Lew Landers Movies

Honored by movie historian Don Miller as "the chief of staff of Columbia B operations," director Lew Landers began his Hollywood career calling the shots on such Universal serials as Red Rider (1934) and Tailspin Tommy (1936). Billed under his real name of Louis Friedlander during his first year at Universal, he was also responsible for the excellent Karloff/Lugosi chiller The Raven (1935). Travelling under the name Lew Landers from 1936 onward, he piloted several more Universal and RKO programmers before setting up shop at Columbia. Amidst such forgettable efforts as The Stork Pays Off (1942) and U-Boat Prisoner (1942), Landers made a commendable return to the horror genre with Return of the Vampire (1944, again with Lugosi), Cry of the Werewolf (1944) and Soul of a Monster (1944). After 1946, Landers free-lanced at several lower-rung studios, touched bases with the Columbia B unit again, and finally channeled his energies into television. The Cruel Tower is a dog-and-pony variation of a well-worn triangle plot. John Ericson is a handsome young steeplejack, working side-by-side on a dizzying new structure with brooding partner Charles McGraw. Mari Blanchard is McGraw's beautiful young wife, whose history of illicit romances immediately arouses McGraw's suspicions vis-a-vis Ericson. The problem with all of these "dangerous profession" mellers is that the villain invariably hatches a scheme to make a murder look like an accident--and nearly always ends up the victim of his own scheme. Eva Gabor, who would later costar with Arnold the Pig on TV's Green Acres, is the slave girl. She falls in love with him instead, standing by his side as he fights his way through reels and reels of stock footage from old Hollywood swashbucklers. Whether true or not (evidence indicates "not"), the legend of Captain John Smith and Pochahontas is one of history's great romantic stories. This 1953 filmization of the story was made on a near-nonexistent budget. Anthony Dexter, who two seasons earlier had starred in the unsuccessful biopic Valentino, plays Captain Smith, while Jody Lawrence, a Columbia all-purpose heroine, is Indian maiden Pocahontas. After rescuing Smith from the wrath of her father (Douglass Dumbrille), Pocahontas is presented to the court of Britain's King James II. Mark Stevens stars as a Navy pilot named Bingham in this paean to the modern-day submarine service. Covering the years 1941 to 1952, Torpedo Alley details Bingham's training as a sub commander. Feeling guilty for the deaths of several of his fellow pilots, he signs up for submarine service at the end of WW II. He proves equal to his task, though it takes a great deal of soul searching, coupled with the tender ministrations of his lady friend Susan (Dorothy Malone), before Bingham is able to overcome his guilt complex and assume a command position again. Torpedo Alley was co-written by Sam Roeca (who later supervised such above-average children's programs as Valley of the Dinosaurs and Land of the Lost) and actor Warren Douglas. Monogram Studios certainly got its money's worth out of contractee Wayne Morris, profitably plunking him into virtually every film genre known to man. In Arctic Flight, Morris plays an Alaskan bush pilot named Mike, hired to take a tenderfoot named Wetherby (Alan Hale Jr.) on a hunting trip. It soon develops that Wetherby is actually--gasp--a communist spy, who intends to take photos of Alaskan military installations on behalf of the Kremlin. By the time Mike finds this out, Wetherby has ingratiated himself with everyone in the region, thus no one believes Our Hero's shouts of "Red! Red!" The tension mounts steadily to an edge-of-seat climax. Wealthy landowner Fredo Brios (John Dehner) feverishly opposes all efforts by Californians seeking to become a part of the United States, and to that end Brios hires bandit Jose Martinez (Alfonso Bedoya) to help forge an alliance with Russia. And that's not all: Jungle Jim is confronted by a legendary "giant man," actually a clever hoax cooked up by a tribe of mercenary natives to drive district commissioner Kingston (Lester Matthews) out of office. Hoping to force Lucille Ball into breaking her contract, Columbia Pictures chieftain Harry Cohn assigned her to the low-budget Arabian Nights escapade The Magic Carpet. Much to Cohn's amazement, the plucky Ball agreed to appear in the film, forcing Columbia to pay her salary until her option ran out. Contrary to popular belief, Ball is not the heroine of the film; in fact, she's the villainess, an opportunistic Iraqi princess named Narah. She aligns herself with the usurping Caliph of Bagdad (Gregory Gay) and his chief henchman Boreg (Raymond Burr), while the true caliph Ramoth (John Agar), unaware of his birthright, performs acts of derring-do as "The Scarlet Falcon." Patricia Medina co-stars as Ramoth's impulsive love interest, who proves to be quite a nuisance for everyone involved and is obliged to spend a good portion of the film in chains and ropes. It is giving away nothing to reveal that the film's climax occurs during the obligatory Big Race.
