Colleen Camp Movies
By any stretch of the imagination,
Colleen Camp has enjoyed a diverse film career since her big-screen debut in one of the
Planet of the Apes sequels in 1973. She has worked as an actress, dancer, singer, and producer; she was directed by
Francis Ford Coppola,
Nicolas Roeg,
Jack Hill, and
Hal Needham; and she was often cast as either a sex symbol or stuffy prude. Born in San Francisco on June 7, 1953,
Camp precociously began her acting career in regional theater at the age of three, although her first big break didn't come until more than a decade later, when she was cast as one of the dancing Gold Diggers on
The Dean Martin Show. In 1973, the actress landed her first film role with a bit part as a human slave in
Battle for the Planet of the Apes; larger roles in
The Swinging Cheerleaders and
The Last Porno Flick followed, but, in 1975
Camp had the chance to show off her considerable comic talent in
Michael Ritchie's satiric comedy
Smile. Despite her strong performance, however, her career still failed to catch fire; while she found steady work, she tended to land larger roles in undistinguished films such as
The Gumball Rally or
Ebony, Ivory and Jade, and smaller parts in more ambitious pictures, such as
Apocalypse Now and
They All Laughed. (
Camp also sang "One Day Since Yesterday" in the latter, a song which briefly grazed the Billboard singles charts.) In time,
Camp began to develop something of a cult following, and, while she was still a long way from film stardom, she worked often and landed supporting roles in such hits as
Wayne's World,
Sliver,
Die Hard With a Vengeance, and
Election. Married to Paramount executive John Goldwyn, she began working more behind the camera in the '80s, serving as a producer of
The City Girl in 1984, and was a part of the production team of a number of other films, including
Teenage Caveman,
Earth vs. The Spider, and
The Day The World Ended. ~ Rovi

This Hallmark Channel TV movie is one of several starring Kellie Martin as Samantha "Sam" Kinsey, the owner of a British-style American bookshop which traffics in mystery novels. To improve business, Sam hosts a book signing with three celebrity "whodunit" authors in attendance. One of the three, Claire Beckman (Beth Broderick), uses the occasion to announce her retirement -- whereupon she is nearly shot to death by a cleverly rigged hidden pistol. A second attempt on Claire's life, using poison, succeeds, whereupon local police chief Connors (Casey Sander) places everyone under suspicion -- including Sam. Thus, our heroine is forced once again to play amateur sleuth, with the able assistance of her friends and colleagues, especially enigmatic former CIA agent Philby (Clarence Williams III). Mystery Woman: Mystery Weekend debuted January 7, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins attracted music-industry attention with her debut album Tongues and Tails (1992). Observing Hawkins rehearsal for a 1996 30-city tour, filmmaker Gigi Gaston proposed this potent documentary which includes over 20 Hawkins songs, along with the revelatory recollection of painful memories by the singer. Gaston (in her directorial debut) followed Hawkins back to her New York roots, where she left home at age 14 to live with a Nigerian drummer/artist while studying at Manhattan's School of Music. Seven hours of footage was shot of Hawkins talking with her mother, who discussed Sophie's anorexia, her fear of sex, her unhappy relationships, and the revelation of her sex abuse at age 10. Finding herself entangled in Gaston's "web of documentary," Hawkins says it led her to overcome her guilt and fear ( re: "a side of me I never wanted to know existed"), but legal threats by the abuser nearly put the footage on the shelf until sound effects were inserted to obliterate the abuser's name. The mother states her "great sadness about Sophie is not being able to have an emotional intimacy or connection with her." This 90-minute film, which impacted on the life of its subject, had its world premiere at the 1998 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Julia Cole (Diane Salinger) is more than a little upset about turning 40. She's depressed about growing older, distressed at the lack of attention from her workaholic husband Charles (John Calvin), and bored with being a stay-at-home wife and mother. On her birthday, she finds a bottle of enchanted soap bubbles. Blowing them transports her to moments of happiness from earlier times in her life. Soon, she not only regains her youthful vigor, she cannot even remember how old she is. She changes her appearance, her personality is transformed from reclusive to outgoing, and her values change from strict to permissive. Eventually, she realizes that happiness is not age-dependent. Susan Clark, the queen of the made-for-TV biopic (in 1976, at least), stars as legendary aviator Amelia Earhart. The story begins in 1921, with Amelia's first biplane flight. In 1928, she becomes the first woman ever to fly the Atlantic, albeit not at the controls. She gains international fame with a daring cross-country flight. The film refuses to speculate on the cause of Ms. Earhart's disappearance during a round-the-world trip in 1937, though the clues that do exist are presented in full. Co-starring with Susan Clark are John Forsythe as Amelia's publisher husband (and "exploiter") George Putnam, and Stephen Macht as her purported lover, stunt pilot Paul Mantz. Nearly two decades after Amelia Earhart was first telecast on October 25, 1976, Diane Keaton portrayed Earhart in a made-for-cable biography. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The true story of one woman's brief and ultimately tragic flirtation with fame in the 1960s provides the basis for this biographical drama. In 1943, Edie Sedgwick (Sienna Miller) was born to a wealthy and socially prominent family, and she grew up with beauty and money, but also a history of mental illness; she was hospitalized with an eating disorder in her late teens, and by the time she was 21, two of her seven siblings had died before their time. In 1964, Edie moved to New York City, and quickly made a splash on the Manhattan social scene; she became friendly with the famous pop artist Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce), who was fascinated by her gamine loveliness and her quirky personality. Warhol wasted no time in casting her in one of his underground movies, and she quickly became a crucial part of his retinue of "superstars." Fashion icon Diana Vreeland (Illeana Douglas) was convinced Edie had the looks and charm to also become a successful model, and soon she was gracing the pages of Life, Vogue, and Glamour. But Edie's instability was hardly helped by her new fast-lane lifestyle, and when she met Billy Quinn (Hayden Christensen), a folk rock singer-songwriter often cited as "the voice of a generation," he persuaded her that Warhol and his associates were simply using her fame and beauty for their own gain, and she found herself torn between two powerful mentors, one of whom had become her lover as well. Factory Girl also co-stars Jimmy Fallon, Mena Suvari, and Tara Summers as regulars at the Warhol "Factory." The character of Musician was inspired in part by Bob Dylan, who was romantically involved with Edie Sedgwick for a brief time. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Directed by Sven Pape, L.A. Twister follows a familiar plight -- Lenny McCoy (played by Zack Ward, who some will remember as Ralphie's red-headed nemesis in A Christmas Story) is trying to make a spot for himself in Hollywood, though it seems more likely that Hollywood will make a meal out of Lenny. Far from having hit it big, Lenny decides to split the rent with Ethan (Tony Daly), an old friend whose marital problems and artistic endeavors have left him in a similar position. Rather than continuing their futile attempts to woo the industry, Ethan and Lenny decide it would be more lucrative to make their own film; however, once they get the ball rolling, making their own film seems just as hard as participating in someone else's, and both friends are forced to examine their friendship and personal ethics system in the process. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi
