Alan LeMay Movies
Alan LeMay was one of a relative handful of published authors -- Richard Brooks, Niven Busch, and James Edward Grant are others in the same -- who found a permanent and highly lucrative home in Hollywood, and, who also made further contributions to movies as a producer and director. LeMay was born in Indianapolis, IN, in 1899, and attended Stetson University in Florida and the University of Chicago, from which he graduated in 1922. He went into ranching in California, but the economic upheavals of the '30s forced him into bankruptcy. Luckily, he had his literary career to fall back on, which eventually led him to Hollywood. He began writing fiction during the '20s, generating a novel each year for more than a decade. Although he was born in the Midwest and educated in Florida and Chicago, most of LeMay's writing and a large portion of his screenplays would be set in Texas. His fiction included Painted Ponies (1927), Old Father of the Waters (1928), Pelican Coast (1929), One of Us Is a Murderer (1930), Bug Eye (1931), Gunsight Trail (1931), Winter Range (1932), Cattle Kingdom (1933), Thunder in the Dust (1934), The Smokey Years (1935), Deep Water Island (1936), and Empire for a Lady (1937).It was in 1940 that Hollywood beckoned, and LeMay was soon working at Paramount as a specialist in adventure stories. He was assigned right from the starting gate to co-author the screenplay for Cecil B. DeMille's epic Northwest Mounted Police (1940), a sprawling story of conflict on the Canadian frontier. He followed up a year later with work on Reap the Wild Wind (1941), a two-fisted adventure tale set in the early days of the American republic which was also produced and directed by DeMille. LeMay completed his hat trick for the legendary filmmaker in 1944 with co-authorship of the screenplay for the topical World War II drama The Story of Dr. Wassell. That same year, LeMay also co-wrote the screenplay for The Adventures of Mark Twain, produced by Jesse L. Lasky at Warner Bros. with Irving Rapper directing. Apart from his occasional shift into historical biographies, most of LeMay's writing and screenplays were rooted in fiction and focused upon self-motivated loner heroes, whose most obvious loyalties seldom extended far beyond family and their very closest friends, and often took some violent and perverse turns along the way. Another fixture in many of his scripts was the presence of tempestuous, independent-minded women who frequently challenged the men around them in such areas as fighting prowess, marksmanship, or authority.
LeMay resumed writing fiction in 1943 with Useless Cowboy, the screen rights to which were picked up by Cinema Artists Corporation with Gary Cooper starring and produced the resulting movie Along Came Jones (1945). Nunnally Johnson's script walked a fine line between comedy and melodrama, and the resulting movie was a good deal lighter in texture and tone, as well as shorter than the films that LeMay himself had written to date. This soon changed as LeMay began writing a short string of more modestly proportioned Westerns for Warner Bros., none of which were terribly distinguished cinematically, although one of them, San Antonio (1945) (co-written with W.R. Burnett), did star Errol Flynn and offered the novel denouement of a shootout in the deserted Alamo. After 1948, LeMay made the rounds of the major studios, writing the screenplay for Tap Roots at Universal and The Walking Hills (1949) at Columbia. At the close of the '40s, LeMay formed a film company of his own, Arfran Productions, with director George Templeton. This gave him the opportunity to direct the psychological Western drama High Lonesome (1950) and to do some directing for Eagle Lion Films. From his own screenplay starring John Drew Barrymore, he also adapted one of his novels, Thunder in the Dust, into The Sundowners (1950) (also at Eagle Lion), a drama of deadly sibling rivalry on the frontier, co-starring Barrymore and directed by Templeton. He was back at Warner Bros. that same year for Rocky Mountain (another Errol Flynn vehicle) and wrote the screenplay for Quebec, a historical drama dealing with the province's rebellion against British rule, starring Barrymore and directed by Templeton at Paramount. LeMay returned to the field of historical biographies with I Dream of Jeannie (1952), based on the life of Stephen Foster and, that same year, worked on Raoul Walsh's colorful and somewhat fact-based swashbuckler Blackbeard the Pirate. A year later, he turned up as the screenwriter for Flight Nurse, directed by Allan Dwan.
