Matty Rich's Straight out of Brooklyn is an unflinching portrait of an African-American family struggling to survive in a Brooklyn housing project. The family's oldest son (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) decides that the easiest way to get his family out of the projects is by robbing a local drug dealer, but that plan turns disastrous when the pusher and his gang track the boy and his family down. Brandy for the Parson is a wafer-thin comedy with plenty of maritime humor. James Donald and Jean Lodge play a young couple on a yachting vacation. They agree to share a ride with a few seemingly benign fellow landlubbers. What they don't know (but we do) is that their "harmless" yacht-mates are actually running a slick brandy-smuggling operation. With a few alterations here and there, the basic premise of Brandy for the Parson bobbed to the surface again in 1969 for Disney's The Boatniks, which like the earlier film, benefitted from a strong cast of supporting comic players. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this early film from director Sir Carol Reed, Edmund Gwenn stars as Joe Higgins, a hardworking tugboat captain who is ecstatic when he learns that he has won a lucrative soccer pool. To celebrate, Higgins quits his job and invites all his pals to the local tavern for a wingding. But during the party, the validity of the Liverpudlian captain's win comes into question.
