Whirlwind Raiders differs from the usual run of Charles Starrett westerns only in the fact that it wasn't directed by the series' principal helmsman Ray Nazarro. Starrett is cast as ace rodeo rider Steve Lanning, who, when the need presents itself, assumes the guise of that masked justice-defender, The Durango Kid. The villains this time are s ia band of Texas law officers who use their authority to rob and plunder. When Steve figures out who's the "head man" behind the crooks, he dons his Durango mask and metes out justice. Featured in the cast is 10-year-old Don Kay Reynolds, aka Little Brown Jug, who was concurrently playing "Little Beaver" in the Red Ryder western series. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Columbia Pictures once again trotted out the old tale of rival stage lines competing for the valuable government mail contract in this routine entry in the long-running Durango Kid series. This time, the Halliday stage line of Quanto Basin is all but forced out of business when old man Halliday (Nolan Leary) finds himself falsely accused of killing Dan Waring (Steve Clark), the manager of the competing Brent line. In reality, Brent (Alan Bridge) has been sabotaging Halliday's efforts to win the contract by having Jim McMasters (Mauritz Hugo) and his hired gunmen perform one hold-up after another. Vociferously disagreeing with these methods, Waring was shot by McMasters, who then framed Halliday. Enter Waring's nephew Jeff (Charles Starrett) and his young friend Tex Harding, who quickly side with Halliday's daughter Mary (Carole Mathews) and the only driver left in the company, Cannonball (Dub Taylor). Donning the disguise of noted avenger The Durango Kid, Jeff gets the goods on Brent, who subsequently loses the deciding stagecoach race for the contract. This mild musical western was the first starring vehicle for former Sons of the Pioneers member Ken Curtis. The Hoosier Hot Shots, of National Barn Dance fame, co-starred as themselves, a radio country band who buys shares in a dilapidated Western hotel. Arriving in Arizona, the band members discover that the hotel is haunted and that it properly belongs to young Jimmy Benson (Curtis), the nephew of the previous owner. The "ghosts," however, turns out to be a trio of confidence men, Zeke Winslow (Guinn "Big Boy" Williams), Noah Jones (Raymond Hatton) and Slim Jensen Victor Potel, who are hoping to buy the place themselves. Jimmy, who owes $500 in back taxes, befriends the Hot Shots, who plan to turn the hotel into a radio ranch. Together with the band's pretty manager, Mary Parker (Cheryl Walker), Jimmy and the Hot Shots, who have discovered a hidden treasure along the way, convince the crooks to turn legit and give up their plan to scare the hotel's future guests. The Utah Kid was a late entry in Monogram's "Trail Blazers" series. These low-budget westerns usually featured three cowboy stars; this time, however, there are only two, Bob Steele and Hoot Gibson. Though neither star is a spring chicken, Steele is the younger of the two, so he's the "Utah Kid" by default. The plot, involving a gang of crooks who go around fixing rodeo results, was designed to accommodate yards and yards of stock footage. Onetime D.W. When cowboy star Johnny Mack Brown left Universal for Monogram, he also left one last western, Arizona Trail, unfilmed. Thus it was that veteran sagebrusher Tex Ritter, originally cast in a secondary role, was promoted to the lead-his first such at a major studio in several years. Ritter and Dennis Moore play the sons of Erville Anderson, who is slickered out of his land by villainous Jack Ingram. Janet Shaw, who elsewhere on the Universal lot was playing the slatternly waitress in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt, is seen as Ritter's leading lady. Upon first hearing these words, Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney) dismisses them as childish folderol. After all, this is the 20th Century; how can a human being turn into a werewolf? Talbot soon learns how when he attempts to rescue Jenny Williams (Fay Helm) from a nocturnal attack by a wolf. Collapsing, Talbot discovers upon reviving that Jenny is dead-and, lying by her side, is not the body of a beast, but of a gypsy named Bela (Bela Lugosi). The son of fortune teller Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya), Bela was a lycanthrope, or "wolf man." And now that he has been bitten by Bela, Talbot is cursed to suffer the torments of the damned whenever the moon is full. Arguably the best of the "original" Universal horrors (original in the sense that it was not based on an existing literary property, a la Frankenstein, Dracula and The Invisible Man), The Wolf Man boasts one of the most stellar casts ever to grace a "B" picture: Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Ralph Bellamy, Warren William, Patric Knowles, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi. The man-to-wolf transformation sequences -- one of which took a full 24 hours to film -- are thoroughly convincing, thanks to the cosmetic genius of Jack P. Pierce (Chaney had wanted to emulate his father by developing his own werewolf makeup, but existing union rules would not permit this). Alas, after this powerhouse opening volley, the Wolf Man character was relegated to a series of cheap sequels, teaming him with other Universal shock stars: Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943), House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945). The final ignominy was Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1945), in which Lawrence Talbot (Chaney again), having been cured of lycanthropy in House of Dracula, reverts to his werewolf status -- and has to endure the one-liners of Lou Costello to boot! