First telecast on September 16, 1962, the CBC public-affairs program Document was subsequently scheduled on an erratic, intermittent basis for the next seven years, except for a lengthy hiatus in 1966. In keeping with its title, the series was a collection of independently produced documentaries, put together by such noteworthy Canadian filmmakers as Allan King, Beryl Fox, and Ross McLean. Among the subjects covered were Prime Minister John Diefenaker, singer Joan Baez, and such hot-potato issues as feminism, racism, drug use, and the Canadian prison system. During 1965, the series was seen as a monthly replacement for the news show This Hour Has Seven Days; and in 1967, it performed a similar monthly function for another series, The Way It Is. The final installment of Document was broadcast on May 27, 1969. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
