Fred Niblo, Jr. Movies

The son of film director Fred Niblo and vaudeville entertainer Josephine Cohan (George's sister), Fred Niblo Jr. launched his own career as a screenwriter in 1931. Among Niblo's earliest screen credits was Howard Hawks' The Criminal Code, which earned him an Oscar nomination. After several years on the Columbia Pictures writing staff, he moved to Warner Bros., where he worked on films both big-budgeted (Fighting 69th) and B-grade (Nine Lives Are Not Enough). Active until at least 1950, Fred Niblo Jr. spent the last decade of his career at RKO and 20th Century Fox. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

While Rita Hayworth was one of many starlets signed to one-year contracts at Columbia in 1936-37, she was one of the few who made the "cut" when option time rolled around. One of those who didn't was Patricia Farr, who starred in All-American Sweetheart before the Columbia execs showed her the door. Farr's top billing is perplexing, since the film's main characters are all male, all members of a college rowing team (an athletic endeavor utilized in no fewer than four 1930s films). The storyline of All-American Sweetheart involved the compromising of certain student rowers, courtesy of bribe-dispensing gangsters. Movie trends always come in cycles: in 1937, motorboat melodramas were briefly the rage. In Columbia's Motor Madness, small-time boat manufacturer Cap McNeil (J. M. Kerrigan) enters an international cup race to raise enough money to keep his business afloat. Much to the delight of Cap's pretty daughter Peggy (Rosalind Keith), handsome mechanic Joe Dunn (Allan Brooks) is chosen to steer McNeil's motorboat to (hopefully) victory. Complicating matters is a cute orphan lad (George Ernest) whom Joe adopts and a gambling boat which serves as a safe haven for wanted criminals. Otto Kruger once again plays a dynamic, bombastic attorney in Columbia's Counsel for Crime. Kruger plays William Mellon, a shifty shyster whose underhanded methods loses him the love of his sweetheart Anne (Nana Bryant), who subsequently marries a powerful senator (Thurston Hall). What Mellon doesn't know is that Anne has borne him a son, whom the senator has adopted. Reaching adulthood, Paul (Douglass Montgomery) opts for a legal career himself, taking a clerical job with his own father's firm. In this interesting drama, a disfigured fugitive killer gets a second chance at life when he hides out in a hospital and overhears a doctor discussing his innovative scientific theories. The murderer accosts the doctor and forces him to perform a radical surgery that will change the criminal's face and brain and make him into a better person. Using a new name, the crook becomes a top doctor. Unfortunately, he could change his face, but he could not flee his past and he finds himself standing trial and getting convicted. Gangster boss Beau Gardner (Douglass Dumbrille) isn't happy about the things being said about him on the radio station owned by J. J. Held (Berton Churchill). Using his influence, Gardner is able to shut down Held's operation, but he can't wipe out an entire radio network. Thus, he uses hot-shot broadcast engineer Neil Bennett (Lloyd Nolan) as an innocent dupe in a scheme to jam all radio transmissions within shouting distance. Bennett finally manages to enlist the aid of the U.S. Navy to strike a blow for freedom of the airwaves. And how does Ann Sothern fit into all this? Simple: she plays Bennett's sweetheart Fay Stevens, who happens to be a singer at Garner's nightclub. Two of Hollywood's duller actors, Conrad Nagel and Florence Rice, star in this overly complicated melodrama from Columbia Pictures. The latter plays Evelyn Vail, a nurse convicted of poisoning a patient. Out on parole, Evelyn decides to fly to Sing-Sing and confront death row inmate Carl Peters, the man who accused her of the deed in the first place. On board the airliner, Evelyn makes the acquaintance of John Robinson Gordon (Nagel), who is transporting a revolutionary munitions formula to Washington, D.C. Another passenger, Baker (Robert Allen), complains of having been poisoned and leaves the plane during a stopover in Dallas. Back in the air, Gordon's bodyguard, Lieutenant O'Brien (Fred Kelsey), suffers the same fate, but this time the poison proves fatal. The plane returns to Dallas, where Police Captain Barrie (William B. Davidson) accused poor Evelyn of the crime. Happily, Gordon can prove otherwise and the real culprit is unmasked. Young attorney Larry Condon (Richard Cromwell) falls for Helen, but keeps his distance because he thinks she's in allegiance with a gang of bond thieves. When Larry and Helen fall into the clutches of the villains, salvation comes from an unexpected source: fish peddler Joe Scalise (Henry Armetta), who up to this point has been the film's comedy relief. Douglass Dumbrille is so obviously the villain of the piece that one wonders why he isn't wearing a handlebar mustache and top hat. Unknown Woman was written by W. Victor Jory and Norman Foster play two desperate Devil's Island inmates, bitter enemies who pool their resources and work out an escape plan. They bribe those who can be bribed, befriend those willing to be befriended, and strong arm potential "stoolies" into silence. At last, Jory and Foster make good their breakout, but their mutual hatred bubbles to the surface and ruins their clean getaway. Feeling humiliated, Geraldine plots a diabolical revenge by vamping Dan, intending to drop him like a hot potato the minute he falls in love with her. Instead, Dan ends up saving Geraldine's hide by capturing a gang of crooks who've been using her father's yacht to smuggle aliens. In his first major film role, Benny Baker scores a comic bull's-eye as photojournalist Snapper Dugan. Previously filmed in 1928, Columbia's Name the Woman is set in motion when an overenthusiastic cub reporter (Richard Cromwell) implicates an innocent woman (Arline Judge) in a well-publicized murder case. Realizing his mistake, the reporter teams up with poor woman to nab the real killer. This they do, but their triumph is due less to clever deduction than plain dumb luck. The plot has holes as large as the Grand Canyon, but the stars perform with conviction and almost manage to make the whole thing credible. Howard Hawks' early sound prison melodrama, based on a play by Martin Flavin, already contains his stylistic signature of over-lapping dialogue -- a technique he would greatly expand upon in the next ten years. Walter Huston is district attorney Brady, who quickly convicts Robert Graham (Phillips Holmes) of murdering a man who was harassing his girlfriend. Brady is later made the warden of the prison where Robert is held. Brady tries to make friends with Robert, but Robert will have no dealings with the new warden. Nevertheless, Brady, who thinks Robert is a decent man who became embroiled in extraordinary circumstances, gives Robert a job as his chauffeur. As he drives with Brady's daughter Mary (Constance Cummings), the two fall in love.
