This undistinguished comedy is about twin sisters separated at birth, one grows up in poverty in a rural village, and the other goes on to fame and fortune as a sophisticated singer and dancer. Juana (Maria Elena Velasco, also the director and writer) is taken by her father after she was born to be raised in a remote Mexican village, while Chana (also Velasco) grows up in Mexico City where she gets to meet the celebrated Spanish singer Pilar del Rio (Carmen Montejo) because her mother works for Pilar. After the mother dies, Chana is adopted by the singer and moves to Spain, where she also learns to sing and dance. When Pilar decides to go on a tour that includes Mexico, Chana and her long-separated twin finally have a chance to meet again. But there is no guarantee that everything will go smoothly, since the gap between them is so vast, and on top of that, Chana's irate ex-husband is unaware that she has a look-alike twin -- and he kidnaps the wrong woman. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Whatever happened to Satanik? Back in the 1970s, this Spanish-Italian horror harvest seemed to be on TV every other week. In case you need reminding, the plot concerns a youth potion that transforms an old crone into a ravishing beauty. Unfortunately, her new-found gorgeousness forces the heroine to form a pact with the Devil. Magda Konopka stars in this mish-mash of cliches and gruesome special effects. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Duel at the Rio Grande was initially titled The Sign of Zorro, but apparently the copyright police were on the job that day. Sean Flynn, son of Errol, stars in the Italian/French/Spanish coproduction as Zorro, fop by day, masked-and-caped righter of wrongs by night. Danielle De Metz costars as the lovely Spanish-California senorita whose virtue is forever in jeopardy. The younger Flynn continued pursuing an acting career into the mid-1960s, then became a freelance photojournalist. While covering the war in Vietnam, Flynn vanished without a trace in 1970, presumably captured or killed by the Vietcong. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Lucio Fulci's directorial debut was another showcase for famed Italian comedian Toto, but opened to rather lackluster performance at the box office. A Mafia chieftain (Armando Calvo) is deported back to Italy and smuggles his money out of America in hundreds of jars of jam, a plot uncovered by a dockworker who sets off a frenzied search for the money. Twenty years and scores of films later, Fulci finally attracted cult stardom with Zombie, setting off a three-year period that also produced the director's best-known works, The Beyond, City of the Living Dead, and House by the Cemetery. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Sarita (aka Sara) Montiel stars in this Spanish musical, which was directed by Juan De Orduna, the man who 10 years earlier first recognized the star potential of the multitalented Montiel. Set in the late 19th century, the story concerns a famous music-hall singer who achieves fame with the help of a handsome impresario (Aramndo Calvo). At the height of her success, our heroine falls for a much-younger bullfighter (Enrique Vera). Bankrolling his career, she is ruined when he dies in the ring. A happy ending is set in motion by the impresario, who has quietly loved the singer all along. El Ultimo Cuple was released in English-speaking countries as The Last Torch Song. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Previously filmed in Germany in 1939, Guy de Maupassant's "history of a scoundrel" Bel Ami was good for another go-round in this Mexican adaptation. Armando Calvo plays the eponymous "hero," a duplicitous journalist who advances himself in society by seducing and abandoning women of wealth, all the while denying himself true love. This essentially Gallic tale is given a Latin flavor by director Antonio Momplet. Calvo's quartet of leading ladies -- Gloria Marin, Patricia Moran, Emilia Guau and Andrea Palma -- are gorgeous, deserving far better treatment than afforded them by the ruthless Bel Ami. In an incredible "coincidence," Bel Ami was distributed in the U.S. just before the release of United Artists' The Private Affairs of Bel Ami. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Mexican director Víctor Urruchúa's 1947 drama Ángel O Demonio follows the melodramatic vicissitudes that create tumult in the relationship of two lovers, Gabriel and Blanca, as they endure several reunions and breakups. The story commences in 1930 Mexico City, when Gabriel, an aspiring writer with precious little output, arrives in the city and runs headfirst into serendipity. A luggage mixup propels him into an encounter with the alluring Blanca, with whom he falls instantly in love. The relationship provides the incentive for Gabriel to author his premier novel, Woman of Destiny, but when Blanca leaves Gabriel, the well of inspiration runs dry. In time, Gabriel spots yet another alluring woman - this one a masked dancer in a nearby club. Lo and behold, it turns out to be Bianca; Gabriel is enraged with her over her prior romantic betrayal, but manages to forgive, and - in time, marries her and fathers her children. Little does he realize, however, that she's been seeing someone else on the sly the entire time. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
