Stephen King wrote his first original screenplay for this horror gore fest that features cameos by directors Clive Barker, Joe Dante, Tobe Hooper, John Landis, and King himself (playing a cemetery attendant). The story concerns a twilight people named "sleepwalkers" --creatures similar to vampires and werewolves whose faces turn animalistic whenever they are frightened or angry and who require the lifeforce of a virgin to survive. A single-parent sleepwalker family, consisting of Mary Brady (Alice Krige) and her son Charles (Brian Krause), have taken up residence in a small Indiana town. Charles has expressed a romantic interest in the attractive Tanya Robertson (Madchen Amick), a girl in his high school literature class. Mary wants Charles to lure Tanya home so that she can suck out her life force, but it appears that Charles has fallen in love with her --that is, until their first date, at a picnic at the cemetery. There Charles changes from a shy romantic suitor into a brutal and violent force, slapping Tanya around and attempting to rape her. But Tanya wards off his advances by plunging a corkscrew into his torso. Charles staggers back home to mother, where she nurses him back to health. Adopting a "then and now" approach, Logothetis alternates clips of these fighters in their prime with recently filmed interviews. This blood-soaked shocker seems to waver between standard horror and black comedy as it tells the tale of a young man who is so plagued by terrifying nightmares of a haunted prison that he is unable to function normally during the day. To understand the dreams, he goes to a dream interpreter who tells him the prison is the abandoned Alcatraz and that to stop the dreams, he must go there to face his fear. The young man brings a few skeptical friends with him. Once in the notorious, empty prison, the visage of a late rock star appears and explains the situation. Apparently the place is being haunted by the vile ghost of a US cavalry officer who enjoyed eating human flesh. The dead rocker then explains that the young man needs to destroy the demon before it kills again. The plot of this retrograde softcore film starts off when two American low-budget, sexploitation filmmakers arrive in Greece looking for females (whether for their filming or their own amusement does not seem to be relevant). A fellow named Scott (Brad Zutaut) tags along, and when all is said and done, transfers his affections from his fiancée to a woman waiting tables on the island of Rhodes. Part of the 88-minute running time here is devoted to a floating classroom with semi-nude students, the other part is dedicated to the filming of the sexploitation feature and the adventures of a few minor characters. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
