Between the two World Wars, the British Fascist movement was spearheaded by the high-born but low-principled Oswald Mosley. In this four-part miniseries, Jonathan Cake starred as Mosley, with Jemma Redgrave as his beleaguered first wife Cynthia. The miniseries, paradoxically scripted by a famous team of British sitcom writers, focused as much on Mosley's serial philandering as it did on his political activities, meaning that for every re-creation of a Mosley fascist rally, there was a steamy bedroom scene, usually enacted in the nude. Mosley debuted over Britain's Channel 4 on February 12, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Story of a Love Story may well be the least-known of John Frankenheimer's films. Filmed in France, the story concerns highly imaginative author Alan Bates. Though happily married, Bates enters into an affair with Dominique Sanda. Somehow, the whole experience seems unreal. Could Sanda be merely a character in one of Bates' novels, conjured up out of boredom? We won't reveal the answer here; let us just offer our congratulations to Frankenheimer for so stylishly breaking away from his standard "message" mode (as exemplified in The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May). Story of a Love Story was originally released as Impossible Object. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This film is Joseph Losey's mood piece that delves into the psychological makeup of Frank Jackson (Alain Delon), the assassin of exiled Russian Communist leader Leon Trotsky (Richard Burton). The tale chronicles the final few months of Trotsky's life, from the May 1940 raid upon Trotsky's Mexican compound until August of that year when Jackson's assassination attempt succeeded. Much of the film details how the shy and mysterious Jackson gained access to the compound through ingratiating himself with family friend Sylvia Ageloff (Romy Schneider). The reclusive Trotsky, seeing a part of himself in Jackson, begins to warm up to him, never realizing that Jackson will be the man to finally kill him. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The complex relationships among an Oxford professor, one of his students, and the young woman who captivates both of them is the subject of this difficult but rewarding drama. Director Joseph Losey and writer Harold Pinter had previously collaborated on 1963's The Servant, and they surrounded this recasting of a Nicholas Mosley novel with a similar atmosphere of ominous mystery. The story is presented through flashbacks and disconnected memories that trace the characters' interactions. Though the mood is occasionally brightened by satirical views of the academic world, the overall effect is rather somber, concerned with missed opportunities, unhealthy obsessions, and unavoidable regret. Dirk Bogarde superbly captures the pensive professor's torment, with able support from Jacqueline Sassard and Michael York as the younger couple. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi
