Heavy metal pioneer Ozzy Osbourne first gained exposure as co-founder and vocalist of the groundbreaking hard rock band Black Sabbath, which formed in 1969 in Osbourne's hometown of Birmingham, England. After nearly a decade of helping to define the parameters of the heavy metal genre, Osbourne embarked upon a solo career that brought him even more success and infamy. He became a symbol for hard rock excess and outrageousness, thanks to his music's quasi-Satanic imagery, his very public substance abuse, and an assortment of bizarre stunts (such as biting the head off of a dove in front of a roomful of record executives and an arrest for urinating against the Alamo). Osbourne's few silver screen appearances have been cameos in youth-oriented films that play off his image as the ultimate rock & roll heathen, though his interview segment in the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization 2: The Metal Years was one of the few down-to-earth, honest moments in a revealing, and often damning, portrayal of the metal scene's fans and performers. However, it was with the 2002 premiere of the MTV reality series The Osbournes that Ozzy entered the strangest chapter of his career in the public eye. Millions tuned in weekly to peer into the day-to-day life of the Osbourne clan, as captured by a camera crew set up in the family mansion. Ozzy was revealed to be a sweet (if addled) husband and father who loved his wife and children despite the unending chaos and profanity that distinguished their home. The popularity of the series made Osbourne (and the rest of his brood) more famous than ever with many viewers who had never even heard his music. The youngest child of the family often has the most problems -- so why should things be different for the Prince of Darkness and his offspring? Satan (Harvey Keitel) is considering retirement, and is pondering which of his sons should take over the family business -- ambitious Adrian (Rhys Ifans), strapping Cassius (Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr.), or Nicky (Adam Sandler), an accident-prone demon who prefers to stay in his room playing his favorite heavy metal tunes. When Satan decides to stay on for another 10,000 years, Adrian is outraged, and leaves Hell to go to New York, where he and Cassius attempt to round up enough souls to vote Satan out of power. Satan, understandably upset, sends Nicky to bring Adrian and Cassius back home, but Nicky finds life on Earth is more complicated than he expected. Things don't get any easier when he develops a crush on Valerie (Patricia Arquette), a good-hearted mortal woman. Little Nicky also features Michael McKean as a city official trying to put Nicky behind bars, Kevin Nealon as Hell's gatekeeper, Rodney Dangerfield as Satan's father, Robert Smigel as the voice of Beefy -- a talking dog who is Nicky's guide on earth, Allen Covert as Todd -- Nicky's new roommate, and Peter Dante and Jonathan Loughran as a pair of metalheads who dig Satan. Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Simmons, and Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Steven Tyler are among the Heavy Metal artists interviewed in The Decline of Western Civilization 2: The Metal Years. This follow-up to filmmaker Penelope Spheeris' classic 1981 "punk" documentary The Decline of Western Civilization is a bit more reflective and word-dominated than its predecessor, but no less entertaining. One striking aspect of the film is its before-and-after comparisons of the impact of MTV. Heavy Metal newcomers tend to overpraise the cable service, while the "oldsters" implicitly decry the mainstreaming-and in some cases, homogenizing--of their best work. Interestingly, Spheeris' own style has become more mainstream in the years since Decline of Western Civilization, thanks to experience gleaned on such dramatic films as Hollywood Vice Squad (1986) and Dudes (1987). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Two guys from Queens wind up in trouble with the mob because of their fondness for prank phone calls in this quickie comedy. Stars Johnny Brennan and Kamal Ahmed first found fame as "The Jerky Boys" thanks to a series of comedy albums featuring real prank calls in which the duo assumed a variety of abrasive and often extremely foul-mouthed characters. Playing characters based on themselves, they reprise many of these same routines in this debut film, linking the comic bits together through a loose plot concerning local organized crime. It seems the boys have used their phone skills to trick a local mobster (Alan Arkin) into thinking that they are notorious Chicago hoods, only to have to go on the run when their scheme is discovered.
