The comedy team that made the phrase "nyuk nyuk nyuk" part of the American vocabulary gets the full biographical treatment in this made-for-TV feature. The Three Stooges opens in 1959, as a TV executive tries to persuade Moe Howard (Paul Ben-Victor) to reunite with his former onscreen partners to publicize the television premiere of a package of Three Stooges classic comedy shorts. Howard then flashes back on his long and remarkable career, as vaudeville star Ted Healy (Marton Csokas) assembles Moe Howard, sibling Shemp Howard (John Kassir), and Larry Fine (Evan Handler) as "stooges" for his stage act. As Moe, Shemp, and Larry gain popularity, a jealous Healy forces them to strike out on their own, but after many grueling years on the road, Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn (Linal Haft) offers them a chance to star in their own series of two-reel comedies. But Shemp, always stage-shy, backs out of the group, and his brother Jerome (Michael Chiklis) -- aka "Curly" -- takes over, and the Three Stooges become a sensation. However, success proves to be a bumpy road for the group, as a bad deal with Columbia prevents them from reaping the full benefits of their success, and a serious illness forces Curly to quit, bringing Shemp back into the act. Mel Gibson was an executive producer for this biopic, which first aired on ABC on April 24, 2000. Incidentally, this wasn't Michael Chiklis' first time playing an icon of American comedy; he portrayed John Belushi in the 1989 drama Wired. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In the tradition of Arsenic and Old Lace, comes this morbidly funny Australian tale of murder and mayhem at the hands of two charming old ladies. The two impoverished widows, Flo and Minnie lead quiet lives in their ramshackle apartment above an antique shop. They augment their meager income by shoplifting food and stealing small electrical appliances. So far they have not been caught, but to find a steadier source of income, they decide to let out a spare room. Two men show up to apply for the space; one is fugitive-criminal, Grubb, and the other is Instep, a police officer nearing retirement. The ladies scramble to keep Grubb and Instep apart for they fear that the criminal will tell the cop about their own crimes. Unfortunately, the cop adjusts the gas heater in the room and accidentally kills Grubb. Flo and Minnie decide to dispose of Grubb by chopping him up and storing his remains in their refrigerator. Later, Instep, who is in love with Minnie, decides to impress her by extracting a roast from the fridge and preparing it for Sunday dinner. Later they end up cooking the rest of the late Grubb and feeding him to their chickens, which miraculously begin laying remarkable eggs and breeding rapidly. The birds' droppings prove to be exceptional fertilizer for the ladies' mushrooms. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A man from the future fights to survive in a society thrown back to the dark ages in this sci-fi adventure set in 2022. Capt. Robbins (Ray Liotta) is a military man who, after he's convicted of the murder of his superior officer, is sentenced to a high-tech prison ruled by the Warden (Michael Lerner), a cruel taskmaster who enjoys torturing his inmates. After a scuffle with the Warden, Robbins is transferred to a primitive island penal colony known as Absalom, where the civilization is dominated by two groups, the Insiders, a peaceful tribe led by the Father (Lance Henriksen), and the Outsiders, a pack of violent misfits led by Marek (Stuart Wilson). Robbins runs afoul of the Outsiders and is injured in a skirmish; he escapes to the Insiders' camp, where he plots his revenge. No Escape was based on the novel The Penal Colony by Richard Herley. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A Lebanese gunrunner is murdered, and the most likely suspect is Ian O'Connell (Anthony Heald), an Irish Republican Army terrorist. This poses a dilemma for detective Logan (Chris Noth), who wonders if his own pro-Irish sentiments may prevent him from conducting an impartial investigation. Originally scheduled to air on January 22, 1991, this episode of Law & Order was bumped forward to March 26 of that year (curiously, only nine days after St. Patrick's Day). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In a muddled story that seems to have a few missing pieces floating about, Niel (Paul Williams) protests the Vietnam War as a student at the university, as does his girlfriend Patricia (Judy Morris). The war itself separates both of them for an indeterminate period of time -- he inexplicably volunteers to go fight in 'Nam and is wounded, while she volunteers for the Viet Cong and is thrown in jail back home for that activity. Later, both end up married and living a comfortable life in Melbourne. Two of their seriously screwed-up friends have their own traumas to handle or mishandle, and no one seems to get along very well as a consequence. The plot holes in the story are a challenge to try and fill, even with the best imagination.

In The Odd Angry Shot director Tom Jeffrey provides a cathartic Australian answer to Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter. Australia's participation in the Vietnam War was as much of an alienating and soul-searching experience for Australians as for Americans, and Jeffrey's frank portrayal of a group of Australian volunteers casts the war in a different light from the perspective of a Cimino or Oliver Stone. The story concerns a corp of Australian elite soldiers -- the Special Air Service troops (the equivalent of the United States' Special Forces group) -- and the elite group's more pragmatic and hopeful attitudes -- whiling away the time in mindless diversions and cracking jokes. Then one of their own is killed and their feelings about the war suddenly change. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
