what the audience has known all along -- that no one in his particular circle of friends can be trusted. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
