André Hunebelle Movies
French filmmaker Andre Hunebelle worked on many competently-made mainstream films as a director, producer and screenwriter. Before entering cinema in the '40s as a producer, Hunebelle was a master glassmaker. In 1948, he became a director and continued in that vein through the mid-'70s. In the mid-60s Hunebelle worked on the "Fantomas" film series. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie GuideThis French slapstick comedy stars the musician/comedian foursome Les Charlots, as valets to the Four Musketeers. One of the film's highlights is a mutual kicking session between Cardinal Richelieu, the King, and a monk. This comedy foursome was enormously popular in 1970s France, and they made a huge number of films during that period. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This seedy but effective little supernatural thriller involves a group of seven travelers -- each of whom represents one of the Seven Deadly Sins -- who take shelter in a mysterious baron's haunted castle, where they are visited in turn by a seductive, lingerie-clad succubus (Erika Blanc), who metes out suitable punishment in accordance with their evil deeds. It is revealed that their enigmatic host is a former Nazi general whose family's Satanic legacy includes the birth of a malevolent she-demon into each generation. Only the token priest of the group manages to stand up to the evil forces. A Belgian/Italian co-production; also released as The Succubus, The Devil's Longest Night, Castle of Death and The Devil Walks at Midnight. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Novelist Jean De Bruce's "Bondish" secret agent Hubert Bonisseur de la Bruce--alias O.S.S. 117--is portrayed by John Gavin in O.S.S. 117: Double Agent. De la Bruce disguises himself as a bank robber in order to get the goods on an international criminal organization. He learns that the criminals plan to spark a World crisis by killing an influential diplomat. Like his role model James Bond, O.S.S. 117 finds time to romance a beautiful girl, in this instance Margaret Lee. The "O.S.S. 117" series did well in Europe but failed to catch on in the US, perhaps because the leading role was played by a different actor in virtually every episode. The original French title for this film was Pas De Roses Pour O.S.S. 117. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

O.S.S 117 (Frederick Stafford) is an American CIA operative who is sent to South America to thwart the attempt of a group of underground subversives who want to take over the world. Although classified as a Bond-style spy feature, it lacks the humor and gloss of other films of the genre. Location shots from Brazil are impressive as the sight of routine gun battles. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

This movie is the first in a trilogy that parodied the popular silent Fantomas serials of director Louis Feuillade, which followed the adventures of the titular master criminal created by writers Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain. After a daring jewelry heist signed "Fantomas," police commissioner Juve (Louis de Funès) goes on national television claiming that Fantomas doesn't exist and that there is no reason for public concern. Riding the wave of public interest, journalist Fandor (Jean Marais) publishes a bogus interview with the master criminal. Fantomas (also played by Jean Marais) doesn't appreciate the joke and kidnaps Fandor to teach him a lesson. A master of disguise, he pulls an even more daring robbery wearing the Fandor mask. Comic relief is provided by commissioner Juve's awkward attempts to capture the elusive arch-criminal. ~ Yuri German, All Movie Guide

Set in the 18th century, this French swashbuckler centers on Lagardere (Jean Marais), an adventurer whose life is affected when he decides to help out a nobleman in distress. Time goes by, though not enough to erase the memory of the murder from the adventurer's mind. He decides to disguise himself as a hunchback in order to be accepted into the faction that had the nobleman killed, and from the inside as it were, plots his revenge. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Andre Hunebelle directs this talky, standard costume drama set in the court of King Louis XIII in the 17th century. King Louis (Christian Fourcade) has his problems -- a power-hungry regent is trying to take the seat of government right out from underneath him. In order to stave off this bid for power, the king turns to François (Jean Marais), a swordsman and fighter who swashbuckles better than anyone else. François also incurs the wrath of the king's enemy but is compensated by the fact that the lovely Gisele (Elsa Martinelli) has noticed him. This French-Italian musical starts out in the eponymous French gambling establishment. Vittorio de Sica plays Gordy, an ageing playwright who decides to transform a music-hall singer named Catherine (Caterina Valente) into a dramatic actress. Just as his protegee achieves stardom, Gordy dies. But when Catherine visits her late benefactor's villa, she is romanced by Gordy's ghost, who turns out to be a much younger man (Gilbert Becaud). Rather stagebound, Casino de Paris only comes to life during the all-stops-out musical production numbers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Treize a Table (Thirteen at Table) was based on the hit play by Marc Gilbert Sauvajon. Micheline Presle stars as a woman suffering from Triskadecaphobia -- fear of the number 13. No matter how hard she tries, Micheline cannot avoid the "fatal" number, even in the safety of her own home. The humor arises from the heroine's efforts to make certain that she never has 13 guests at her dinner table -- even if it means inviting an ex-lover to sit in on one occasion. Fernand Gravey co-stars as the former swain, while Mischa Auer offers another of his "professional grouch" routines. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Madeline Robinson stars in the opulent seriocomedy Mannequins de Paris. The plot is one of the oldest known to man: a busy businesswoman nearly loses her neglected husband. Robinson plays the female executive, while Ivan Desny is her spouse, a well-known clothing designer. Inasmuch as Desny is surrounded by gorgeous, undraped women, Robinson is going to have to work overtime to win him back. The film spotlights several of Paris' top fashion models, who are decidedly not on the slender side. Mannequins de Paris was filmed in a short-lived widescreen process called Anamorphoscope. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
