In this freewheeling spoof of the old radio and television series You Are There, modern-day tabloid reporter Nevil (Michael Hurst) literally goes to Hell and back to get the lowdown on Xena's (Lucy Lawless) latest mission. The muckraking Nevil is somehow convinced that Xena's efforts to get the golden apples of Valhalla, which when eaten bestow instant immortality, is merely a ploy to increase her own powers. A woman tracking a dangerous criminal discovers the criminal may be tracking her as well in this thriller. Trish Burchall (Kelly McGillis) is an investigative reporter whose latest assignment has her tracking a serial killer who has been murdering young women and then moving on to kill their families. While Burchall feels the people have the right to know about the danger this killer poses to them, the local authorities are trying to keep their investigation under wraps and refuse to cooperate with her. The more Burchall learns about this violent lunatic and his sick ideas about the typical family, the more uneasy she becomes, and with good reason -- she soon has reason to believe that she and her daughter could be his next victims. He is joined in this mission by Amazon queen Ephiny (Danielle Cormack), the centaur Nagus (James Gaylyn), and a youth named Kurth (Jonnno Roberts) -- who has been condemned to death for the murder of Nagus's son. When Autolycus (Bruce Campbell) is captured, Xena (Lucy Lawless) sneaks aboard a prison ship to rescue him. Likewise on the ship is Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), albeit for different reasons. The eruption of Mt. Aetna creates a huge tidal wave, or tsunami, which sweeps everyone overboard. When her comrade in arms Vercinix (Tamati Rice), leader of the Gauls, is captured by Julius Caesar (Karl Urban), Xena (Lucy Lawless) tries to negotiate a trade. If Vercinix is set free, she will release her own captive, Roman aristocrat Crassus (Matthew Chamberlain). In the first episode of a two-part story, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) is guided to Asgard by a disturbing dream. Upon his arrival, Hercules tangles with Norse god Thor (Ben Reed), who at first considers the Greek visitor as his enemy. Ultimately the two immortals combine their powers to prevent the death of Baldur (Rupert Cocks) and thereby avoid the prophecy that Asgard -- and the rest of the world -- will be plunged into Rangnarok (aka "The End of All Things"). Kazankis (Barry Duffield), a Hercules imitator, dies while performing an act of heroism. Establishing a tradition that will be followed in the Modern Age by anti-TV and anti-movie zealots, pompous government prosecutor Spencius (John Sumner) puts Hercules on trial for Kazankis' murder. It is Spencius' argument that Hercules represents a poor role model for the populace and should be held responsible for his imitators' rash acts. But common sense prevails in the climactic scene that should elicit a chuckle from anyone who remembers the 1960 movie epic Spartacus. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Ed" Edwards (Craig McLachlan) has only recently gotten married, when he is drafted in to the army in New Zealand in 1942. He is very much afraid that he will be sent overseas, and that his young wife Daisy (Katrina Hobbs) will be left to fend for herself. At about the same time he finds out that she has suffered a miscarriage, a rumor begins going around that his unit will be shipping out to fight the Japanese. He is desperately worried about his wife, and takes off to see her without getting permission to do so. Technically, he is already a deserter, but some leniency might be extended to him if he is able to return soon. He helps her find a new place to live, and then cannot bring himself to leave her. When the authorities finally catch up with him, he has earned himself a hefty prison sentence and Daisy is indeed left to fend for herself. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Although the ride is bumpy in places, there's an exciting journey offered by John Laing's fast-paced thriller. Three orphans have been best friends since their they were children; now they have decided to end their poverty-stricken existence by murdering an American drug courier in Auckland and then flying to Geneva to withdraw $5 million from his Swiss bank account. Richer but on very dangerous ground, the trio of thieves find themselves on the lead drug dealer's most wanted list. To make matters a bit more complex, one of the grown-up orphans falls in love with the ex-wife of the drug ring's head honcho. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Based on a novel by Sue McCauley, this story of a socially forbidden affair between Liz (Lisa Harrow) a 32-year-old, middle-class woman and Tug (Mark Pilisi) a 16-year-old street kid develops as an intriguing study in breaking through the restrictions that put the brakes on human development. Liz is restive in her role as wife and mother in a socially elite circle of modern Auckland, and Tug -- who lives on the opposite side of the tracks -- is a smart, humorous, impoverished teen beginning to be aware that life has much more to offer than evading the police. Liz leaves her home and family and strikes out to start her own life when she meets Tug. Beyond Reasonable Doubt is a true story of New Zealand justice gone awry. A married couple named Crewe is murdered, and Arthur Allen Thomas (John Hargreaves) is charged with the crime. Given a scrupulously fair trial, the innocent Thomas is found guilty on circumstantial evidence. Later on, it is discovered that zealous police inspector Hutton (David Hemmings), anxious for a conviction, planted false evidence to put the noose around Thomas' neck. Beyond Reasonable Doubt was scripted by David Yallop, whose book on the Crewe case was instrumental in gaining Thomas' release. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