The mid-'50s saw LeMay back in Westerns again, writing the script for Republic Pictures' release of The Vanishing American (1955), a remake of the 1926 silent Paramount hit directed by Joseph Kane. LeMay's big success during this period, however, was with his novel The Searchers (1954), a tale of one family during a tragic interaction between whites and Native Americans on the Texas frontier in the 1860s. The rights to the novel were purchased by John Ford and Warner Bros., and the story was transformed by Frank Nugent into one of the best screenplays that Ford ever had to work with. The resulting film, though not perfectly true to LeMay's book, is generally regarded as the best of Ford's late films and a high point of his career. Two years after The Searchers, LeMay published The Siege at Dancing Bird, which was later retitled The Unforgiven. The rights to that novel (which essentially told the story of the preceding novel in reverse) were purchased by John Huston and he turned it into one of his very best films, The Unforgiven (1960), starring Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn. LeMay published one more novel, By Dim and Flaring Lamps (1962), but by the late '60s, his bleak, lonely vision of the West had been squeezed out by the more violent sensibilities of the Italian-made Spaghetti Westerns and the growing liberalism of audiences. Alan LeMay died in 1964 after an extended illness, and in the decades since, has been largely forgotten apart from his authorship of the source novels for The Searchers and The Unforgiven. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
One of Hollywood's most famous and acclaimed directors, John Huston guides this western with an unerring hand -- the cast of notable stars is no drawback either. Setting up the story with a series of suspenseful scenes, Huston has a mysterious stranger on horseback come into a small community in the Texas Panhandle and then proceed to cause a mini-war. The time is the mid-19th century and there is already antagonism between the white settlers in the community and the local Kiowa Indian nation. The Zachary family is at the crux of the trouble. Matilda (Lillian Gish) is the matriarch who holds a family secret -- her adopted daughter Rachel (Audrey Hepburn) is actually a Kiowa child. There are three brothers in the Zachary family, and one of them, Ben (Burt Lancaster) is obviously in love with Rachel. Another, Cash (Audie Murphy) hates Native Americans, while the youngest (Doug McClure) is there to defend the family when they need it. The stranger on horseback has done the unthinkable, he has made it widely known that Rachel is a Kiowa -- and then the battles begin. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

If John Ford is the greatest Western director, The Searchers is arguably his greatest film, at once a grand outdoor spectacle like such Ford classics as She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950) and a film about one man's troubling moral codes, a big-screen adventure of the 1950s that anticipated the complex themes and characters that would dominate the 1970s. John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who returns to his brother Aaron's frontier cabin three years after the end of the Civil War. Ethan still has his rebel uniform and weapons, a large stash of Yankee gold, and no explanations as to where he's been since Lee's surrender. A loner not comfortable in the bosom of his family, Ethan also harbors a bitter hatred of Indians (though he knows their lore and language well) and trusts no one but himself. Ethan and Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), Aaron's adopted son, join a makeshift band of Texas Rangers fending off an assault by renegade Comanches. Before they can run off the Indians, several homes are attacked, and Ethan returns to discover his brother and sister-in-law dead and their two daughters kidnapped. While they soon learn that one of the girls is dead, the other, Debbie, is still alive, and with obsessive determination, Ethan and Martin spend the next five years in a relentless search for Debbie -- and for Scar (Henry Brandon), the fearsome Comanche chief who abducted her. But while Martin wants to save his sister and bring her home, Ethan seems primarily motivated by his hatred of the Comanches; it's hard to say if he wants to rescue Debbie or murder the girl who has lived with Indians too long to be considered "white." John Wayne gives perhaps his finest performance in a role that predated screen antiheroes of the 1970s; by the film's conclusion, his single-minded obsession seems less like heroism and more like madness. Wayne bravely refuses to soft-pedal Ethan's ugly side, and the result is a remarkable portrait of a man incapable of answering to anyone but himself, who ultimately has more in common with his despised Indians than with his more "civilized" brethren. Natalie Wood is striking in her brief role as the 16-year-old Debbie, lost between two worlds, and Winton C. Hoch's Technicolor photography captures Monument Valley's savage beauty with subtle grace. The Searchers paved the way for such revisionist Westerns as The Wild Bunch (1969) and McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), and its influence on movies from Taxi Driver (1976) to Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and Star Wars (1977) testifies to its lasting importance. