In a thought-provoking treatment of the deep-rooted turmoil of war veterans, debut director (David Nutter) has fashioned a fast-paced story about Vietnam vet Tim Murphy (Don Johnson) and his struggle to regain both self-respect and emotional equilibrium. Tim suffers from nightmares, and there is nothing his loyal wife Paula (Lisa Blount) can do to prevent them, nor can she do much to help him get a job. She is hampered even further by Tim's bad temper -- he flies off the handle at friends and family alike. One day, Tim meets a fellow Vietnam vet in the unemployment line, and the two quickly become good friends. When tragedy later strikes, Tim faces an important decision about his future on his own. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Impulse, is a tawdry, low-budget exploitation film about a maniacal murderer possessed by evil demons. Matt Stone (William Shatner) is a paranoid, con-man and gigolo who seduces lonely women and then bilks them of their savings using an investment scam. Then he kills them. When he begins seeing an attractive widow, her daughter Tina (Kim Nicholas) becomes suspicious of his motives. Then Tina herself is in danger. Impulse, directed by William Grefe, is the absolute nadir of Shatner's acting career and consequently has become a camp, cult classic and a must see for fans of Shatner. All others beware. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

A Seminole Indian and Vietnam veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome uses his cold-blooded companions to seek vengeance against the people who killed his father in this horrific frightener from director William Grefe. Tim Ochopee (Chris Robinson) has been deeply scarred by his battlefield experiences. Upon finishing his tour of duty and returning to his home in the Everglades, all Tim wants is to live peacefully in the wilderness with his pet snake "Stanley." Upon discovering that his father has been killed under suspicious circumstances, however, Tim finds Stanley a mate and begins breeding the pair. Before long, Tim has a shack full of hungry snakes just waiting for a decent meal. That meal comes when Tim decides to sick his slithering friends in slimy snakeskin manufacturer Richard Thompkins (Alex Rocco). Infuriated that Tim would refuse his offer to purchase the snakes and transform them into tacky apparel, Thompkins hires a psychotic hitman (Paul Avery) to put the snake-loving vet in the ground. But Thompkins and his volatile gun for hire have underestimated the unusual bond that Tim shares with his snakes. Now, as Tim and his serpents come out to play, the poison begins to flow and the screaming starts. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The violent, gruesome world of international drug runners provides the basis for this grim, exploitation actioner. The story centers on the leader of a gang of dope peddlers who sail out to meet a Cuban boat loaded with heroin. The meeting occurs, and as a preamble, they smoke a little pot with the Cubans and then rob them after destroying their boat. As they race off across the water, they see a Coast Guard cutter heading toward the fire. Quickly the crooks stuff the narcotic in waterproof containers and toss it overboard with the intent of getting it later. While they do this a young couple, out for a romantic cruise witnesses them and calls the Coast Guard themselves. The film gets gory at this point as the desperate drug-dealers murder the Coast Guard officers and abduct the couple. They take them to their lair on the Seminole Indian reservation, and a gang member savages the girl. From there more murder and violence ensues as the desperados attempt to flee the FBI in the Everglades. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

There's an underwater menace haunting the Everglades, killing local fishermen in horrible ways and stealing equipment from a nearby research laboratory. Despite the presence of danger, marine biologist Dr. Richardson (Jack Nagle) welcomes his daughter Karen (Valerie Hawkins) and her sorority sisters to his home on the canal for a relaxing weekend of swimming. Karen meets Dr. John Hoyt (Joe Morrison), the doctor's handsome assistant and sparks fly; she also fends off the affections of Egon (John Vella), the ugly, awkward jellyfish researcher who has always loved her from afar. Egon is treated with derision by the other members of the team, and all of Karen's friends are uneasy around him, so the scarred, sensitive recluse becomes even more withdrawn. When a boatload of dance-crazed biology students arrives for a beer blast, the eerie half-man, half-jellyfish monster makes an appearance and attacks a beautiful girl in a swimming pool. Panic ensues, with deadly results. The scientists struggle to understand just what they're up against, while the murders continue and Karen is eventually targeted by the weird mutant monster. Famed pop star Neil Sedaka provides two numbers for the soundtrack, including the ska-flavored teen dance hit "Do The Jellyfish." ~ Fred Beldin, All Movie Guide

The Tartu of the title refers to a foul-tempered Seminole sorcerer (Doug Hobart) who returns from the dead as a crusty ghoul to torment and destroy a group of young archaeology students who unwittingly violate his grave during field studies in the Everglades. Tartu assumes the shapes of a variety of local fauna to exact his revenge, including a venomous snake (with remarkable acrobatic qualities) and a ferocious alligator; he even takes the form (for reasons unknown) of a not-so-indigenous man-eating shark. Not before we witness the ultimate horror of Tartu camping it up in a pair of nylons (don't ask), the villain eventually falls victim to one of the swamp's many treacherous patches of quicksand. This drippy backyard nonsense made the late-night cable TV rounds before sinking into much-deserved oblivion. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