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In his starring film for Universal Pictures, W.C. Fields plays circus manager and all-around flim flam man Larson E. Whipsnade. When he's not trying to fleece the customers or elude the sheriff, Whipsnade busys himself trying to break up the romance between his daughter Vicky (Constance Moore) and carnival ventriloquist Edgar Bergen (playing himself). He also carries on a running feud with Bergen's nattily attired dummy Charlie McCarthy ("I'll slash you into venetian blinds!"). Bergen's other dummy is Mortimer Snerd, who occasionally comments upon the action in his own thickheaded fashion. Anxious to arrange a marriage between Vicki and the wealthy Roger Bel-Goodie III (James Bush), Whipsnade disposes of Bergen and his dummies by sending them aloft in a hot-air baloon. Attending a party at the Bel-Goodie mansion, Whipsnade makes a pest of himself by constantly referring to snakes, a subject that invariably causes Mrs. Bel-Goodie (Mary Forbes) to swoon. He also engages in a zany ping-pong tournament with socialite Ronnie (Ivan Lebedeff). But it is Vicki, and not Whipsnade, who breaks up the engagement by telling off her pompous fiance. At that very instant, Bergen, having escaped from the balloon, arrives to claim Vicki and to help Whipsnade escape the sheriff once more. A partial remake of the W.C. Fields silent Two Flaming Youths, You Can't Cheat an Honest Man was scripted by Fields under the pseudonym "Charles Bogle." As published in the 1973 compendium W.C. Fields by Himself, the original screenplay was to have had dramatic overtones, including the death of Fields' trapeze-artist wife and a climactic soul-baring scene wherein Fields expresses his genuine love for his daughter. All this was jettisoned when it was decided to capitalize on the Fields-Charlie McCarthy "feud" then blazing on radio's Chase and Sanborn Show. While nowhere near as funny as Fields' subsequent Universal feature The Bank Dick, You Can't Cheat an Honest Man still contains a generous supply of laughs. Harrison Ford (the original silent era Harrison Ford) and 1924 WAMPAS Baby Star Alberta Vaughn starred in this comedy-thriller from low-budget Mayfair Pictures Corp. When fussy Ronald Courtney (Tyrell Davis) spots his fiancée, Betty (Vaughn), winking at Donald Ransome (Ford) at a friend's wedding, he demands that they get married that very night. While dumb detective Duffy (Fred Kelsey) is chatting up Marie, the French maid, someone steals a valuable diamond. Duffy demands the gates locked, but Ronald manages to get out. The thief, Donald, manages to smuggle the gem out in a suitcase belonging to Betty, who then heads upstate for her wedding to Ronald. Everybody, including Ronald's weird relatives (Ethel Wales and Arthur Hoyt), ends up at the Peak Inn, where a game of "who's got the diamond" begins. After plenty of traffic up and down stairscases and in and out of closets, Donald, who was only returning the diamond to a friend, is reunited with his highborn girlfriend (Nanette Vallon), while Ronald and Betty are finally able to get on with their nuptials. ~ Hans J. Contrary to popular belief, Clara Bow was already Paramount's biggest box-office draw when she starred in this delightful rags-to-riches comedy. But It, from the fertile mind of bizarre best-selling author Elinor Glyn, remains perhaps the quintessential Bow picture. Not that the story of a poor shopgirl falling for her rich employer was anything new (by 1927, Bow could play that role in her sleep), but It came complete with one of the best publicity campaigns in Hollywood history. Glyn herself publicly pointed to Bow as the personification of It, "that quality possessed by some which draws all others with its magnetic force." Paramount made sure that Glyn's lofty description of the word sunk in and even convinced the author to explain It in the film to leading man Antonio Moreno (who, according to Glyn, simply oozed It as well). The lightweight comedy behind all this hoopla centered on little Betty Lou Spence, a vivacious salesgirl invited to dinner at the Ritz by foppish wastrel and self-described "old fruit" "Monty" Montgomery (William Austin in one of those roles later personified by Edward Everett Horton). Betty is not paying attention to her dinner companion, however, but is ogling department store heir Cyrus Waltham (Moreno). He notices her too, and takes the salesgirl on a whirlwind tour of Coney Island. But when Betty is mistakenly assumed to be the unmarried mother of an infant (actually her roommate Molly's), stern Cyrus no longer sees her as proper marriage material. Betty, of course, gets her man in the end and Waltham's snooty girlfriend ("other woman" specialist Jacqueline Gadsden) ends up in the drink. Delivering all the vivacious punch expected of a Bow comedy, It takes time out for a couple of rather poignant scenes. With the hindsight that Brooklyn's own Bow was never fully accepted by Hollywood society despite her stardom, it is touching to watch Betty being ostracized at the snobbish Ritz; and Bow is never more affecting than when she realizes that Moreno is offering diamonds and pearls instead of marriage. Priscilla Bonner, as Bow's drab, single-mother roommate, adds a touch of realism to her brief role, enviously observing Betty's frivolity. If It only added to Bow's brilliant success, the film did little for the intelligent Bonner. To the end of her life, Bonner maintained that accepting featured billing in It lost her any chance of true stardom. A very young Gary Cooper, has a bit as a reporter and director Josef Von Sternberg reputedly took over for Clarence Badger during a brief illness. Despite its rather trite Cinderella plot, It magnificently demonstrates why Bow's guileless flapper came to define an entire decade. It is heartbreaking to realize that her decline had already set in, and Bow's very public troubles and eventual career destruction were lurking right around the corner! ~ Hans J.