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The oft-filmed Zane Grey yarn The Vanishing American is given respectful treatment in this Republic "A" production. Eliminating Grey's premise that the American Indian's downfall was all part of Nature's scheme of things, the film begins in the late 19th century, with Scott Brady starring as Navajo protagonist Blandy. Embittered not only by deceitful whites but also by renegade Apaches, Blandy hopes to prevent further decimation of his people by stemming the activities of crooked Indian agent Blucher (Gene Lockhart) and duplicitious trader Morgan (Forrest Tucker). Blandy's allies include white landowner Marian Warner (Audrey Totter), whose open rangeland is dearly coveted by the nefarious Blucher and Morgan. The life of Stephen Foster, one of America's greatest and best-loved songwriters of the 19th century, sets the stage for this musical biography. Foster (Bill Shirley) is a shy bookkeeper who writes songs in his spare time. He is madly in love with Inez McDowell (Muriel Lawrence), but she isn't interested in him, and she eventually gives him the brush-off. However, Inez's sister Jeanie (Eileen Christy) carries a torch for Foster, and in time, he finds happiness with her. Jeanie's inspiration leads Foster to write some of his best known songs, which brings him success in the music business and allows him to leave bookkeeping behind. Along with the title tune, the soundtrack features such Foster classics as "My Old Kentucky Home", "Swanee River", "Camptown Races", "Oh! Robert Newton exhibits absolutely no shame in his portrayal of the title character in Blackbeard the Pirate. If you thought that Newton's "Arr, matey"s got out of hand in Treasure Island, wait til you see this one. The plot concerns the efforts of the British admirality to bring Blackbeard to justice. To that end, officer Keith Andes allows himself to be abducted by the pirate's minions. Also captured by Blackbeard is luscious Linda Darnell, the adopted daughter of Andes' superior Torin Thatcher. When it turns out that everyone is being double-crossed by the insidious Thatcher, all Technicolor hell breaks loose. William Bendix costars as Blackbeard's chief henchman, appearing to be a model of subtlety when compared to his costar. Future "Beverly Hillbilly" Irene Ryan has some nice moments as Linda Darnell's lady-in-waiting. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In keeping with the postwar trend of on-location shooting, Quebec was actually lensed in Canada, rather than on some Hollywood back lot or other. Set in 1837, the film recounts a skirmish between French and English factions over whether or not Quebec would remain a province, or split off into its own country. Heading the separatist movement is Lafleur (Corinne Calvet). John Barrymore Jr. co-stars as Mark Douglas, a loyal Canadian who discovers that Lafleur is his long-lost mother. Quebec winds up with a well-staged military assault on Lafleur's fortress. Billed eighth in the cast is former silent-screen star Patsy Ruth Miller, making her first screen appearance since 1931. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Filmed in a two-tone process called Cinecolor, The Sundowners is a compact little western making good use of an old Hollywood chestnut. Robert Preston and Robert Sterling play two brothers who find themselves on opposite sides of the legal fence. Since Sterling rather than Preston has the mustache this time, Sterling's the bad guy. Caught in the crossfire is Preston's son, who is menaced by Sterling. This 1950 version should not be confused with the 1960 Warners film of the same name, which is set on an Australian sheep ranch. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Rocky Mountain was planned as a big budget western, but Warner Bros. pared down both its budget and its length to "programmer" dimensions. Errol Flynn plays a Confederate officer trying to recruit troops in California. Unfortunately the only folks interested in the Southern cause are bandits and drifters, so Flynn has to watch his back. The fiancee (Patrice Wymore) of a Union Army officer (Scott Forbes) is rescued from an Indian attack by Flynn's men, but they are reluctant to release her lest she tip off their whereabouts. A Yankee patrol headed by the girl's fiance is captured by Flynn, but he eventually allows the Yanks and the girl safe passage in order to save them from an Indian massacre. Rocky Mountain was no great advance in cinematic art, but it did serve to introduce Errol Flynn to Patrice Wymore, who became his third (and last) wife. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When there is a sudden outbreak of mysterious murders in the Texas Big Bend country, a young drifter new to the area, played by John Barrymore, is the prime suspect. Captured and held for the murders, the rancher who is holding Barrymore does not realize that he has been set up to take the fall for these murders by some men who were thought to have been killed years before in a range war. Now these despicable men are back and are getting their own revenge on those who were involved in the range war which left them wounded. ~ Tana Hobart, All Movie Guide

