This British gay drama explores the reaction of a British housewife who suddenly discovers that her husband Keith is having an affair with another man. Anna is devastated by the discovery. After her initial hysterical reaction, Anna begins to do some research about homosexuals and their practices. Still angry, she confronts Keith at home. She winds up telling him to quit messing around and throws a dildo at him. Brevity may be the soul of wit, but that doesn't make the 79-minute Blame It on the Bellboy any funnier. Orton (Dudley Moore) is an ambitious real estate agent. Horton (Richard Griffiths) is a middle-aged married man looking for extracurricular activity via a dating service. And Lawton (Bryan Brown) is a professional hit man. Orton, Horton and Lawton all check into adjoining rooms at a posh Venetian hotel. Bellboy Bronson Pinchot, whose grasp of the English language is virtually nonexistent, delivers the wrong messages to the three men. That's why Orton is trying to sell a valuable piece of property to a roomful of mafiosi, Horton is "paired up" with an unwitting female real estate broker, and Lawton is preparing to rub out a hapless dating-service subscriber......Written by director Mark Herman, this old-style doorslamming farce might have passed muster as a dinner-theater attraction, but on film it comes across as strained and tiresome. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Set in 1940s England, Distant Voices/Still Lives is a compassionate look at a radically dysfunctional family. The son and his mother must endure the casual and overt cruelties of the bull-necked father. The ongoing abuse takes its toll in the form of failed marriages and misguided attempts at seeking security outside the family unit. As was the case with his earlier short subject trilogy (The Children, Madonna and Child, Death and Transfiguration), director Terence Davies based much of the material on his own life, combining rheumy-eyed cynicism with soft-edged nostalgia (the musical track, drawn from popular wartime songs, is particularly evocative). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Down on their luck, stranded out on the moors of England, the "Three D's" are a trio of circus performers (a bear trainer and his wife plus the bear) who have attracted the unwelcome attention of a policeman, to whom they appear to be altogether shady characters. Not only that, but after a quarrel, Denise takes off and the bear dies. Don, the remaining member of the trio, attempts to cope with his losses by joining up with a circus, partnered with an attractive widow in a new act. His new trick involves walking up a ladder of razor-sharp swords. Just as everyone is getting settled, the aforementioned policeman shows up, accusing Don of having murdered Denise. After proving him wrong about that, Don is almost back to normal when Denise herself shows up, and everything becomes much more complicated. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
