The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Made quickly on videotape to capitalize on celebrated kidnap victim Patty Hearst's recent rescue, Ordeal of Patty Hearst stars Lisa Eilbacher as the beleagured newspaper heiress. Hearst's secure existence is shattered when she is seized by a tiny terrorist group calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army. As the abductors deliver their ransom demands to Hearst's publisher father, they brainwash her into obedience to their cause. Unlike the much-later theatrical feature Patty Hearst, the made-for-TV Ordeal is told from the point of view of the FBI agent (Dennis Weaver) assigned to the case; in fact, more time is spent on the private life of the agent (who is on the eve of his retirement) than on Ms. Hearst herself. Ordeal of Patty Hearst works within its limited parameters, though it can hardly be considered the last word on the subject. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Take a comprehensive look at the Watergate scandal and explore the controversial career of the only United States president ever to resign from office as former President Richard M. Nixon sits down with probing journalist David Frost for an illuminating series of live, unscripted interviews. His fall from power was nothing short of spectacular, yet still Nixon remains one of the most fascinating and complex political figures of the entire 20th Century. In addition to serving as Nixon's first public appearance since his high profile resignation, these interviews offer candid insight into the mind of the man who stood at the center of American during a particularly turbulent era in our nation's history. Though Nixon's second term in office was cut short following the 1972 break-in at Democratic Party headquarters in Washington, D.C., journalist Frost attempts to get to the bottom of the Watergate scandal by engaging the former Commander in Chief in a candid and penetrating series of interviews. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
