Alan Rudolph was the son of Oscar Rudolph, a one-time actor who later directed such low budget films as
Twist Around the Clock and such economical TV fare as "The Lone Ranger." While studying accounting at UCLA, the younger Rudolph dropped out to work in minor production capacities in the Hollywood studio system. As an assistant to director Robert Altman, Rudolph worked on such major
Altman projects as The Long Goodbye (1973) and
Nashville (1975), ultimately getting a chance to direct his own film for Altman's production company,
Welcome to LA (1977). (Rudolph had actually make his directorial bow in 1972, but chose to stay with
Altman for the experience.) Rudolph frequently seemed to be Altman, with his fascination with tiny budgets, favorite cast members, quirky intra-personal character relationships, surrealistic set-piece sequences, and improvisational (if not hallucinatory) plotlines. Even when attempting to make a "mainstream" film like
Made in Heaven (1987), Rudolph still appeared to be operating from another planet. Still, he deserves his faithful fan following if for nothing else than his masterpiece, the breathtakingly inventive

The Z Channel wasn't America's first premium cable outlet specializing in feature films, and it wasn't the most commercially successful, but few, if any, had as strong an impact on the film industry or a more influential list of customers. Based in California and blanketing sections of the state dominated by the movie business, Z Channel had been operating for several years before former screenwriter Jerry Harvey took over as head of programming in 1980. Under the guidance of Harvey and his staff, the channel became a film buff's dream, screening rare classics, important foreign films, and maverick American titles that had fallen through the cracks of commercial distribution. Harvey and his staff also programmed original and uncut versions of films which had only played American theaters in altered form (including Heaven's Gate, Once Upon a Time in America, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and The Leopard) long before the concept of the "director's cut" had currency beyond the most hardcore of film fans. And The Z Channel aggressively championed pictures they believed were overlooked, and programmed deserving Oscar-nominated movies during the Academy's voting period, years before studios began distributing video "screeners" to potential voters. (More than one industry expert has credited Z Channel's showings of Annie Hall as a key factor in the film winning Best Picture.) But Jerry Harvey was also a deeply troubled man, and when legal and economic problems began dogging the company in the late '80s, he snapped, leading to a horrible and tragic murder and suicide. Phyllis, a one-time horror film star, spends her days alone, often lost in her memories as she watches her old films on television, while Lucky works as a repairman and builder, often engaging in brief liaisons with the women he's working for. Phyllis is aware of Lucky's infidelity but isn't terribly concerned; she doesn't mind if he goes elsewhere for sex, as long as he's not looking for anything more serious. A brief romantic liaison between a wealthy European and an American ballet dancer results in a pair of identical twins, who are separated and raised by others shortly after birth. Henry (Matthew Modine) was adopted by Pete (M. Emmet Walsh), an auto mechanic, and Henry grows up to follow in his Pete's footsteps. Emotionally fragile, Henry is in a relationship with Beverly (Lara Flynn Boyle), a rich but painfully shy woman who is terrified by sex. Henry, however, finds his own sexual appetite increasing, and he becomes involved with Rosie (Marisa Tomei), a prostitute living in his neighborhood. The film concerns a sleek and smooth Hollywood studio executive who starts receiving death threats from a disgruntled writer because he has committed the ultimate Hollywood sin -- he promised the writer he would call him back and he never did. This is particularly ironic because the studio executive, Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins), is considered "writer-friendly," spending his days listening to pitches from such noted screenwriters as Buck Henry, who is pushing "The Graduate, Part II" and Alan Rudolph, who is hawking a Bruce Willis action film described as "Ghost meets The Manchurian Candidate." But The Player finds Griffin's comfortable life style in danger of collapse. Willie Nelson plays Doc Jenkins, the title character, who conspires with longtime pal Blackie Buck (Kris Kristofferson) to turn the tables on a shady promoter, Rodeo Rocky (Richard Sarafian), who has Doc signed to a contract that is one step short of indentured servitude. Lesley Ann Warren plays Gilda, an up-and-coming country chanteuse whom Doc is tutoring. The rest of the supporting cast is a mix of veteran character players (Rip Torn, Melinda Dillon) and musicians associated with Nelson (Mickey Raphael, Bee Spears, Jody Payne, Johnny Gimble). There are also plenty of musical numbers featuring Nelson and Kristofferson (solo and duets). This disquieting domestic thriller from writer and director Alan Rudolph was produced by his long-time mentor Robert Altman. Alan Rudolph's first feature Welcome to L.A. displays his characteristic mood of romantic despair utilizing a La Ronde-like circle of sexual adventures and failed affairs centered around song-writer Carroll Barber (Keith Carradine) which spread out through the city. Barber is an aloof womanizer who cannot commit or love and is used by Rudolph to illustrate the loneliness inherent in big-city life. The film, featuring a haunting score by Richard Baskin, is a bit too ambitious for the beginning director. Three young female entertainers on their way to a gig in Las Vegas are stranded in the desert when their car breaks down. A stranger named Andre (Andrew Prine) discovers them on the side of the road and offers assistance, which the girls accept, blinded by his good looks and stylish sheepskin jacket. Unfortunately, they soon learn that Andre is a maniac who keeps a menagerie of half-mad, malnourished women chained in his barn and they are to be the newest additions to his horrible collection. Not only that, but the farm sits in an area that once was used for hydrogen bomb testing, and Andre's father has mutated into a deformed, bloodthirsty monster that must be kept locked in a shed. Coincidentally, one of the girls (Manuella Thiess) bears a striking resemblance to Andre's long-lost mother, and when his twisted mind decides they are one and the same, the girl plays along, hoping to buy time. Meanwhile, an agent (Chuck Niles) who represents the missing entertainers has been hounding the Nevada police to find them.
