Sleazy George Emory (Ted DeCorsia) presents retired general Roger Brandon with an offer he may not be able to refuse: Unless Brandon steps down as head of an anti-crime commission, Emory will make public several compromising photographs of Brandon's wife Laura (Bettye Ackerman). Much to Emory's surprise, Brandon calls his bluff--only to be rewarded for his courageous stand when he is framed for Emory's murder. In India, UNCLE agent Solo tangles with a murderous cult of Thuggees, led by a fanatical Maharajah (Murray Matheson). In their haste to rob and murder the passengers of a downed plane, the Thuggees have stolen UNCLE's new polygraph device. As Solo attempts to retrieve the polygraph, he faces deadly competition in the form of THRUSH agent Tom Simpson (Linden Chiles). Two "celebrity wives" appear in the guest cast: Kamala Devi, at the time Mrs. Chuck Connors, and Neile Adams, the then-wife of Steve McQueen. A pre-Man From U.N.C.L.E. Robert Vaughn appears in this episode, in which Elliot Ness (Robert Stack) is offered a hefty fee to act as executor to the estate of deceased gangster Frank Argo (Paul Birch). It seems that Frank has left millions of dollars in negotiable bonds to his son Charlie, who has apparently vanished from the face of the earth. Ness is expected to locate Charlie so that the boy can collect the fortune. But Frank's former moll Marcie (Patricia Owen) and hooldum Arno Beale (Christopher Dark) have a different plan: They intend to "invent" a Charlie Argos to claim the inheritance--whereupon they will grab it up for themselves. And as luck would have it, there happens to be a soup-kitchen volunteer (Robert Vaughn) who could pass as Charlie's twin brother. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This episode is set in the late 1920s, explaining why Federal agent Elliot Ness (Robert Stack) appears to still be a bachelor. Bootlegger Pete "The Persuader" Kalminski has been encountering a lot of trouble getting his shipments past Ness and the Untouchables. Enter Joey December (Steven Hill), a second-generation railroad owner facing bankruptcy. For a piece of the action, Joey offers to tranport the liquor right under the Feds' noses on his railroad cars. It seems like the perfect set-up--until Joey commits the fatal error of trying to shake down Kalminski for additional money, using as leverage the written "deathbed confession" of one of Al Capone's boys. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A loose remake of the 1931 Richard Barthelmess vehicle of the same name, The All-American stars Tony Curtis as college football star Nick Bonnell. When his parents are killed in a traffic accident while taking a bus trip to see him play, Nick quits football cold. Later on he accepts a scholarship at a small college, but still refuses to resume his gridiron activities--at least for a while. Never the life of the party to begin with, Nick runs afoul of his snooty fellow students and is kicked out of school. Somehow or other, however, he manages to show up during the crucial fourth quarter of the Big Game. Lori Nelson plays requisite heroine Sharon Wallace, who helps draw the taciturn Nick out of his shell, while Mamie Van Doren does what Mamie Van Doren usually does. While the football sequences are exciting, the film is a bit hard to take at times, especially when the 20-plus college freshman Nick is advised by his professors to grin and bear it when he's hazed by the much-younger upper classmen. At the time The All-American was released, much was made of the fact that producer Aaron Rosenberg and director Jess Hibbs had both been USC All-American footballers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
