Throughout his long career, internationally acclaimed music superstar Michael Jacksonsporadically made film appearances as an actor, notably in his first starring role in The Wiz (1978), but he was best known for producing cutting-edge feature-film quality music videos such as "Thriller," "Billie Jean," and "Black or White." He also produced films for Disney virtual rides, the first of which was the extremely popular Francis Ford Coppola-directed Captain Eo (1985), which ran at Disney World in Orlando until 1997. Jackson also occasionally composed music and songs for movie soundtracks. He died of cardiac arrest in 2009, a couple of months before his 51st birthday. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this frantic satiric comedy, Maximus Powers (Eric Roberts) and Mike Saunders (Charlie Schlatter) are a pair of airline pilots who are flying a chartered jet to Japan, booked for the contestants in the Miss Galaxy Beauty Pageant. Bad luck is following them and the pilots crash-land on a deserted island, where they struggle to find a way to ferry themselves and the glamour girls back to civilization. However, things on the island are hardly as quiet as they might imagine, as they soon discover its home to a gigantic half-pig, half-dinosaur; a tribe of intelligent ape people; and the remnants of Noah's Ark. As Powers and Saunders plot their next moves, they are recruited for an unusual mission by Special Agent MJ (Michael Jackson), who appears as a giant light in the sky. By the way, that really is Michael Jackson the pop singer appearing in a cameo role; other guest stars include Stuart Pankin, Evan Marriott, and Colleen Shannon. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Thirteen-year-old Jenna (Shana Dowdeswell) has had enough with the trials of adolescence. In addition to being saddled with a devoted-but-nerdy best friend, Matt (Sean Marquette), she falls victim to one of the dangers of playing Seven Minutes in Heaven with the coolest kids in school: being stranded without a willing make-out partner. Humiliated, Jenna buries herself in the aformentioned make-out closet, wishing she could skip the whole adolescence bit and move straight into adulthood, and miraculously wakes just weeks away from her 30th birthday. Of course, a lot has changed since going to bed the night before, not the least of which being an impressive set of womanly curves. The new, older Jenna (Jennifer Garner) is a successful magazine editor with friends in high places and a lion's share of potential suitors -- including a hockey-playing boyfriend and a swarthy married man. The problem is that her mind hasn't matured with her body; Jenna not only finds living on her own more terrifying than cool, but is quick to dismiss any male over the age of 14 as "gross." Half excited, half mortified, Jenna seeks out Matt (Mark Ruffalo), whom she learns she had spurned as a teenager in an effort to join the popular crowd. Gary Winick directed, from a script by Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa; Gina Matthews produced. Choreographer Michael Peters - who died in 1994 - received posthumous credit, as his choreography from the Michael Jackson Thriller video is used in one scene. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Otherworldly villains are on the loose again, and it's up to Earth's interstellar police force to bring them to justice in this sequel to the sci-fi comedy blockbuster Men in Black. Agent Jay (Will Smith) has become a high-ranking member of the Men in Black, the secret government task force designed to deal with unruly visitors from other worlds, while his former cohort, Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), had his memory wiped clean and now lives a simple but contented life as a mailman. However, an especially nasty alien threat has reared its not-so-ugly head; Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle) is a shape-shifting Kylothian alien who is in pursuit of another escaped visitor who holds the key to powers that would allow her to destroy the world. Making Serleena all the more dangerous is the fact she's taken on the appearance of a lingerie model, making her irresistible to most men. When the rampaging Serleena takes control of the MIB offices, Jay is forced to turn to the only man who can help him save the world -- the former Agent Kay. After restoring Kay's memory, the two remaining Men in Black set out to conquer Serleena with a motley band of friendly aliens, including a handful of worm creatures and a talking dog named Frank (voice of Tim Blaney). Jay, meanwhile, has his head turned by Laura (Rosario Dawson), an attractive waitress who was an unwitting witness to an alien attack. Men in Black 2 also features Rip Torn, Tony Shalhoub, David Cross, Patrick Warburton, and Johnny Knoxville. