In this teenage horror film, a young man avoids the hand of death, only to find that he can't get away from it so easily. On the way to Paris with his high-school French club, Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has a vivid premonition of the plane crashing and killing all its passengers. After Alex and some other passengers demand to be let off the flight, his premonition turns out to be true, and the jet explodes during takeoff. While the FBI is convinced that Alex was involved in some kind of foul play, the passengers who got off the flight are all dying in horrible ways, as if whoever determined that the passengers would perish is punishing those who cheated death. A girl in desperate need of guidance looks for it in all the wrong places in this streetwise drama from Canada. Jude (Liane Balaban) is a bright but troubled teenager growing up in a dysfunctional home in Montreal. Jude became involved with a drug dealer and, in an ill-advised moment, decided to make off with his bankroll. Now she's looking for refuge on the streets, seeking advice from a motley collection of friends living along the city's margins: the huge but good hearted Big Al; Georgie, a hustler whose ambitions overwhelm his tiny body; Clarence (Raymond Cloutier), a kind man with a disturbing sexual attraction to children; and Gabriel, a fellow teenager battling a serious infection she got from a bad tattoo. Esmerelda is happy to share the potion with her newfound niece. Karmina then tries to adjust to life as a mortal. Her jilted lover shows up and his determined pursuit hinders her progress. Native Americans clash with the Canadian government as they struggle for independence in this factual Canadian drama set in Quebec during the summer of 1990. Eddie Laroche, a rebellious native leader spawned a national crises when he and his supporters declared the independence of Aki territory in a far-flung area of northern Quebec. He refused to negotiate without the presences of television cameras to record his people's plight. Jean Fontaine was the reporter assigned to the story and much of the film is told from his viewpoint. To reach Laroche's land, negotiators, government officials, and the film crew had to travel by boat. Fontaine is initially cynical and reluctant to do the story, but after he spends time on the boat interviewing it's passengers, his cynicism has dissolves and he realizes he is faced with the presentations of a terribly complex situation. In this unusual drama, a fiftyish man who has lost interest in life, women, and everything else, gets a new lease on life when Laura, who is 30 years younger than him, enters his life. At first this seems an unequivocal blessing, but it seems that she has chosen to hound and harangue him during their once-a-week meetings. Convinced that a recently burned-down structure harbors ghosts, young Matthew Mackay and Siluck Saysanasy decide to investigate the ruins. In true "urban legend" fashion, what Mackay sees inside the structure causes him to go bald on the spot! His distress is mollified when a pair of friendly ghosts whip up a "peanut butter solution" that will ostensibly restore his hair. The Canadian Dog Who Stopped the War is a children's film. More specifically, it is a children's Christmas film, and as such proved popular on the American cable-TV market. Even more specifically, it is an allegory, though not a heavy-handed one. Engaging in an after-school snowball fight, a group of kids learn a valuable lesson about the horrors of war-and, as indicated by the title, a little dog shall lead them.
