This Republic potboiler is no relation to the like-vintage Swedish film of the same title. The wayward girl in question is Judy Wingate (Marcia Henderson), the stepdaughter of predatory alcoholic Frances Wingate (Katherine Barrett). Judy is thrown into prison for a murder actually committed by Frances. The motivation: both women were in love with the same man. Frances keeps mum about her crime until it's almost too late for the people whom the audience truly care about. Some of the best scenes involve B-picture "regular" Whit Bissell as a lovelorn middle-ager. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Marcia Henderson, Peter Walker, (more)
As indicated by the title, Taming Sutton's Gal is a backwoods melodrama with comic undertones. John Lupton plays citified bank clerk Frank McClary, who heads to hillbilly country to do some hunting. He rents a room from Aunty Sutton (Verna Felton), whose niece Lou (Gloria Talbott) takes a liking to Frank. Unfortunately, so does the nymphomaniacal Evelyn Phelps (May Wynn), the wife of dangerously jealous moonshiner Jugger Phelps (Jack Kelly). Things get really hairy when Jugger is shot and wounded: he thinks that Frank is responsible, but the truth is closer to home. The inevitable climactic showdown is consummately directed by Lesley Selander, a past master at making silk purses out of sow's ears. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- John Lupton, Gloria Talbott, (more)

Jet Cosgrave (John Derek) is The Outcast in this big-budget Republic western. Thanks to the chicanery of his crooked uncle Major Cosgrave (Jim Davis), Jet has been cheated out of his father's property and branded a pariah. He spends the rest of the film trying to regain his birthright and clear his name. The two women in Jet's life are Judy Polsen (Joan Evans), who chases him for so long that he finally catches her, and Alice Austin (Catherine McLeod), Major Cosgrave's fianee. The supporting cast is dotted with such weatherbeaten western "regulars" as Slim Pickens, Bob Steele and Harry Carey Jr. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- John Derek, Joan Evans, (more)
The much-maligned Vera Ralston turns in an acceptable performance as star of Republic's A Perilous Journey. Though seemingly inspired by MGM's Westward the Women, the film was actually based on The Golden Tide, a novel by Vingie Roe. In the year 1850, a group of 49 young women charter a full-rigger to sail for California to offer themselves as wives to the gold prospectors. As indicated by the title, the journey is indeed fraught with peril (not to mention a few geographical inaccuracies). Vera Ralston plays Francie Landreaux, who has undertaken the voyage in search of her no-good gambler husband. Instead, she finds romance in the arms of rough-and-ready Shard Benton (Scott Brady). A Perilous Journey is pepped up by several song numbers, written by Victor Young and Edward Heyman. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Vera Ralston, David Brian, (more)

Western star William Elliot always insisted that his idol was silent-film cowboy William S. Hart. Elliot's Hellfire, then, can be seen as his tribute to the 1916 Bill Hart classic Hell's Hinges. Elliot plays a hard-bitten frontier gambler whose life is saved by a preacher. When the preacher dies as a result, Elliot vows to mend his ways. He becomes a minister himself, planning to finish constructing a church that his predecessor had started. To finance this project, he hopes to collect the reward on female outlaw Marie Windsor. She resists all attempts to bring her to justice, but after a climactic shoot-out with the rest of the criminal element in town, the wounded Windsor repents her sins and agrees to turn herself in. Hellfire was written by Dorrell and Stuart E. McGowan, who later collaborated on the long-running TV anthology Death Valley Days. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The all-purpose title Blackmail was again revived for this breezy Republic comedy-mystery. William Marshall (not the African American star of Blacula) plays private eye Dan Turner, assigned to shield playboy Ziggy Cranston (Ricardo Cortez) from a pair of clever blackmailers (Adele Mara, Richard Fraser). As a result of Turner's interference, the extortionists up the ante from $50,000 to three times that amount. A few murders and plot twists later, Turner emerges triumphant; still, one wonders if Cranston wouldn't have been better off handling his persecutors by himself. Originally 67 minutes, Blackmail was trimmed to 54 minutes for its earliest TV showings. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- William Marshall, Adele Mara, (more)
Though already established as Roy Rogers' favorite leading lady (offscreen and on), Dale Evans was permitted a rare non-western appearance minus Rogers in the 1947 Republic mystery thriller The Trespasser. Evans is cast as nightclub singer Linda Coleman, the sister of newspaper-book reviewer Bruce Coleman (William Bakewell). Bruce is engaged in a clever fraud, peddling rare-book forgeries to collector/publisher Channing Bliss (Francis Pierlot). This bunco scheme is uncovered by aspiring girl reporter Stevie Carson (Janet Martin), with the grudging help of veteran newshound Danny Butler (Warren Douglas). With all this going on, ostensible star Dale Evans has little to do except sing one sultry musical number and look smashing in low-cut gowns -- and, oh yes, indulge in a bit of romance with Stevie's editor Bill Monroe (Douglas Fowley). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Betty Alexander, William Bakewell, (more)
Not precisely the best film of 1947, the Republic comedy-mystery Exposed is nevertheless consistently enjoyable. Adele Mara is a delight as wisecracking female private eye Belinda Prentice, who has to put in a lot of overtime when her first client is murdered. Following the clues to an apartment house chock-full of suspicious characters, Belinda predicts-correctly, as it turns out--that there'll be several more killings unless she can pinpoint the guilty party and ascertain his or her motives. Meanwhile, her police-inspector father (Robert Armstrong) wishes aloud that Belinda would give up the p.i. business and settle down with a nice young fellow. Some choice moments are provided by Joyce Compton as Belinda's garrulous secretary, William Haade as her cloddish assistant, and Bob Steele as a neurotic gunman. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Adele Mara, Robert Scott, (more)

Magnificent Rogue is the title of a less than magnificent Republic programmer. Warren Douglas plays the title role, a wheeler-dealer businessman with fingers in several dirty pies. When Douglas is drafted, his wife Lynne Roberts is compelled to take over his business. Completely unaware of his shady corporate practices, Roberts suddenly finds herself commiserating with raffish characters straight out of Damon Runyon. How she comes out on top and reforms her husband forms the denouement of this lightweight comedy/drama. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Invisible Informer serves as a feature-length vehicle for Republic serial queen Linda Stirling. The story is set in motion by a missing necklace, worth $100,000. The insurance agency covering the necklace suspects that the "theft" is a fraud, and dispatches special operatives Eve Murray (Stirling) and Mike Reagan (William Henry) to get to the truth. In the course of their investigation, Eve and Mike must contend with several murders, perpetrated by the thief with the help of a nasty police dog. Usually seen battling burly bad guys or escaping deadly perils in her other films, Linda Stirling is afforded a few steamy love scenes in this one, which she pulls off with elan. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Donia Bussey, Tristram Coffin, (more)
