"If they move, kill 'em!" Beginning and ending with two of the bloodiest battles in screen history, Sam Peckinpah's classic revisionist Western ruthlessly takes apart the myths of the West. Released in the late '60s discord over Vietnam, in the wake of the controversial Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and the brutal "spaghetti westerns" of Sergio Leone, The Wild Bunch polarized critics and audiences over its ferocious bloodshed. One side hailed it as a classic appropriately pitched to the violence and nihilism of the times, while the other reviled it as depraved. After a failed payroll robbery, the outlaw Bunch, led by aging Pike Bishop (William Holden) and including Dutch (Ernest Borgnine), Angel (Jaime Sanchez), and Lyle and Tector Gorch (Warren Oates and Ben Johnson), heads for Mexico pursued by the gang of Pike's friend-turned-nemesis Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan). Ultimately caught between the corruption of railroad fat cat Harrigan (Albert Dekker) and federale general Mapache (Emilio Fernandez), and without a frontier for escape, the Bunch opts for a final Pyrrhic victory, striding purposefully to confront Mapache and avenge their friend Angel. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

In this bloody Mexican horror outing, a beautiful woman suffers a terrible accident and becomes maimed and ugly. Nick Adams makes one of his last screen appearance in the Mexican Los Asesinos. Adams and Pedro Armendariz Jr. play a couple of bandits who would sooner kill each other than anyone else. Staking separate claims in a squalid little town, the two desperadoes vie for total control. Only one of the two is going to get out of this alive, and it may not be Adams, top billing or no top billing. Elsa Cardenas provides feminine interest to this cinematic macho excess. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this western, the trouble begins when a rancher's mother and father are killed by a young outlaw and his family who want his land. The son returns the favor and slaughters them. As the father lies dying, he manages to hire three gunslingers to track the boy down. The boy is a good shot though and kills two of the hired guns and then flees into Indian territory. There he meets an old miner, his wife and their daughter. The remaining gunslinger finds him, but is taken prisoner by the miner. Later, the saucy wife makes a pass at the young man, but he rejects her. In retaliation, she frees the gunman, steals her husband's gold and takes off. She ends up being killed by the Indians. Meanwhile, the daughter, the miner, and the rancher's son are busy fighting off an attack of their own. They then ride off after the fleeing gunman whose horse is so laden down with gold that it collapses. This allows the son to shoot him dead. Afterwards, the son and the miner's daughter get hitched and live happily ever after. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Boiling over with sexual shenanigans and general sleaziness the Mexico-set tale centers on a confused socialite who falls in love with an American engineer who was hired by her half- brother to oversee his mining outfit. At first the attraction between the girl and the Yank is purely sexual, but soon it turns to love. This causes the half-brother great torment, for he has fallen in love with his sister. Obsessed with jealousy, the conniving brother tries to bust things up by bringing in the girl's ex-lover. He is a cad and after trying unsuccessfully to seduce her, the creep results to rape. The next day, the despondent woman tries to kill herself, but the American shows up and reassures her that his love is true. A young Native American boy saves the day in this competent children's western by director George Sherman. Little twelve-year-old Michael (Danny Bravo) is an orphan whose best friends are young Father Phelan (Richard Basehart) and the curmudgeonly Father Walsh (Arthur Shields). The good fathers would like to raise money for a new shrine but the project seems hopeless -- until Michael steps into the picture. He devotes himself to the care and training of a white quarterhorse with his eye on the big, local race coming up soon. If the horse can win the race, it would be enough to cover the cost of the shrine. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Historically, one of the members of the infamous Dalton Brothers outlaw gang, Emmet Dalton, did escape with his life after that fateful 1892 shootout in Coffeyville, Kansas. He lived to a ripe old age, touring the country and lecturing on the evils of dishonesty. In the 1960 low-budgeter The Dalton That Got Away, Emmet is played by future Mannix star Michael Connors. As depicted herein, Emmet's post-bandit activities are heaps more exciting than we've been led to believe. The preponderance of Latino names in the cast and crew of The Dalton That Got Away lead us to conclude that the film was not lensed in Kansas. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Interest was increased in this Mexican political drama because the story criticizes the treasury department of that country, and said department would not allow the release of the film. After a change in government, this story written by Emilio Carballido, directed by Alfonso Corona-Blake and produced by Gloria Lozano, who also plays one of the leads, finally came to light on the silver screens. At the center of the action is a woman who works in the treasury department (Lozano) and the man she loves (Carlos Lopez-Moctezuma) who is also a co-worker and reciprocates her feelings. Both of them are having difficulties because of their jobs. Red tape and bureaucratic inefficiency put an extra burden on them, compounded by the fact that treasury employees often have a hard time getting paid their wages. The director has opted for a light touch, so this is not a strident propaganda piece and should prove of interest to a broad range of viewers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The Brave One is a bull named Gitano (or Gypsy). Mexican lad Michael Ray "adopts" Gitano after saving the animal's life during a storm. The friendship between bull and boy is threatened when Gitano's legal owners claim the animal and ship it off to the bullring. Moved by the boy's plight, the President of Mexico signs a "pardon" for Gitano-but not soon enough to prevent the bull's appearance at the Plaze de Mexico at Mexico City, where he faces top matador Fermin Rivera. The Brave One was helmed by Irving Rapper, a man best known for his Bette Davis vehicles at Warner Bros. Based on a true incident, the film earned a "best story" Academy Award for one Robert Rich-who, much to the embarrassment of the Academy (and the delight of civil libertarians) turned out to be blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Long available only in its "flat", black and white TV version, The Brave One was recently restored to its Technicolor and CinemaScope glory by the American Movie Classics cable service. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
