A former Special Forces sergeant infiltrates the most dangerous underground fight club in the country to seek revenge for his brother, who was left comatose after being forced to fight to repay a gambling debt. Jack Campbell (Max Martini) served his country well, but his military career ended in shame; after receiving commendations for bravery in Kosovo and Tora Bora, and being bestowed a Bronze Star for bravery in Afghanistan, Jack's attempt to save civilian lives in Iraq by attacking a sadistic commanding officer earned him a dishonorable discharge and a prison stint at Fort Leavenworth. Granted early release, Jack makes his way to San Madera, CA to pay a visit to his only brother, Joey. But Joey is in a coma, an unfortunate victim of the Gauntlet, a notorious underground fight club run by morally bankrupt businessman Mr. Pope (Nick Chinlund). Mr. Pope and his greedy wife Ms. Lee (Jane Park Smith) have made San Madera their own personal playground, a place where the wealthy and greedy can go to see some serious bloodshed. On his way to challenging reigning fight king Isaiah (Sidney Liufau), Jack enlists quirky strip club owner George (Max Perlich) as his manager, and reconnects with his old high school friend Maggie (Valerie Cruz). Though at first Pope sees the story of a violent war vet fighting for the honor of his fallen brother as a perfect pitch to sell tickets, his tune changes after realizing that the fight is personal, and Jack aims to destroy his entire empire before the fighting is over. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Where else but Minnesota, a state that has brought us creative minds as diverse as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Garrison Keillor and Paul Westerberg, could a man like Jesse "The Body" Ventura be elected governor? The Jesse Ventura Story follows the inarguably remarkable career of its title character (played by Nils Allen Stewart) as he overcomes an unhappy childhood and strained relationship with his father to find success as a Navy SEAL, a bouncer, a bodyguard, a disc jockey, a professional wrestler and a second-string action movie star, concluding with his most remarkable feat to date: winning Minnesota's 1998 gubernatorial race as a third-party candidate. Produced for NBC television, The Jesse Ventura Story was a model of production efficiency; it was first aired in May 1999, a mere six months after the real life Ventura won the Minnesota election, with Toronto standing in for the Twin Cities. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

One of the most heavily promoted TV movies of the 1997-98 season, The Lake is a complex sci-fi/fantasy yarn with echoes of such past genre classics as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Stepford Wives. Former Baywatch babe Yasmine Bleeth heads the huge cast as Jackie Ivers, a professional nurse who returns to her small California home town to care for her dying father. Upon her arrival, Jackie quickly ascertains that something is not quite right about the community and the people with whom she grew up. Put bluntly, every person in town is behaving in the exact opposite manner of what might normally be expected--and this bizarre mass character conversion has spread to Jackie's own family. Ultimately, the solution to the mystery manifested a polluted lake and an alternate earth, though the conclusion of the story provides a twist calculated to confound those who think they have everything figured out by the film's midway point. The best moments go to Marion Ross in what amounts to a dual role, and to Haley Joel Osment of Sixth Sense fame. The Lake made its NBC network bow on February 1, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The bombs are placed on two trains, which are then engaged in a breakneck race by the general via remote control. Things really get dangerous when one of the trains is hijacked! Alexandra Paul and Patrick Stewart also star in this middling actioner, which manages to stir up suspense only during the climactic detonation sequence.
