Elio Petri Movies
Italian filmmaker Elio Petri got his start working as a film critic for the communist newspaper L'Unita. Prior to that he had earned a degree in literature from Rome University. As a director, he started out making documentaries and co-penning scripts, primarily for De Santis. Petri made his feature-film directorial debut in 1961 with Assassin. He subsequently became known for making stylish, tightly woven sociopolitical satires that include The Tenth Victim (1965), his Academy Award-winning Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970), and Lulu the Tool, which was awarded the Grand Prize at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie GuideA junior executive (Giancarlo Giannini) is exasperated with his sexually repressed wife (Angela Molina) in this black comedy dripping with satire. The couple later ends up in bed with the man's mistress (Ombretta Colli) for a menage a trois. The man is pestered by his frantic friend Gualitiero (Paolo Bonacelli), who is convinced that someone is out to kill him. Ada (Aurore Clement) is the worried man's nymphomaniacal wife who is always on the outlook for some kinky sex. The theme is that human triviality and hang-ups hamper the quests of basic needs that can lead to a satisfying existence. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Set at an indeterminate time in the near future, this routine, well-acted drama by Elio Petri tackles favorite Italian topics: religion and politics. A bit of macabre fantasy is added to the mix, but the end product remains somewhat muddled. Don Gaetano (Marcello Mastroianni) is a priest who is supervising a group of Christian Democrats on a religious retreat. The objective is to help these politicians purify their past wrongdoings, no matter how large or small, and live closer to God. The retreat takes place in a concrete bunker with plenty of small rooms for contemplation and icons set here and there to offer inspiration. Once the retreat begins, the politicos alarmingly begin to die off one by one. Don Gaetano wants them to get closer to God but did he mean that close? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

- Gian Maria Volontè, Marcello Mastroianni, (more)
Italian Director Elio Petri, best known for his film Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion, here tells a complicated tale about a bank clerk who is literally allergic to money. Not only that, the clerk (Flavio Bucci) doesn't like the effect money has on people. For some reason, he steals things from a dishonest butcher (Ugo Tognazzi). This gives the butcher a convenient opportunity to file huge insurance claims for the thefts. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
If this Italian drama were any less well told, it would come off as a pure union propaganda piece. Instead, it is a worthy film for the director who made the acclaimed film Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion. In any manufacturing situation, it simply doesn't pay to be the fastest and hardest working person on the assembly line. In the first place, you probably can't keep up the pace you've set. In the second place, you make all your co-workers a) look bad and b) have to work harder; they will not thank you for this. Appearances to the contrary, it's a really stupid thing to do. However, Lulu Massa (Gian Maria Volonte) doesn't understand this simple principle, and he enjoys the pay bonuses he gets from management -- until he has to leave work to recuperate from an accident in which he lost a finger. During that time, he visits a colleague who shows him not only the error of his own ways, but the horror of his whole working situation. When he goes back to work, Massa tries to organize a union. At first, he is just as unpopular with his co-workers as before, but he is persistent. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
Better known as Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, this Oscar-winning political drama stars Gian Maria Volonte as the citizen of the title, an unnamed police inspector. The story finds the inspector calmly cutting his mistress' throat, then planting evidence that will clear him of accusation -- and attempting to evade arrest by virtue of his "clean" public image. Elio Petri's own anti-establishment stance was never more pronounced than in this film, where the truth is whatever the ruling class chooses to acknowledge. The original Italian title of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion was Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogna Sospetto. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Leonardo (Franco Nero) is a painter who retreats to a house in the country to regain his lost inspiration. He is plagued by the presence of an erotic apparition. The gorgeous ghost soon moves the painter to the point he wishes to carry on a relationship with her. Leonardo is several bristles shy of a brush as he sinks deeper into insanity. When his fiancé arrives for a visit, she is murdered and chopped into little pieces by the troubled artist. Vanessa Redgrave and Gabriella Grimaldi also star in this story of madness and horror. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

