Nana Bryant Movies

Cutting her theatrical teeth in regional stock, American actress Nana Bryant appeared steadily on Broadway from 1925 thrugh 1935. Her forte during this period was musical-comedy character work, a field she still cultivated in the 1940s with Song of Norway. Bryant's first film was 1935's Guard That Girl; for the next twenty years she appeared mainly in benign, understanding roles, as typified by her last movie assignment as a kindly Mother Superior in The Private War of Major Benson (1955). That same year, Bryant had a six-month run as Mrs. Nestor, owner of a private school, on the popular TV sitcom Our Miss Brooks. So firmly associated was Bryant in motherly roles that she quite took the audience's breath away when playing a nasty character. Even Nana Bryant's daughter-in-law, who knew the real woman as well as anyone, could not bear watching Bryant portray a steely-eyed murderer in the Roy Rogers western Eyes of Texas (1949). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A too-tough Army major gets himself sent to run an ROTC program at a Santa Barbara military school after he calls unwanted attention to the military by mouthing off to a prominent news magazine. When he arrives to his new post, the major is shocked to find it run by nuns and that his new troops are school children. His assignment is to make "men" out of the rambunctious recruits so that the school can keep from losing its ROTC certification. At first the hard-as-nails major treats his young charges with all the tenderness of a old army boot and the boys, tired of his constant barrage of insults and demands, come to hate him. Further complicating matters is the major's disconcerting romantic feelings for the school's lovely doctor. Unfortunately, she isn't about to put up with his ultra-macho guff anymore than the children are and before this romantic comedy is through, the major learns important lessons about the value of humanity in dealing with others. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The doctor then tells them a story and this story is the original 1950 film of a sexually repressed and unresponsive bride who ends up trying to kill herself. That is, until Elwood begins claiming that he sees a "pooka" (a mischievous Irish spirit), which has taken the form of a man-sized bunny named Harvey. Although everyone is certain that Elwood has finally lost his mind, Harvey's presence begins to have magically positive effects on the townsfolk, with the exception of Elwood's own sister Veta (Josephine Hull), who, ironically, can also occasionally see Harvey. A snooty socialite, Veta is determined to marry off her daughter, Myrtle (Victoria Horne), to somebody equally respectable, and Elwood's lunacy is interfering. When Veta attempts to have Elwood committed to an insane asylum, however, the result is that she is accidentally admitted instead of her brother. Hero Rogers doesn't buy the official party line that the killings have been perpetrated by wolves, especially after he befriends and tames one of the huge beasts, so he divides his time between singing his usual quota of songs and bringing the baddies to justice. Finally, the old "Ransom of Red Chief" twist is given to the tale of hoboes Fred MacMurray and William Demarest, who find themselves at the mercy of a preteen prankster, whose wealthy uncle (Hugh Herbert) won't take the kid back unless the hoboes pay him. Meredith returns to the newspaper office with a black eye, which earns him the sympathy and affection of coworker Paulette Goddard. Philip Reed stars as crusading newspaper editor Steve Wilson, while Hillary Brooke portrays Wilson's ever-loving, ever-efficient "Girl Friday" Lorelei Kilbourne. Vowing to rid his community of the stench of Yellow Journalism, Wilson assumes command of the Illustrated Daily Press, utilizing his tabloid as a bastion of truth and a weapon against big-city corruption. Crusading against a local crime ring, Wilson unfortunately goes "too far", and is nearly destroyed by lawsuits before he can redeem himself.
