Ventura Pons Movies

Esteemed Spanish filmmaker Ventura Pons learned direction through his involvement in theater. As a stage director, he worked with material ranging from Shakespearean classics, to contemporary international plays, to local Catalan productions. With the exception of his debut film, a documentary about famed transvestite artist Ocaña, Ocaña, Retrato Intermitiente/Ocaña, an Intermittant Portrait, and his 1988 fictional feature Puta Misèria/Miserable Poverty!, all of Pons' films have been made with Catalan dialogue. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

In order to prepare for her role as a certain well-known actress, a young woman has lengthy conversations with three different actresses who were good friends with the famous star. Emerging from these conversations are three equally different versions of the past and the events that shaped their lives and careers. This cinematic adaptation of a theatrical work is true to the original, but does not stray far from a theatrical rendering of the story. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

One of the most renowned directors of Catalan cinema, Ventura Pons explores the themes of aging, relationships and loyalties in a strong psychological drama which uses the will written by an ailing man as a catalyst for the true emotions of others to surface. Jaume Clara (Joseph Maria Pou), a professor of medieval literature, is getting old. Sensing that his time is near, he thinks back on his life and reflects on what he can leave behind for those he loves. He writes his will in essay form, loosely based on Ramon Llull's Book of Friends and the Beloved, and stores it in his computer. The reactions he provokes from the people involved are quite different than what he expected. His best friend Pere (Mario Gas) is disturbed by the will and thinks it must be Jaume's fear of death that has prompted him to write such a thing. David (David Selvas), his brightest student, refuses to be Jaume's heir at the expense of his freedom. Meanwhile, Pere is having family problems involving his wife and his daughter. Five people have to face up to the idea of Jaume's death, a painful process that does not spare anyone's feelings. As war breaks among the five, it is hard to know who are the winners and the losers. Pons weaves an intricate web of tragic relations and conflicts in this film, which was screened as part of the Panorama section of the 49th International Berlin Film Festival, 1999. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

Scripter Sergi Belbel and director Ventura Pons based this film on Belbel's 1991 play, structured in a fashion similar to Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde (1900) and Richard Linklater's Slacker (1991): Two character set-ups feature one character from each scene turning up in the next scene, and so on, as a variety of people parade through diverse romantic and sexual situations. Cars careen about via an altered camera speed to provide the linkages between the 11 interlocking scenes. Shown at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

With a number of feature films under his belt, Catalan director Ventura Pons returns to the documentary format -- his first since his 1978 directorial debut, Ocana, an Intermittent Portrait -- with this tribute to the Argentinian-born Barcelona rhumba musician Javier Patricio "Gato" Perez entitled El Gran Gato (The Great Gato). A shooting star in Barcelona-based music, Perez was equal parts musical visionary and societal outsider, quickly rising to musical greatness before his life was cut short in 1990 at the age of 40. While touching on Perez's biographical information, Pons also features the music the multi-talented musician created, as interpreted by a number of current popular Spanish genre musicians including Ojos de Brujo, Benjamin Escoriza, Maria del Mar Bonet, and Luis Eduardo Aute. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

Adapted from David Leavitt's book The Page Turner, Food of Love tells the story of a cross-generational romance between two men. Paul (Kevin Bishop), a sexually repressed teenager, is an aspiring pianist who gets an opportunity to work as a page turner for Richard Kennington (Paul Rhys), a renowned pianist who also happens to be Paul's idol. A flirtation ensues between the two men after a concert one night, but further possibilities are thwarted by the meddling of Paul's neurotic mother Pamela (Juliet Stevenson). When Paul and Richard meet again six months later in Barcelona, they begin where they left off, tumbling headlong into a passionate affair despite the continued intrusion of Pamela, who believes that Richard is flirting with her. The affair is further complicated by the presence of Mansourian (Allan Corduner), Richard's manager and lover, who is suspicious of the relationship between Richard and Paul. Unable to deal with the situation, Richard flees to New York, and when he and his young lover finally meet again, Paul is a Julliard student engaged in an affair with yet another middle-aged man. The seeds of narrow-minded hatred that are planted in one family bear bitter fruit forty years later in this drama from director Ventura Pons. Josep (Manuel Barcelo) is arranging to take ownership of the home where his family lived when he was a child, and the experience causes him to look back on both the happy and painful experiences of his past. His mother Emma (Anna Lizaran) was often in poor health, but it didn't prevent her from ruling the family with an iron fist, as she looked after her stern husband Francesc (Joan Pera), free-spirited daughter Anna (Aida Oset) and young son Josep (Dafnis Balduz). Emma makes no secret of her prejudice against the Andalusians who are moving into the neighborhood, a situation aggravated by Anna's infatuation with a neighbor boy, Manuel (Roger Princep). Four decades later, Emma has passed on, but some things have changed remarkably little, as Francesc rails against the North African immigrants who have taken the place of the Andalusians in the community. Forasters (aka Outsiders) received its North American premiere at the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival; Anna Lizaran earned Best Actress honors at the 2009 Gaudi Awards, the Spanish film industry's equivalent to the Oscars. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Three couples deal with the sticky issue of infidelity in this comedy-drama from Spanish filmmaker Ventura Pons. Silvio (Jose Coronado) is a well-to-do business executive who is seemingly happily married to Marcia (Cecilia Rossetto). However, Silvio is convinced Marcia is cheating on him, and frequently spies on her -- ironically enough, he usually does so during assignations with his mistress, posh interior designer Claudia (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). Meanwhile, Daniel (Marc Cartes), who works with Claudia, is enjoying a vacation with his wife Irina (Cristina Plazas), a front desk clerk at the hotel where Silvio usually romps with Claudia. Daniel is hoping the getaway will help put the spark back into their marriage, but he soon discovers Irina's head has been turned by a trainer from a nearby health spa. And finally, Mariela (Patricia Arredondo), Silvio's housekeeper, has stated dating Jorge Washington (Gerardo Zamora), who has only recently come to Spain from Peru. While Mariela has fallen hard for Jorge, he's impressed by the romantic and material opportunities his new hometown provides.
