A father is reunited with the son he never knew he had and finds out just how much separates them in this independent drama. Remigio (Miguel Gutierrez) was born and raised in Cuba, but he grew tired of the restrictions of life under Castro, and in time he fled to the United States. Remigio has become a success in America as the host of a top-rated radio talk show in Miami, but one day he's faced with an unexpected reminder of his past -- Ivan (Adrian Mas), a handsome and strapping young man who Remigio fathered before leaving Cuba. Ivan escaped Cuba on a raft and has made his way to Miami, where he hopes his long-lost father can help him start a new life just as Remigio did years before. Remigio is happy to give Ivan a boost, taking him into his home and helping him find a job, and the young man is grateful to be with the man he only knew as a voice on the radio while growing up. Ivan is enchanted with the excitement and opportunities of life in Miami at first, but Remigio soon notices his son indulges in petty crime and is making friends with members of a gang of drug dealers, and he begins to wonder just what led Ivan to leave his home and come to a new and different land. Paraiso was written and directed by veteran Cuban-American filmmaker Leon Ichaso, and was produced as an independent project, shooting on location in Miami and show using a small local crew. The picture received its world premiere at the 2009 Miami International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Ray (James LeGros) has to defend Darwyn (Michael Ealy) and explain the shooting of Bobby Habib to his bosses, who are considering ending the operation and making an arrest immediately. Darwyn apologizes to Gayle (Melissa Sagemiller) for standing her up, but he is forced to continue to lie to her. Farik (Oded Fehr) tells the cell that their funding in Mexico has hit a snag, and because Darwyn and Christian (Alex Nesic) speak Spanish, he takes them down there with him to straighten things out. Farik has to deal with a drug dealer/gun runner/pimp named Felix (Eduardo Yáñez) who wants a much bigger cut of the profits, and knows exactly what Farik is using the money for. Darwyn is appalled to learn that Felix is kidnapping underage children to sell to depraved tourists, and demands that Farik put a stop to it. On returning to the U.S., Darwyn is intercepted by Ray, who tells him that the operation was going to be shut down until the bureau discovered the existence of two more potential cells in Washington and New York. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Miguel Pinero became a leading figure in New York's art scene during the 1970s as a poet, actor, and playwright whose vibrant, often pointed, work spoke directly to the lower classes and to disenfranchised minorities. As a founder of the influential Nuyorican Poets Cafe, his poetry soon became recognized as a forerunner to rap and hip-hop music. TV screenwriter turned director Leon Ichaso spins this impressionistic biographical look at this artist. Raised in an abusive family, Pinero (Benjamin Bratt) turns to streets for solace. Soon he is engaging in petty crime, drug dealing, and addiction. When he finds himself in Sing-Sing, he turns his experiences in prison into the play Short Eyes, which eventually garners him seven Tony awards in 1974. Uncomfortable with his new fame, he clings to his girlfriend, Sugar (Talisa Soto), and his childhood buddy, Miguel Algarin (Giancarlo Esposito), who is a literature professor and who co-founded the Nuyorican Cafe. Though Pinero makes cameos on such shows as Kojak, his art begins to suffer as he starts to succumb to his drug addictions. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Jimi Hendrix was perhaps the single most groundbreaking guitarist in the history of rock & roll; utilizing feedback, distortion, and effects pedals as integral parts of his sound and not simply as punctuation, Hendrix created a radically new aesthetic for the electric guitar, which combined with his superlative songwriting abilities and remarkable gift to bring out the most in other musicians helped to make him one of the most important figures in '60s rock, until his death in the fall of 1970s as a result of a drug overdose. This made-for-TV biography (originally shown on the Showtime premium cable network) stars Wood Harris as the legendary guitarist, and examines his life and career, both on and off the stage. Hendrix also stars Vivica A. Fox and Dorian Harewood; the filmmakers were unfortunately unable to obtain permission to use Hendrix's own songs in the film, so his onscreen performances are of covers Jimi recorded during his career. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Based on a true story, this crime drama is adapted from Emily Mann's play about the murder of Harvey Milk (Peter Coyote), the first openly gay City Supervisor in San Francisco, who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone (Stephen Young) in 1978. While city employee Dan White (Timothy Daly) was found guilty of the crime, the charge was reduced from murder in the first degree to voluntary manslaughter when his lawyers claimed that White became emotionally unstable after eating too much junk food; this controversial and much-derided legal tactic became known as the "Twinkie Defense." White served five years in prison for the double murder before committing suicide in 1985. Execution of Justice was produced for the Showtime premium cable network. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Gustavo (Rene Lavan) is an engineering student born and raised in Cuba who strongly believes in his nation's socialist ideals at a time when those ideals are crumbling around him. His girlfriend, Yolanda (Mayte Vilan), dreams of emigrating to Miami and making a life for herself as a professional dancer. His father, Tomas (Miguel Gutierrez), is a respected psychiatrist who he can barely support himself working at a state-run institution; he moonlights as a jazz pianist, where he makes four times his medical salary playing for tips to tourists at a nightclub. And his brother Bobby (Larry Villanueva) is a rock musician whose long hair and defiant posture have made him an enemy of the state and an outspoken opponent of Castro's regime; when yet another of his performances is shut down and his equipment is confiscated by police, Bobby, in an extreme act of protest, publicly injects himself with HIV-tainted blood, making clear that when presented with the slogan of "socialism or death," he would prefer the latter. Azucar Amarga was a highly personal project for director Leon Ichaso, a emigre from Havana who has offered one of the few portraits of Cuban unrest in the 1990s from a Cuban point-of-view. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this tough but literate urban drama (based on a play by Charles Fuller), Zooman (Khalil Kain) is a petty criminal and gangbanger who in the midst of a shootout with other gangsters accidentally kills a nine-year-old girl. The girl's father, Rueben Tate (Louis Gossett Jr.), is distraught over his daughter's death, but becomes even more upset when no one in the neighborhood will step forward to identify the murderer, even though there were many witnesses to the crime. Rueben enlists the aid of the media and posts signs in the community, hoping to shame someone into naming the killer or forcing him into a confrontation. Charles Fuller adapted Zooman's script from his own stage play; he did the same for the film A Soldier's Story. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Roemello runs the family drug business with the help of an old-fashioned mob boss, Gus Molino (Abe Vigoda), whose grocery is a front for the dealing. Ruben Blades stars in this low-budget independent salsa musical (filmed in Spanish Harlem at a cost of $600,000), chronicling the rise and fall of a salsa artist who wants to hit the big time. He idolizes Julio Iglesias and dreams of putting together a band that will incorporate a blend of musical styles so that Rudy can crossover to mainstream commercial success. The success of the single goes to Rudy's head, and he walks out on his loyal girlfriend Liz (Elizabeth Pena) and drops his long-time manager, Ray (Frank Robles). Filmed in the US but acted in Spanish, El Super is a warmhearted spin on the plight of Cuban exiles in old, cold New York. The coldness is not only figurative but literal: the refugees arrive in the Big Apple in the dead of winter, and hole up in a barely heated basement apartment. "El Super" is lonely building superintendent Reymundo Hidalgo-Gato. Himself a Cuban expatriate of ten years' standing, Hidalgo-Gato feels totally out of place in New York, yet he has very little in common with his newly arrived countrymen. Hidalgo-Gato's appealing star turn is matched by the sprightly performance of leading lady Elizabeth Pena. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
