Can one tough babe with a machine gun and nerves of steel save the world from total annihilation? After a global war has crushed civilization and destroyed democracy in the United States, small-time crook-turned-potential international overlord Ivan Kragov (Orestes Matacena) and his cohorts have made a remarkable discovery -- they've come across the control device that can launch every nuclear warhead in the American military arsenal. Kragov has stumbled upon the secret that could bring the world to its knees, and as he presents his demands to Max (David Fisher), head of the global law enforcement community, Max knows of only one place to turn. Max calls upon Kate Major (Kate Rodger), a beautiful but deadly warrior now behind bars for life, and offers her a deal -- she gets a full pardon if she can steal the launching mechanism away from Kragov before he and his crew can crack the security code. Gustavo (Rene Lavan) is an engineering student born and raised in Cuba who strongly believes in his nation's socialist ideals at a time when those ideals are crumbling around him. His girlfriend, Yolanda (Mayte Vilan), dreams of emigrating to Miami and making a life for herself as a professional dancer. His father, Tomas (Miguel Gutierrez), is a respected psychiatrist who he can barely support himself working at a state-run institution; he moonlights as a jazz pianist, where he makes four times his medical salary playing for tips to tourists at a nightclub. And his brother Bobby (Larry Villanueva) is a rock musician whose long hair and defiant posture have made him an enemy of the state and an outspoken opponent of Castro's regime; when yet another of his performances is shut down and his equipment is confiscated by police, Bobby, in an extreme act of protest, publicly injects himself with HIV-tainted blood, making clear that when presented with the slogan of "socialism or death," he would prefer the latter. Azucar Amarga was a highly personal project for director Leon Ichaso, a emigre from Havana who has offered one of the few portraits of Cuban unrest in the 1990s from a Cuban point-of-view. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Hyperactive mayhem results when a mild-manned banker discovers an ancient mask that transforms him into a zany prankster with superhuman powers in this special-effects-intensive comedy. The wildly improvisational Jim Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, a decent-hearted but socially awkward guy who one night finds a strange mask. Carrey's trademark energy reveals itself after Stanley puts on the mask and the banker transforms into The Mask, a green-skinned, zoot-suited fireball. The rubber-faced Mask possesses the courage to do the wild, fun things that Stanley fears, including romancing Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). In addition to Carrey's physical talents, the film makes effective use of digital visual effects that bestow the Mask with superhuman speed, insane flexibility, and popping eyes out of a Tex Avery cartoon. The larger narrative, involving the efforts of Tina's gangster boyfriend to destroy Stanley and use the mask's powers for evil, prove less interesting than the anarchic comic set pieces, including a particularly memorable dance number to "Cuban Pete." The film delivered enough laughs to become a surprise hit and, along with the same year's Dumb and Dumber, establish Carrey's status as a comedy superstar. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

In this comedy, a charming con man teams up with a boxer fallen on hard times in hopes of making some quick money. After doing time for selling art that turned out to be forged, Gabriel Caine (James Woods) and his partner Fitz (Oliver Platt) set their sights on a village called Diggstown; Fitz arrives first and takes several well-heeled locals in a high-stakes poker game, and then Gabriel follows to make a sporting proposition to John Gillon (Bruce Dern), the city's wealthiest citizen. Gabriel tells Gillon he has a boxer that can beat any ten opponents Gillon can line up, in the same day. Gillon takes the challenge and places a big enough wager to make matters even more interesting, but now Gabriel has to convince Honey Ray Palmer (Louis Gossett Jr.), a middle-aged former boxer who has been taken for a ride by Gabriel in the past, to go along with this scheme. In the meantime, Gabriel works out a deal with gangster Victor Corsini (Orestes Matacena) to back his bets while romancing Emily (Heather Graham), the sister of a large and ill-tempered fighter Gabriel met while behind bars. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

In a storyline as thin as the underwear worn by Cathy (Shari Shattuck) in the opening scenes, this housewife is having sex all by herself when a rapist armed with a knife bursts into the house. Her husband unexpectedly arrives on the scene, discovers the rapist, stabs him with his own knife, and then has a heart attack. Not exactly knowing what to do with two corpses, Cathy buries the rapist in the garden and stages a fake auto accident to explain her husband's untimely death. The problem is, his evil sister and her lover cannot be trusted -- but by now some viewers may not trust the plot either. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Rather than dramatize Castro's Cuban revolution as a central theme, this film made by Cubans in exile focuses on the disintegration of a young peasant's morality once he joins the revolutionary forces. The naive peasant was expecting adventure but before his stint in the military has ended, he is a trained killer, whether he is fully aware of it or not. When he takes up with a dance-hall woman in Havana and turns to drugs and alcohol, his decline accelerates, putting both his lover and his friends at the mercy of his slipping hold on stability. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This prison drama is taken from the play by Eduardo Corbe. The title refers to the term used by Fidel Castro to describe his political opponents (English translation -- "worms"). A sadistic inquisitor is relentless in his grilling of three men and two women who are captured in the Cuban jungle. Captain Morena (Mario Pena) is the pro-Castro military officer who is caught between party loyalty and what he believes is unfair treatment of the prisoners. He is torn between wanting to impress visiting Soviet officials and determining the fate of the captives. The first version of this film came out in 1977, but the prints were stolen and subsequently damaged. Restored prints were used in the new version, much of which had to be redone due to the extensive damage obviously orchestrated by minions loyal to Castro. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