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This short film is actually a long-form music video, produced to promote Michael Jackson's 1997 album Blood on the Dance Floor, and it features two songs from that release. The obese and overbearing mayor of a small town, like most of his constituents, lives in fear of the "ghosts" that inhabit a haunted house near the city limits. One day, the mayor and an angry mob storm the house to demand that the "Maestro" and his ghouls who live in the mansion leave the village. However, once they get to know the Maestro, they discover that he's not such a bad guy after all. Most of the principle characters (including the mayor and the Maestro) are played by Michael Jackson, thanks to the make-up and special effects wizardry of Stan Winston, who served as director for the project. Stephen King co-wrote the story. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This video series profiles success stories of rock and roll artists who have risen from obscurity to popular acclaim. This segment features the work of such pop artists as Madonna, Michael Jackson, N.W.A., and Run-DMC. There is a look at the phenomenal career of Madonna. Her business savy and shrewd assessment of America's sexual mores have made her fabulously wealthy. Poking fun at the vestiges of Puritanic culture in America by singing suggestive lyrics and wearing outlandishly provocative clothes, she has won the admiration of some, the ire of others. Her iconoclastic attitude towards sexual repression has turned her into an icon herself. Michael Jackson, too, is portrayed in the film as a visionary, as well as a great entertainer. His androgynous appearance and forays into the outer limits of plastic surgery tell volumes about American culture and its future. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide

The extraordinary life of Quincy Jones -- one of the 20th century's most influential and talented composers, musicians and music producers -- provides the basis of this offbeat, free-form documentary tribute. With little regard for formal timelines and traditional documentary biography methods, the film is an amazing patchwork of personal insights featuring a constellation of music stars including his long-time friend Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie and rappers Big Daddy Kane and Flavor Flav, as well as politicians, filmmakers and other important people. Some of the most moving scenes involve Jones returning to his childhood home in Chicago and recounting honest and painful memories from his childhood. Jones does not shy from discussing everything -- from his mother's mental illness, to his marital problems, to his serious health conditions. He also looks frankly at his career. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The title of this British series was something of a pun. The program was indeed "on two" (BBC2, that is), and each ten-minute episode featured one single solitary comedian, delivering a monologue written specially for the occasion. The five episodes included "The Man I Was" with Chris Lyman, "Dead Good Friends" with Jo Brand, "Nice Lives" with Andrew Bailey, "Dirty Weekend" with Caroline Quentin, and "Optical Allusions" with John Hegley. One on Two originally aired from June 18 to July 3, 1990. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

On January 28, 1985, as famine devastated the African continent, a stellar roster of musical talent entered a recording studio in Los Angeles, CA, to make a record dedicated to alleviating hunger in the Third World. The song was called "We Are the World," the collected artists billed themselves as "USA for Africa," and the single became a phenomenon, raising over $60 million for African famine relief. We Are the World: The Story Behind the Song is a documentary which examines how the song was written, how producer Quincy Jones and songwriters Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie persuaded some of the most popular performers in America to donate their services to the project, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the marathon recording session that produced the single. Performers include Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, and many more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Many critics feel that most megabudget films seem designed as a potential theme-park ride first and an actual motion-picture second; Captain Eo, however, was designed as a Disney theme-park attraction from the very beginning. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Michael Jackson, the 17-minute short ran for over 10 years in Disneyland's Magic Eye Theatre, finally closing in April of 1997. (It has also appeared at Disneyworld and other Disney theme parks). The plot follows a motley crew of space travelers -- led by Jackson as Captain Eo -- who are captured by the oppressive leaders of a remote planet and sentenced to a century of torture. Captain Eo responds with a demonstration of the power of rock music, staging an impromptu concert that revitalizes the barren planet and transforms the evil aliens into beautiful, peace-loving humanoids. The simplistic plot, designed for an audience made up primarily of children, is purposefully secondary to Jackson's musical performances and the visual effects, which are presented in 70 millimeter 3-D. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
