Yiddish Theater favorite Moishe Oysher heads the cast of the English-language Singing in the Dark. Oysher plays Leo, a concentration-camp survivor suffering from amnesia. He manages to ayed by Evelyne Cormand (acting) and Annie Feibermeyer (singing), and so forth. Because director H. W. Kolm-Vetee can't seem to make up his mind what approach to take with the material at hand, the audience is likewise confused. The English subtitles for Don Juan were written by film historian and essayist Herman G. This earnest drama warns teenagers of the dangers of having premarital sex by telling the story of a teenage girl who goes "all the way" after her graduation celebration and ends up pregnant. She is terrified to tell her mother. Her boyfriend wants to do the right thing and marry her, but he is unfortunately killed in an auto accident. The poor girl feels she has no choice but to get a back alley abortion and this leads to a terrible tragedy. The story is told by her physician. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

A safecracker risks his own life to save an endangered child from an oncoming truck and finds his life changes forever in this drama. During the rapid rescue, the crook breaks his leg and while he heals, he is befriended by a good-hearted priest who guides him toward the straight and narrow. In this wartime drama, an ex-gangster proves himself a decent man when he helps defeat the Nazis while he is hiding out on a tiny island. At first the gangster looks as if he has joined the German soldiers by providing them with a location for refueling their U-boats. Later an American ship is sunk off shore. Among the survivors is a merchant marine who was formerly a New York City cop. The cop instantly recognizes the fugitive mobster and the situation soon becomes tense. In this action film, an officer is thrown off the force by his father the chief of police. The bitter ex-cop then joins a racketeering operation. The ring leader assigns him to drive a truck-load of armed hoods to ambush his father. Unbeknownst to the crooks, the ex-cop is still active on the force. The whole affair was a ruse to capture them. In this crime drama, a policeman marries a nightclub hostess. Together, they move into a cramped, ramshackle apartment. There the woman begins feeling suffocated and decides to return to her old life. She also takes up with a gangster. Soon she is entangled in a murder and this forces her lover to look for a way to get rid of her. Fortunately, her husband rescues her before it's too late. Audrey Scott (Shirley Palmer) is a fun-loving but basically proper college coed, who manages to escape the clutches of one over-eager freshman on a date, only to cross paths with Earl Hastings (Raymond McKee), another young woman-chaser on campus. She vows never to look at another man, except to get even with young Hastings; meanwhile, she's also studying with Professor Ezra Hastings (Raymond McKee), Earl's staid and very proper (as well as very eccentric) twin brother. And as the fact that they look alike causes no end of havoc to each man, as well as those pursuing Earl and respecting Ezra, especially when Audrey decides to get even with the man who humiliated her by switching the numbers on his assigned room. Helene Chadwick stars as Fay Leslie, a slightly blowzy but basically good-hearted chorus girl. When Fay falls in love with wealthy Donald Hampton (Kenneth Harlan), the boy's parents disinherit him. Even so, Fay and Donald are married, a union that quickly goes sour when it appears that Fay has been cheating on her spouse. It isn't true, of course, but to prove her innocence, Fay must turn the tables on her would-be seducer -- ending up with his disgrace. At last convinced that their daughter-in-law is worthy, Hampton's parents welcome Fay with open arms. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Aspiring playwright Lila Lake (Alice Day), gypped by a phony theatrical agency, finds herself stranded in New York. Meanwhile, the mother (Ethel Clayton) of wealthy Jimmy Duval (Charles Cruze) tries to save her son from the clutches of a predatory female. Thanks to clever lawyer Philip Thorne (Theodore von Eltz), the lives of Lila and Jimmy converge. The title makes no more sense than the plot, since the "New York Wife" -- who briefly hires Lila as a personal secretary -- is but a minor character. Critics were amused by the unbelievable behavior of the characters, especially a pair of funny-paper private detectives. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Gawky American teenager Daphne Carroll (Edith Roberts) is shipped off to an expensive education in Paris. By the time she returns, Daphne has metamorphosed into a sleek, poised fashion plate. She has also picked up a few "radical" notions about love and fidelity, which embarrass her hometown sweetheart, politician Curtis Lee (Harland Tucker). Worried that Daphne might hurt his chances at re-election, Curtis begins neglecting her. She gets even by crashing one of Curtis' dinner parties, posing as escaped lunatic Sally Long (Louise Carver). Worried about Daphne's bizarre behavior, Curtis puts her under the care of a nurse -- who turns out to be the real Sally Long. Rescued from a grisly fate, Daphne promises to behave more conservatively in the future -- but one detects a gleam in her pretty blue eyes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This melodrama, with all its standard trappings, was adapted the stage play by Pierce Kingsley, which in turn was based on Grace Miller's novel. Bessie Love stars as orphaned country girl Anna Moore, who, along with her brother, Tommy (Frankie Lee), is being raised by hypocritical Squire Simpson (Tully Marshall). Anna is due to come into an inheritance, and Simpson and his son plot to get their hands on the money. Anna falls in love with Bob Crandall, a visitor from the city (William Scott), and they plan to marry. But the ceremony is interrupted by the appearance of a woman (Barbara Tennant) with a baby, who accuses Crandall of betraying her. Anna returns home, brokenhearted and ready to marry Simpson's son. But the Squire overplays his hand by insisting that Crandall be run out of town. This sets into motion a series of events that wind up proving his innocence. The woman confesses that it is the Squire's son, not Crandall, who is the baby's father, and Crandall and Anna are finally united. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide

Madge Joy (Viola Dana) is an actress with a cheap theatrical troupe, but she loses her job when a stage-struck young girl with a lot of money (Priscilla Bonner) wants to take her place. Madge misses the last train out of Buckeye Junction and falls asleep in a haystack. The next morning she is found by Robert Deep (Tom Gallery), who takes her home to the family farm. His mother (Josephine Crowell) likes her immediately. However, because Madge senses that his stern, religious father (Nelson McDowell) would not approve of her profession, she claims to be a runaway orphan. The only one she is honest with is Robert, who confesses that he has written a 17-act play. Unfortunately, it's very bad. The Deeps' daughter, Susan, arrives home and it turns out that she is the same girl who took Madge's place. Pa Deep is enraged that Susan ran off to become an actress. Madge comes to her aid by saying that she is an actress herself, and will run off with Robert unless Pa Deep makes up with his daughter. Pa agrees, and Madge takes off -- alone -- for Broadway where she becomes a star. One day Robert shows up with yet another play. Whether it is better than the last one is a moot point, since his main interest is really Madge. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
