Inspired by the true-life crimes of the notorious Baseline serial killer, director Ulli Lommell's grim shocker tells the tale of a festive loft-warming party gone horribly awry. It was the spring of 2004. A rash of killings had occurred in southern Phoenix, just along Baseline Road, and the local police were desperate for leads. Meanwhile, a group of childhood friends gathers to reminisce about the past, and celebrate the good fortune of one of their own. When the topic of conversation turns to a serial killer that's said to be stalking the community, the hostess shrugs it all off as an urban legend told to keep the local teens in line. When the electricity is cut and the first gunshots ring out, however, the frightened skeptic must outsmart the murderous madman who's always one step ahead of his prey. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

With his direct-to-video crime thriller Curse of the Zodiac, goremeister Ulli Lommel recreates the terrifying events perpetuated by the notorious Zodiac Killer, who unleashed a torrent of wrath and misery on San Francisco citizens during the early '70s - and left only a baffling series of signs and symbols as his calling card. A tormented rock star being stalked by a malevolent killer receives valuable advice from the master of macabre in director Ulli Lommel's cinematic tribute to legendary horror author Edgar Allan Poe. As a child, Lenore was surrounded by darkness. It was during those grim and frightening days that the terrified girl became acquainted with the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. These days, Lenore has achieved fame as the singer in a Los Angeles-based rock band, but unfortunately her high-profile status has made her the target of a supernatural killer. After seeing her friends and colleagues fall one by one to a murderous force from beyond the mortal realm, the terrified singer is horrified to discover that she is to become the next victim of the seemingly omnipotent murderer. Though at first Lenore feels as if all hope is lost, a nighttime visit from the author whose works helped her survive some of the darkest days of her childhood offers a fighting chance of cheating death. Meanwhile, in the mountaintop lair of the Raven, where the bloodied bodies of his victims lie desecrated, a ghostly killer prepares to claim his most prized victim. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The Polish-born character actor-cum-slasher film director Ulli Lommel helms the 2006 direct-to-video horror picture The Black Dahlia, not to be confused with Brian De Palma's A-budget feature The Black Dahlia from the same year. Whereas the De Palma film dramatizes the infamous 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short and the investigation that ensued, Lommel's picture instead concerns a series of contemporary L.A.-area homicides patterned after the 1947 slaying. It stars Elissa Dowling, Sutton Christopher, and Christian Behm, and tells of a "copycat" serial killer who reads of the 1947 murder and goes on a rampage in modern-day Los Angeles, producing a series of partially mutilated female bodies in dumpsters in emulation of Elizabeth Short's murderer. A rookie cop and his partner happen upon several of the corpses and must track down the psychopath in order to end his menace forever. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Veteran Boogey Man and Zodiac Killer director Ulli Lommel continues his long tradition of delivering tense thrills with this relentless look at the life of the elusive, Kansas-based serial killer known to authorities only as "B.T.K." before his arrest in February of 2005. A sadistic madman who left no clues at the scene of his crimes except for the ominous calling card of "Bind. Torture. Kill.," the man who eluded authorities for over three decades was finally captured by authorities after once again giving in to his bloodlust and embarking on a vicious killing spree. Though his murderous exploits had finally come to a close and the residents of Wichita could comfortably breathe a sigh of relief, the horrors that Dennis Rader (aka the B.T.K. killer) inflicted upon the frightened community offer a chilling reminder that even the most upstanding of citizens can harbor dark and frightening secrets. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Ulli Lommel's atmospheric chiller opens with a violent prologue in the 17th-century Colonial town of Devonsville, where a trio of local women are accused of witchcraft by the zealous locals and executed in gory fashion by pitchfork-wielding vigilantes. Flash forward to the present, where the arrival of three progressive young women ignites the same superstitious paranoia among the current generation of townsfolk -- who perceive their new visitors' arrival as the culmination of an ages-old curse. The pretty new schoolteacher (Suzanna Love), plagued by ominous visions, consults the local psychiatrist (Donald Pleasence), whose hypnotic regression therapy reveals the true nature of her ancestry -- which finally surfaces when a new group of vigilantes begins the inevitable witch-hunt. Moody and well-photographed (Lommel once studied under legendary German auteur (Rainier Werner Fassbinder), this film tends to cloud its basically feminist theme with some rather exploitative gross-out effects -- particularly the depiction of Pleasence's ancestral curse, which has him constantly digging tiny worms from various parts of his body. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
