The story of Andrew Cunanan, the aging gay hustler who killed fashion icon Gianni Versace, comes to the screen in this fact-based drama from director Ben Waller. An emotionally unstable party boy who was growing too old for the nightclub scene, Cunanan (Jonathan Trent) fell into petty theft and drug dealing before embarking on a brutal killing spree that began in late April of 1997. The murders continuing as Cunanan made his way across the country, FBI agent Harry Spalding (James C. Burns) launches a massive manhunt to catch the trigger-happy fugitive. Before the authorities can apprehend Cunanan, however, the young killer turns his rage on one of the biggest names in the fashion industry. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Gang-bangers come up against a new enemy who doesn't recognize any colors other than blood red in this urban horror story. Mac T (Ethan Ednee) is the battle-hardened leader of a street gang in South Central Los Angeles called the Lords of Crenshaw; Mac T and his lieutenants aren't afraid to use violence to get their way, and they've scheduled a meeting with Mitchell (Reggie Bannister), an underground arms merchant, to increase their stockpile of firepower. What the Lords don't know is Mitchell has also scheduled a meeting with another gang at the same time -- El Diablo Muerto, a crew from the East L.A. barrios led by tough-guy Caesar (Noel Gugliemi). When the Lords and the Diablos discover they're both in Mitchell's secret warehouse, it looks as if war s about to break out, until unusual circumstances provide them with a common and deadly enemy. A meteor has crashed near Mitchell's compound that has turned the recent dead into zombies with a taste for human flesh. The two gangs discover they're right in the path of dozens of the hungry undead, along with several innocent bystanders -- an egocentric television weatherman, his wife and a psychotic street preacher -- and they must all join forces to battle the zombies if there's to be any hope of survival. Last Rites was the first full-length feature film from writer, director and visual effects artist Duane Stinnett. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is unexpectedly reunited with Sherry Judd (Donna Bullock), on whom he'd harbored a hopeless crush in his junior high school days. But it's hardly a happy reunion: Someone has murdered Sherry's housekeeper and defaced a valuable painting of her grandmother. As Monk investigates the case on Sherry's behalf, he repeatedly recalls incidents from his troubled childhood, incidents which seem to be paralleled by current events involving Sherry's ex-husband Michael Norfleet (David Hunt)--who of course had been Monk's principal rival for Sherry's affections back in the day. The story reaches its startling climax when a hitherto unsuspected third party--yet another of Sherry's childhood sweethearts--makes himself known. Grant Rosenmeyer is seen as the younger Adrian Monk. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Five Filipino-American friends living in New York City deal with love, sex, friendship, careers, and cultural identity in this romantic comedy-drama directed by veteran Philippine actress Laurice Guillen. Tere Sanchez (Cherry Pie Picache) is an accountant who is in her early forties, single, and not especially happy about it. Tere is an excellent cook, and often throws dinner parties for her friends, and the arrival of her old friend Lorna (Sol Oca) from Manila is all the reason she needs to invite her friends over for a feast. Mike (Christopher De Leon) is a former political journalist who is now enjoying the fruits of a lucrative career as a newspaper editor, but he wonders if he left his principles behind along the way; he's also feeling unfulfilled in his marriage to Gigi (Susan Valdez-LeGoff). Gerry (Ricky Davao) is a advertising copywriter who is afraid to tell his friends and family that he's gay, though circumstances may well drive him out of the closet. Raul (Paolo Montalban) is a good-looking ladies' man who prefers to date Caucasians, and lacks a certain amount of emotional maturity. And Marissa (Dina Bonnevie) is on the surface a well-to-do social butterfly; however, deep inside she's woefully insecure, and is afraid to confront her boyfriend Sam (Randy Becker) about his constant infidelity. Meanwhile, Lorna confesses that while she's married to a wealthy man in Manila, she's terribly unhappy, and is considering staying in America as an illegal alien. American Adobo was the first American-Philippine co-production to open in three major American cities at once (New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco); incidentally, adobo is a spicy chicken or pork dish popular in the Philippines. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

An immigrant trying to make a new life for herself in America discovers her old life is following close behind in this independent drama. Ah Na (Amy Ting) was born and raised in a Chinese village where her desire to challenge the norms led to ugliness and violence, so she decides to emigrate to the United States in hopes of starting over. Ah Na finds a job at Buddha's Happiness, a Chinese restaurant run and staffed by fellow Chinese expatriates, but her tiny shared apartment and long working hours do not afford her much more freedom than she knew in China. One day, Ah Na stumbles upon "the Golden Palace," a section of Grand Central Station where other women from China hang out to talk, share gossip, and try to catch the eye of American men. In time, Ah Na strikes up a relationship with one such man (James Burns) who, unfortunately, turns out to be married; her new relationship is looked upon with scorn by her co-workers, and when Ah Na's mother decides to come to the United States, she must scramble to come up with a likely cover for the lie that she lives in a fine home in the suburbs. Miss Wonton was the debut feature from writer and director Meng Ong; the film was screened in competition at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
