Heavy metal pioneer Ozzy Osbourne first gained exposure as co-founder and vocalist of the groundbreaking hard rock band Black Sabbath, which formed in 1969 in Osbourne's hometown of Birmingham, England. After nearly a decade of helping to define the parameters of the heavy metal genre, Osbourne embarked upon a solo career that brought him even more success and infamy. He became a symbol for hard rock excess and outrageousness, thanks to his music's quasi-Satanic imagery, his very public substance abuse, and an assortment of bizarre stunts (such as biting the head off of a dove in front of a roomful of record executives and an arrest for urinating against the Alamo). Osbourne's few silver screen appearances have been cameos in youth-oriented films that play off his image as the ultimate rock & roll heathen, though his interview segment in the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization 2: The Metal Years was one of the few down-to-earth, honest moments in a revealing, and often damning, portrayal of the metal scene's fans and performers. However, it was with the 2002 premiere of the MTV reality series The Osbournes that Ozzy entered the strangest chapter of his career in the public eye. Millions tuned in weekly to peer into the day-to-day life of the Osbourne clan, as captured by a camera crew set up in the family mansion. Ozzy was revealed to be a sweet (if addled) husband and father who loved his wife and children despite the unending chaos and profanity that distinguished their home. The popularity of the series made Osbourne (and the rest of his brood) more famous than ever with many viewers who had never even heard his music. While Sharon and Ozzy prepare to renew their wedding vows on New Year's Eve, flower girl Kelly questions the authenticity of the ceremony's Jewish slant and Jack seems preoccupied with his new girlfriend despite nearly unanimous disapproval from the rest of the family. In preparation, the groom-to-be receives a waxing to remove any unsightly hair. As the ceremony gets under way, Sharon expresses hopes that, unlike their first wedding, Ozzy will stay sober enough to cement the vows later that evening. The lavish ceremony reaches a sentimental climax when Sharon recites her personally written and extremely heartfelt vows and Ozzy is deeply touched. When it's revealed that Jack's new female friend shared a bed with the young Osbourne and condoms were found in the vicinity, Sharon pleads with him to settle on a single girlfriend despite his fear of commitment. Meanwhile, the family helps to get Rob settled in. A friend of Kellys who recently lost his mother, the Osbournes have agreed to let Rob live in their home for the time being. Jack offers Rob a warm welcome in the form of a cooking lesson; it seems as if beans on toast is a household tradition, and until you've learned the family recipe, you're not officially an Osbourne. Fans of The Osbournes were well aware of some significant changes since the end of the first season, and the anticipation leading into season two of the hit MTV series was nearly searing hot by its debut in November 2002. It was no secret that having their lives displayed for the masses had taken its toll on the exhausted family, and for a while it looked as if the series might have run its course. With the July 2002 announcement that Sharon had been diagnosed with colon cancer, all signs pointed to the family foregoing their reality sitcom existence for a more private and personal period. This coupled with a visibly shaken Ozzy announcing that no one would be interested in seeing the family through such dark times made it appear as if the decision had been all but made to pull the plug on The Osbournes.
