A short story by Langston Hughes provides the source material for this emotional made-for-TV drama. Ma Jenkins (CCH Pounder) and her adult daughter Cora (Regina Taylor) work as servants for the Studevant family, a wealthy clan living in a small Iowa community in the 1930s. Cora and Ma are also the only African-Americans in town, and they must deal with emotional isolation as well as open and inflammatory racism. When Cora's young daughter succumbs to illness, Cora continues to do her chores for the Studevants, though inside she's devastated. Lizbeth Studevant (Cherry Jones), the lady of the house, has a daughter, Jessie (Molly Graham), and given Lizbeth's busy social schedule, Cora spends much of her time watching over the child. Cora begins to project her maternal feelings on Jessie, and the child grows to love Cora as a member of the family. However, as Jessie grows to adulthood (and is now played by Ellen Muth), Lizbeth begins to feel that Cora has a closer bond with her daughter than she does, and her resentment has ugly consequences. In this stylized adaptation of her 1988 off-Broadway show, singer/actress/comedian Sandra Bernhard explores celebrity, stereotypes, and her own childhood in a series of monologues and musical numbers. Although much of the material comes straight from the original stage show, Bernhard and co-writer John Boskovich updated many of her pop-cultural musings and added several new production numbers. They also turned a one-woman show into something of a mockumentary, staging interviews with Bernhard's fictional manager (Lu Leonard) and adding several additional characters. Most of the action is staged in a theater full of well-heeled African American patrons who slowly leave in disgust at Bernhard's performance, which includes her deadpan fantasies about an imagined gentile childhood, a dalliance with Warren Beatty, and a trip to Studio 54. Originally given a limited release by New Line Cinema in 1990, Without You I'm Nothing was quickly pulled from theaters when the company that produced it went bankrupt. This satirical look at the ambivalent relationship between Hollywood power brokers and African-American performers marked the writing, producing, and directing debut of Robert Townsend. The filmmaker also stars as Bobby Taylor, a struggling actor looking for his big break despite his family's and co-workers' reservations about his chosen career path. While working a day job flipping burgers, Bobby heads out to insulting cattle calls where white casting agents pass judgement on whether he seems "black enough." Meanwhile, he imagines himself playing Sam Spade, Rambo, and other movie heroes rather than the stereotypical roles actually available to him. When Bobby actually does win one such pimp-daddy part, however, he is forced to choose between accepting work that opens doors, but ultimately demeans him and returning to obscurity with his principles intact. Hollywood Shuffle's enormous supporting cast includes a wealth of black actors, from then-unknowns such as Damon Wayans to veterans such as 227 star Helen Martin. Self-financed and filmed on scraps of hand-me-down celluloid, the film helped establish actor Townsend as a director of note and also kick-started the career of co-screenwriter and co-star Keenen Ivory Wayans, who would cast Townsend in his own directorial debut the following year. ~ Brian J.