The Walking Hills stars Randolph Scott as a Westerner named Jim Carey. He is one of several people searching for a lost gold mine. Carey's cohorts in this treasure hunt include at least one convicted murderer and several potential killers, so it's a source of wonder who'll survive till fade-out time (veteran moviegoers will probably consider it a safe bet that grizzled old Edgar Buchanan won't be one of the survivors). Lust and greed collide head-on when gorgeous Chris Jackson (Ella Raines) enters the picture. Like most Randolph Scott oaters, The Walking Hills is longer on tension than fast action; director John Sturges would later employ the same cat-and-mouse formula in Bad Day at Black Rock (1954). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Set at the beginning of the Civil War, Tap Roots is all about a county in Mississippi which chooses to secede from the state rather than enter the conflict. The county is protected from the Confederacy by an abolitionist (Ward Bond) and a Native American gentleman (Boris Karloff). The abolitionist's daughter (Susan Hayward) is courted by a powerful newspaper publisher (Van Heflin) when her fiance (Whitfield Connor), a confederate officer, elopes with the girl's sister (Julie London). The daughter at first resists the publisher's attentions, but turns to him for aid when her ex-fiance plans to capture the seceding county on behalf of the South. A pocket-edition Gone With the Wind, Tap Roots is way too ambitious for its smallish budget. Modern viewers can have fun spotting such anachronisms as the Southern troops' use of dynamite--several years before it was invented. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A mysterious crook by the name of "The Poet" is robbing Wells Fargo stages and creating havoc in the Old West. The sheriff is having no luck discovering the desperado's identity; when he comes across James Wylie (Dennis Morgan), a gambler who is running from the law in Carson City, he blackmails him into going undercover and tracking the outlaw down. Wylie takes the next coach out, joined by two tantalizing women, Ann (Jane Wyman) and Emily (Janis Paige). Emily is just a saloon singer (which affords her the chance to croon "I'm So in Love" and "Going Back to Old Cheyenne"), but it turns out that Ann is more unusual -- she's the wife of The Poet. The two team up to track him down (encountering The Sundance Kid and his gang along the way) -- and discover that they make a pretty good team. A popular TV series of the same name was loosely based upon the movie; starring Clint Walker, it ran for 7 years starting in 1955. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide

Zane Grey, that bottomless bounty of inspiration for Hollywood westerns, wrote the novel upon which Gunfighters was based. Randolph Scott stars as a gunslinger who's vowed to kill no more. He goes to work for a land baron (Griff Barnett) who's been driving out neighboring ranchers by fair means and foul. The baron's nice daughter (Dorothy Hart) falls for Scott, while the girl's nastier sister (Barbara Britton) is obsessed by her father's vicious henchman Bruce Cabot. Scott eventually chooses the right side in the ranch war, leading to a showdown with Cabot--and the breaking of his vow to never again fire a gun. Gunfighters was photographed in Cinecolor, a process that produced pleasing reds and blues but ignored yellows and greens. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Gary Cooper added "producer" alongside "star" on his resume with this light-hearted Western about a mild-mannered cowboy (Cooper) who drifts into a small town with his sidekick (William Demarest). Naturally, he's mistaken for a notorious highway robber (Dan Duryea), although he can barely handle a gun. His impersonation of the menacing gunman falls apart when his skills are put to the test, and he faces certain doom when challenged by the returning gunman himself. In the end, however, our hero defeats the villain and even ends up with his girl (Loretta Young). A send-up of both Western clichés and Cooper's own heroic persona, Along Came Jones is brisk, amusing entertainment. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

In his final epic Western, Errol Flynn plays cattleman Clay Hardin, who, on a trek south of the border, has discovered that San Antonio saloon proprietor Roy Stuart (Paul Kelly) is actually a cattle rustler of major proportions. Determined to bring Stuart to justice, Clay runs into difficulties when he mistakes feted chanteuse Jeanne Starr (Alexis Smith) for being on the saloon owner's payroll. Meanwhile, Stuart's French-accented partner, and enemy, Legare (Victor Francen), uses the taut situation to benefit himself. Then Clay's longtime friend, Charlie Bell (John Litel), is brutally slain and Jeanne's manager, Sacha Bozic (S.Z. Sakall) is forced to skip town, Bozic, unbeknownst to Clay, having witnessed the murder. The real killer is eventually forced to confess and San Antonio erupts in a climactic gun battle that culminates in a shootout at the historic Alamo. With Hungarian actor Sakall providing some much-needed comedy relief, Alexis Smith, Doodles Weaver, and a chorus perform a few songs, including: Ray Heindorf, M.K. Jerome, and Ted Koehler's "Some Sunday Morning"; "Put Your Little Foot Right Out," by Larry Spier; and