He discovers that the victims were the recipients of threatening, anonymous letters. Paolo falls for Louisa Irene Papas, the widow of one of the dead men. He finds out too late that she may have been an accomplice to the murder when he learns she may be having an affair with a local man of importance. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Fifteen "monsters of modern Rome" are presented in this Italian episodic drama. Each of these "monsters" is highly misanthropic and nasty. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Based on an interesting plot from a novel by Robert Sheckley, this movie features tongue-in-cheek performances by Andress and Mastroianni, which are responsible for its status as a minor cult favorite. Set in the 21st century, this science fiction movie depicts a society in which population control is facilitated by the use of legalized murder. The society plays an assassination game for fun, in which the last person left alive is the winner. The movie is made for entertainment, but there are some sexual situations. ~ All Movie Guide

In this comedy anthology, the sex-capades of several Italian couples are chronicled. In "The Scandal," a dull and insensitive husband is unaware that his lonely wife has been flirting with a young buck at a vacation resort. When the husband finally finds out, he gets jealous and the marriage is renewed. In "Sin in the Afternoon," a movie producer is frustrated because his wife refuses to touch him, and so he winds up picking up a comely woman off the street and taking her to a motel. "The Victim" chronicles the relationship between an insanely jealousy woman and her beleaguered husband, whom she drives away. She, seeking revenge, begins an affair with his best friend. In the final episode, "Modern People," a deeply indebted cheese maker is given the option of paying the debt in cash or allowing the debtor an evening of lovemaking with his gorgeous wife. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

- Nino Manfredi, Fulvia Franco, (more)
Mombelli (Alberto Sordi) is an elementary school teacher whose wife Ada (Claire Bloom) dreams of becoming wealthy. She talks him into quitting his job and investing all of their money in a shoe factory. The family and the business fall apart when Ada is killed in a car wreck, and the colorless Mombelli has no choice but to return to his dull world of academia. Vito de Taranto plays the schoolmaster in a role that is a cardboard caricature. Although Sordi injects some satire and comedy into his role, his performance isn't enough to overcome this meandering feature that often gets bogged down. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Excellently directed by Elio Petri, this psychological and social drama illustrates the contrast between an older man's humanity and the reality of the world around him. When Cesare (Salvo Randone) sees a man die of a heart attack while on a streetcar, he is shocked into changing his own lifestyle before it is too late. So he quits his job and careers around the city, visiting museums, cultural centers, and old friendships or passions that passed him by earlier when he was too busy to notice. But as he runs into a former friend who seems to be corrupted, an old flame which has long since fizzled, and other people with obvious clay feet his attitude toward what he has missed begins to change. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this amusing look at the petty deceits of everyday life, Marcello Mastroianni shines as wealthy antique dealer Nello Poletti, a man with every comfort money can buy. One day, however, Poletti is falsely accused of murdering his former mistress (Micheline Presle), who set him up in a life of luxury only to be cast aside in favor of a younger woman (Cristina Gajoni). The evidence seems overwhelming, and Poletti is sent to jail, where he reflects on his shameful life of deceit in pursuit of wealth. Overcome by guilt, Poletti decides to confess, only to discover that the real killer -- a spurned lover -- has already been apprehended. Once he is off the hook, Poletti returns to his original pattern of fast cars and fast women, even jokingly referring to himself as "The Assassin," and proving that he has learned absolutely nothing from his ordeal. The story is fairly predictable, but is never less than entertaining, thanks to a clever screenplay by director Elio Petri, Tonino Guerra, Pasquale Festa Campanile, and Massimo Franciosa. Petri (making his directorial debut) gets the most out of his talented cast, particularly Mastroianni, and there are some nice supporting turns by veteran character actors Salvo Randone, Andrea Checchi, and Enrico Maria Salerno. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

This drama, loosely based on the legend of the "Hunchback," is set in Rome, 1944. The story begins as the Hunchback, a leader of the Resistance rapes a Nazi collaborator's daughter. He is soon captured and tortured by the Fascists. Meanwhile, the hapless girl miscarries her child and becomes a prostitute. Uomini e Lupi was released outside of Italy as Men and Wolves. Pedro Armendariz and Yves Montand star as a pair of courageous wolf-hunters in the Abruzzi region of Italy. When Montand returns to his village with a dog instead of a wolf, he is branded a coward. He redeems himself by teaming with Armendariz' wife Sylvia Magnano to kill the wolf who claims the life of her husband. It's a simple story, imbued with powerful visual dynamics by Giuseppe De Santis. Especially impressive is the climax, staged during a blinding snowstorm (it's the real thing, too!) ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Silvana Mangano, Yves Montand, (more)
