In this family-fun type of film, two brothers who have apparently inherited their recently deceased father's inventor-type genes decide to finish their pop's robot invention, sell it for big bucks, and keep mom out of the poorhouse. They put together the metal man named Newman who somehow has absorbed the dead dad's spirit and can talk. The boys are wowed to find that Dad's back! But then the bad guys arrive (of course) in the form of an electronics company wanting in on the Newman-robot invention and by an abrupt gal reporter who wants the big scoop. Looming out in the troubled fringes too, are the dopes responsible for the kids' dad's demise. These kids are up to all of this and, along with the robot, they're out to rack up one for the 'good guys.' ~ Rovi

The Girl on a Swing, a haunting, mystery thriller with a supernatural twist, is the story of a desperate woman, who will do anything to be with the man she loves. Karin Foster (Meg Tilly), a lonely German secretary, falls in love with and marries Alan (Rupert Frazier) and moves with him to England. There her strange behavior and fears strain the marriage and lead Alan to mistrust his wife and begin to delve into her past. Based on the novel by Richard Adams, the film is not entirely successful due to the leisurely direction of Gordon Hessler and the lack of pace needed to create genuine suspense. But despite this flaw, the sensitive performance of Meg Tilly makes the film well worth watching and is a haunting psychological exploration of obsession, passion and guilt. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

A full 13 years before the first animal was successfully cloned in Scotland (a ewe named Dolly), making headlines around the world, this prescient documentary by director Ove Nyholm examines the DNA molecule in optic splendor, and then launches into a series of interviews with scientists and doctors who discuss the issue of genetic engineering as well as cloning -- including the cloning of a human being. Although proposing a certain neutrality, Nyholm does seem to favor leaving the human race to its own timeless reproduction methods, and to let the geneticists and politicians and lawyers argue over other pressing problems. Since genetic engineering can also be used to prevent diseases, that entire field will be open to argumentation for long decades to come -- making this documentary an important source of information for anyone interested in the topic. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This is a very enjoyable tongue-in-cheek horror film about some homicidal maniacs who break out of an asylum and terrorize a psychiatrist's family on a dark and stormy night. Martin Landau and Jack Palance are particularly funny, but there are some genuine scares as well. One scene, in which a frightened woman is menaced on her bed by a maniac thrusting a butcher-knife up through the mattress, is a clever send-up that will nevertheless linger in the memory. The coda, in which the crazy Palance has a bizarre encounter with a spaced-out punk chick in a nightclub, is a real gem. Recommended. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Future Star Trek: The Next Generation star Brent Spiner probably doesn't include Rent Control on his current resume. Spiner plays a super-neurotic writer who goes to great and absurd lengths to win back his ex-wife. Elizabeth Stack, daughter of Robert, is the lady in question. Rent Control wants to be a Woody Allen movie, but director Gian L. Polidaro is not in the same angst-ridden league as Allen. Filmed in 1981, Rent Control didn't find a distributor until three years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a quasi-documentary about the life of a professional stripper. The stripper (Ilse Damsgaard), her home, life and husband are real. The party she holds in her home in Copenhagen is apparently staged. Sexual situations evolve out of the party scene, as the various couples (Japanese, American, Danish) pretend to be at ease. Of particular interest is the drama of Ilse's husband. A student who feels guilty being supported by her stripping, he leaves her but thinks better of it and returns. Having come back, he then tries to seduce Ilse's unhappy girlfriend. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

A well respected physician is driven to murder when an elderly husband tries to brutally rape his young wife. Using flashbacks, the evil elder is seen walking in the big city to a modern music score and a life that has passed him by. The story is based on the 1905 novel by author Hjalmar Soederberg but is updated to the time of the release of the film in 1968. The doctor willfully commits the murder, knowing that a third party and not himself will ultimately benefit from the old man's death. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi
