Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey find the two obtuse pals battling The Grim Reaper, God, robots, great philosophical questions, and girls -- although not necessarily in that order. In this loose parody of the Terminator movies, directed by Peter Hewitt, the ultimate has happened -- at Bill and Ted University of the future, for many years now the people of the world have been "excellent to each other." But fed-up with Bill and Ted's peaceful world and even more fed up with heavy metal, the evil De Nomolos (Joss Ackland) decides to do something about it. De Nomolos creates a cyborg Bill and Ted, who travel back in time to kill the original Bill and Ted, win the Battle of the Bands and pave the way for the hellish reign of De Nomolos. In the past of 1990, Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are immediately dispatched by the time-traveling cyborgs. And while the cyborgs Bill and Ted make time with the real Bill and Ted's girls (Sarah Trigger and Annette Azcuy) and prepare to take the real Bill and Ted's place in the Battle of the Bands, Bill and Ted are forced to deal with Hell ("Just like an Iron Maiden album cover"), the Grim Reaper (William Sadler), and God himself. This one-time 42nd Street midnight-movie favorite plays like a blackly comic blend of '50s cult-classic I Was a Teenage Werewolf and '80s horror satire Return of the Living Dead, set to an assortment of funky new-wave tunes. The story involves a gang of high school delinquents who murder the slimeball drug dealer (Steve McCoy) who sold them a substandard bag of weed, disposing of his body in a river laced with nuclear waste from a nearby power plant. Before long, the putrid pusher slithers to the surface as a sickly green zombie, bent on slaying the teens who dunked him in the drink. As a desperate countermeasure, the kids steal the body of the zombie's first victim from the morgue and dump him in the same river, creating an undead ally to defend them. Fred Williamson stars as Shep Stone, who becomes a private detective after being suspended from the police department. The usual sleazy setpieces deal with porno producers (one of whom, Bret Morrison, was the voice of The Shadow on radio), drugs, and murder. Teresa Graves (Get Christie Love!) co-stars with Rosemary Forsyth and The $6,000,000 Man's Richard Anderson in this average, but entertaining potboiler. Debuting July 16, 1973, the series originally yielded three episodes which were designed as a "pilot" to interest other CBC affiliates. Interest there was, and Inside Canada quickly became a network effort, remaining such until its final telecast on October 5, 1974. Not so much produced as stitched together, The Black Lash was ostensibly a sequel, with plenty of stock footage, to Frontier Revenge (1948). Duce Rago (Ray Bennett), whom Marshal (Al "Lash" LaRue) had shipped off to prison in the earlier adventure, is back but his stagecoach and train robberies leave a bit to be desired due to the stupidity of the hired help. Lawyer Bill Leonard (Byron Keith) suggests that they get some "heavy artillery," meaning good ol' Lash, who apparently was so disgusted with Rago only receiving a slap on the wrist for his previous crimes that he abandoned law enforcement for good. Naturally, our black-clad hero is working undercover with Cattlemen's Association agent Lem Woodruff (Kermit Maynard) and this time he manages to send Duce up the river for more than six months. Bennett, Sarah Padden, and Jim Bannon all repeated their roles from the earlier film; actually, the latter was apparently unavailable and a double was rather noticeably employed in all the new footage. Leading lady Peggy Stewart was also back, but her character had changed from an undercover agent in Frontier Revenge to a villainess in the return engagement. (Both Stewart and Ray Bennett visibly age from one scene to another.) Walter Greene's intrusive score is kept at a high pitch throughout even though not much is happening onscreen and the film's running time is stretched to an interminable length with seemingly endless chases on horseback, a sure sign of economy in scripting and execution. The fact that producers Ron Ormond and June Carr (Mrs. Ormond) stretched the Lash LaRue series well beyond the saturation point can only be explained by the popularity of LaRue's sidekick, Al St. John, whose Fuzzy Q. After becoming a promising star, cowboy star Lash LaRue's new series for producer Ron Ormond quickly fell into a groove of predictability. Thundering Trail, for example, offers very little that LaRue's fans hadn't seen already. LaRue is cast as the bodyguard of a newly elected territorial governor (played by Archie Twitchell, best known as the insinuating clothes salesman in Sunset Boulevard). The title King of the Bullwhip could only refer to one of two western-movie favorites: Lash LaRue or Whip Wilson. Since LaRue was under contract to Ron Ormond productions, it was LaRue who starred herein. Usually associated with the lowest of low-budget productions, LaRue is here surrounded with decent production values and an above-average cast, including Jack Holt, Anne Gwynne, Tom Neal, Michael Whalen, Dennis Moore and George Lewis. And, as always, LaRue is aided and abetted by trusty comical sidekick Al "Fuzzy" St. John. Likewise praiseworthy is the plot, a solid mystery yarn concerning an unknown bank robber. Just before its matriculation into Lippert Pictures, Screen Guild produced the fast-based boxing drama Ringside. Bantam-weight Don Barry stars as Mike, who forsakes a musical career for the boxing ring when his pugilist brother (Tom Brown) is blinded in a bout. Mike intends to confront the fighter (John Cason) who caused his brother's sightlessness, then "legally" kill the man in the ring. He is eventually talked out of this deadly strategy by his brother's girlfriend Janet (Sheila Ryan). The boxing sequences are well-lensed and tightly edited, compensation enough for the corny dialogue preceding them. They are assigned to catch a gang of outlaws working out of Rhyolite, a town run by Duce Rago (Ray Bennett), who is posing as a legitimate businessman. With the help of an elderly widow, Mrs. Owens (Sarah Padden), and a female undercover agent (Peggy Stewart), Lash and Fuzzy manage to infiltrate the gang and bring Rago and his henchman, Brant (former Western star Jim Bannon), to justice. The Ormonds produced a quite unnecessary sequel to this Western, The Black Lash (1952), which contained sequences lifted in their entirety from Frontier Revenge. Black-garbed cowboy hero Lash LaRue considered this low-budget series entry one of his best films, "best," of course, being a relative term. This time around Marshal LaRue is assigned to bring law and order to a town run by greedy saloon owner Lance Taggert (Marshall Reed), who had the last visiting lawman hanged on a trumped-up charge. LaRue escapes an assassination attempt by Taggert's henchman, Colt Jackson (John Cason), and discovers that the saloon owner is after the valley's water rights which legally belong to rancher Danny Phillips (Jimmie Martin) and his sister, Mary (Suzi Crandall). Impersonating a territorial land representative killed by Jackson, Lash and his sidekick, Fuzzy Q. Jones (Al St. John), manage to unmask Taggert and bring peace and prosperity back to the valley. Mark of the Lash was produced by the husband-and-wife team of Ron Ormond and June Carr, who had gotten both LaRue and St. John on the cheap after the demise of their previous employer, PRC. Neither of the Ormonds knew the first thing about filmmaking, a fact that quickly became obvious to their unsuspecting audience. Kay Francis, Martha Raye, Carole Landis and Mitzi Mayfair play "themselves," recreating their recent whirlwind tour of Europe and North Africa. This wisp of a plot takes a back seat to the musical numbers performed by the four stars, by Dick Haymes in his screen debut as a singing GI, and by guest stars Alice Faye, Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. Phil Silvers, George Jessel, and Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra also pop up to do their usual.
