At times it is hard to tell whether this made-for-TV movie is supposed to be taken seriously or if it is nothing more than a John Waters-style spoof. Yasmine Bleeth and Jill Clayburgh are respectively cast as ambitious beauty contestant Danielle Stevens and her even more ambitious mother Cathy. It is clear from the outset that this pair will stop at nothing to win a prestigious beauty pageant, which naturally casts suspicion on both mother and daughter when the first runner-up is killed. But can it be that the murderer is the boyfriend of the victim, who happened to have been carrying said boyfriend's baby? A federal agent is demoted to a less challenging assignment, only to have it become the most dangerous mission of her life in this action-thriller. Alex McGregor (Mariel Hemingway) is a Secret Service agent who once guarded the President of the United States, Jonathan Hayes (Gregory Harrison). But after a series of misunderstandings following an attempt on the President's life, McGregor has been reassigned to oversee security for Hayes' teenaged daughter, Jess (Monica Keena). Jess has been chafing under the pressures of having a team of agents following her everywhere, so when she makes plans to go on a white-water rafting trip, the President requests a minimal compliment of Secret Service agents. This proves to be a mistake when Jess and her companions are kidnapped by a gang of right-wing terrorists. McGregor is forced to join forces with scruffy wilderness guide Grant Carlson (Doug Savant) in order to find Jess and return her to safety. In the made-for-TV First Target, Daryl Hannah stars as feisty and combative U.S. Secret Service agent Alex McGregor, a role created by Mariel Hemingway in the earlier TV movie First Daughter. This time around, Alex finds herself attempting to prevent the assassination of the President of the United States in a "wide open" Washington State national park. Offering assistance every step of the way is Alex's fiancé, Grant Carlson (Doug Savant), who might otherwise be neglected altogether by the understandably preoccupied heroine. A bunch of college students are stranded in a small town where suffering for art takes on a whole new meaning in this tale of terror. Carly (Elisha Cuthbert) and her boyfriend, Wade (Jared Padalecki), have hit the road with a handful of their friends to attend a championship college football game; tagging along with them are Carly's bratty friend Paige (Paris Hilton, Carly's trouble-making twin brother Nick (Chad Michael Murray), and Blake (Robert Ri'chard), Paige's latest boy toy. While camping out for the night, the gang makes the mistake of getting on the wrong side of a mysterious local redneck, and the next morning they discover that Wade's car no longer works. As the others continue on to the big game, Carly and Wade make their way into the closest town, Ambrose, and discover it's all but deserted, except for a local tourist attraction, the House of Wax. However, it isn't long before they find out why the wax sculptures at the museum look so freakishly real, and discover a pair of murderous brothers are keen on making them part of the next exhibit. House of Wax is an in-name-only remake of the well-remembered 1953 3-D horror outing starring Vincent Price, which was in turn based on the 1933 picture Mystery of the Wax Museum. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This R-rated gem is about an author who produces a novel with characters inspired by real-live Hollywood stars. When the book is turned into a film, the producers throw a party and invite all the films' real-life "characters" to celebrate its release and learn that they are featured in the film. All's well until a body turns up in the author-party host's swimming pool. However, there are plenty more bodies to be seen in this one--the kind with hearts still beating--because this comedy is loaded with nudity. ~ All Movie Guide

This interesting genre-jumping sci-fi/horror film plays much like a low-budget derivative of Alien and The Thing with a clever occult twist. The story takes place in lunar orbit, where a maintenance spaceship becomes marooned after a mysterious accident. Cut off from Earth contact and rapidly losing power, they encounter another derelict craft and its dead, mutilated occupant. They board the other ship to draw on its power plant, taking the corpse aboard for study, and soon discover that the ship was part of the U.S. Discovery program, reported lost after splashdown in the Bermuda Triangle -- at a point in direct line with the moon's dark side. Unfortunately for the crew, the significance of this correlation is discovered too late, as the evil force residing within the dead spaceman's body emerges to take possession of the crew's souls. This leads to a confusing game of "musical souls" as the paranoid survivors turn on each other, never sure which of them is acting under demonic influence. Although not particularly an original concept, this is still a very tense, nightmarish film, with high production values, claustrophobic atmosphere and some nail-biting moments. The filmmakers' attempts to communicate the crew's increasing confusion and paranoia are quite effective, though things go a bit overboard at the climax. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
Her faith shaken by a family tragedy from which she was never quite able to fully recover, a professor of theology from Louisiana State University moonlighting as a debunker of unexplained religious phenomena finds herself faced with an apocalyptic series of events that seem to reflect the ten plagues of Exodus in director Stephen Hopkins' Southern gothic chiller. The terrified citizens of Haven, LA, have been beset by swarms of locusts and watched as rivers turned to blood. As if that wasn't enough to put the fear of God into any Bible-reading Christian, ominous rumors of a local swamp cult have left many of the small-town citizens turning to prayer for fear that the end is finally nigh. Enter Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank), a skeptical myth-buster and renowned theology scholar with a special knack for spotting religious trickery. Though at first exceedingly confident that she will uncover a human component behind the otherworldly occurrences, Katherine quickly learns that just because one doesn't believe in the supernatural doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't exist. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The made-for-TV Twisted Desire could be compared to the 1968 theatrical feature Pretty Poison, the difference being that the earlier film was totally fiction, and the later one based on a true story. In a spectacular example of casting against type, Melissa Joan Hart plays 14-year-old Jennifer Stanton, who despises her dominineering parents (Daniel Baldwin, Isabella Hoffman) so intensely that she fantasizes about removing both of them from the face of the earth. Meanwhile, troubled 17-year-old Nick Ryan (Jeremy Jordan), recently sprung from juvenile detention, is trying to get his act together by working as a gas station attendant. Upon sizing up Nick, Jennifer seduces him, then persuades him to murder her mother and father. The ultimate punishment levied for the crime is bitterly ironic, all the more so because it really happened. Twisted Desire originally aired May 13, 1996, on NBC. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A U.S. marshall tracking a vicious murderer through the Antarctic must locate the killer before the sun sets for six months, or risk being trapped in the dark with the madman for months on end in director Dominic Sena's adaptation of the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka. U.S. marshall Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) has been stationed at Antarctica's South Pole research base for two years, and now after turning in her resignation she's looking forward to finally going home. The last plane out leaves in just three days, and just after that Antarctica will not see the sun again for another 24 weeks. Then, just 72 hours before she is set to escape the coming darkness, a body is discovered in the ice -- prompting the first murder investigation ever to take place on the desolate Antarctic Circle continent. Little does Carrie realize that she's suddenly been thrust into a mystery over 60 years in the making, and that the killer is ready to strike again in order to protect a grim secret.