Jack Scholl and Charles Kisco's "Somewhere in Monterey." Dismissed by critics as corny and obvious in 1944, this overlong but sincere biopic looks pretty good when seen today, cliches notwithstanding. Fredric March, 47 at the time, convincingly plays American author Sam Clemens, aka Mark Twain, from his early 20s to his death at 75. In typical movie-biography fashion, every single incident that happens in Twain's life is an INSPIRATION: he hears the depth-indication call "Mark Twain" while working on a riverboat and his face lights up; he engages in a jumping-frog contest against Bret Harte (John Carradine) and comes up with his first popular published story; and so on. Alexis Smith is better than usual in the role of Twain's wife Olivia Langdon, even keeping a straight face while Twain courts her in Fluent Quotation ("Everybody talks about the weather but nobody ever does anything about it", he says during a Hollywood-romance cloudburst). Though the script barely touches upon the dark side of Twain's nature, we are not spared his financial reverses (brought about by bad investments and his struggle to publish Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs. The closing sequence, with Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn beckoning the spirit of Mark Twain to heaven as Halley's Comet fills the skies, may seem laughable on paper, but works quite well on film; even director Irving Rapper expressed amazement at the effectiveness of this scene! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The genesis of The Story of Dr. Wassell is said to have been a story told by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to director Cecil B. DeMille. Gary Cooper stars as Corydon M. Wassell, a real-life country doctor from Arkansas who worked as a medical missionary in China in the years prior to WWII. When America enters the war, Dr. Wassell joins the Navy and is shipped to Java. As the Japanese overtake the island, Wassell is placed in charge of the wounded evacuated marines. Ordered to leave the area immediately, the doctor disobeys his commands, staying behind to care for ten seriously wounded men from the USS Marblehead, even as Japanese bombs rain down upon his staff. With the help of other stranded allied troops, Wassell and his wounded make it to Australia, where despite his insubordination he is lauded as a hero. Not as much of a spectacular as earlier DeMille films, The Story of Dr. Wassell concentrates on personalities, with mixed results. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Cecil B. DeMille's Technicolor historical spectacle Reap the Wild Wind was to have starred Gary Cooper, but Cooper's prior commitment to Goldwyn's Pride of the Yankees compelled DeMille to recast the leading role with John Wayne. The film, set in the mid-19th century, centers around Key West, Florida, where piracy reigns unchecked. Wayne plays the captain of a salvage business, working on behalf of Raymond Massey to rescue valuables from the merchant ships wrecked by pirates. During one expedition, Wayne is rescued from drowning by Paulette Goddard, the hoydenish manager of a rival salvage firm. Goddard arranges for Wayne to go to work for her boss, Ray Milland, and a romantic rivalry ensues. Later on, Goddard's cousin Susan Hayward is lost at sea when her ship is attacked by pirates. Wayne is accused of engineering the wreck, thanks to the duplicity of Massey, the real brains of the pirate operation. Wayne and Milland both don deep-sea diving gear and swim to the bottom in search of evidence. When Milland is attacked by an octopus, Wayne saves his rival's life at the expense of his own. Massey is exposed, and Milland wins Goddard. Essentially a standard maritime meller, Reap the Wild Wind takes on the veneer of importance thanks to DeMille's epic treatment of the material. Though competition is fierce, Ray Milland steals the show with a truly offbeat characterization (he even gets to indulge in a little ventriloquism!) ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Cecil B. De Mille directed this lavish all-star spectacular paying tribute to America's neighbors to the North. In 1885, as Louis Riel (Francis J. McDonald) tries to organize Indians and French settlers into a fighting force that will battle against the ruling British, Texas Ranger Dusty Rivers (Gary Cooper) arrives in Canada to arrest Jacques Corbeau (George Bancroft), one of Riel's associates who is wanted for murder in the U.S. Rivers promptly falls for nurse April Logan (Madeleine Carroll), which triggers jealously in the straightlaced Mountie sergeant Jim Brett (Preston S. Foster), who is also in love with April. Meanwhile, April's brother, Ronnie Logan (Robert Preston), also a member of the North West Mounted Police, is in love with Louvette (Paulette Goddard), Corbeau's sister and a fiery "half-breed" who lives among the Indians. When Dusty arrives in Canada, he joins forces with the mounties, who are looking for Corbeau on another murder charge, and soon joins the fight against Riel's rebel factions. De Mille imported 300 pine trees for his "forest" set, believing that a woods created on the controlled environment of a soundstage would look more "real" onscreen than location shooting in Canada. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
