Lee Grant Movies

Primarily a stage actress, Lee Grant has also been distinguished for her feature film and television work. She was born Lyova Rosenthal in New York City and received her training at Juilliard. The daughter of an actress and model, Grant was only four when she debuted in a show at the Metropolitan Opera. Grant joined the American Ballet at age 11, graduated from high school at 14, and then received a scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse where she was seen by stage director Sidney Kingsley who cast her as a young shoplifter in his 1949 Broadway production Detective Story. The role won Grant a Critics Circle Award. She reprised the role in the 1951 film version and earned an Oscar nomination and the Cannes Festival's Best Actress award. Her promising film career abruptly derailed when the House Un-American Activities Committee tried forcing Grant to testify against her already blacklisted playwright husband, Arnold Manoff. She refused and was promptly blacklisted. Though her stage career thrived, it would be 12 years before Grant would be able to get substantial roles in television or movies. By the time she returned to the media in the mid-'60s, she was relegated to character roles wherein she typically played ambitious, tough, and beautiful women. During the second season of the sudsy television drama Peyton Place (1964-1969), Grant won an Emmy for her portrayal of Stella Chernak. In 1970, Grant won her second Oscar nomination for Hal Ashby's The Landlord and her first Oscar for Shampoo (1975). But for yet another Oscar nomination in Voyage of the Damned (1976), Grant the actress spent the rest of the decade making cameo appearances in big-budget disaster pictures. In a small Southern town, the McDermott family has owned and operated a popular chicken restaurant for years. Each of the three McDermott boys, Brian (Tim Quill), Kit (Dermot Mulroney), and Duncan (Sean Astin) expects to inherit part of the business from their father (Jim Haynie). While enjoying liberal amounts of skirt-chasing, marijuana-smoking, and alcohol consumption in their off hours, the McDermotts have big plans for the place, but then dad drops a bombshell -- he's sold the restaurant without consulting his family, leaving each son to struggle with his newfound, unwanted independence. In the meantime, mom (Melinda Dillon) considers reuniting with her old band. Instead, she lets the common suffering they express serve as an overarching comment on a society that has turned a blind eye to the needs of its weakest members. As the trio continues down the road, Nick starts to feel wildly jealous of Monica's interest in the Maori and is getting irked at Riki's references to white settlers and their treatment of Native New Zealanders. In this informative documentary (an unusual approach to looking at the nature of sexual identity), director Lee Grant interviews several Americans who have undergone sex-change operations. As of 1985, about 2500 Americans a month undergo operations that transform them from male to female, or vice-versa. Grant provides the history-making precedent of Christine Jorgensen, an American soldier who went to Denmark for the operations that would change his gender. After some black-and-white television coverage of the "new" Christine, she is interviewed here again, about 30 years later. As Grant points out, the combination of operations and hormonal therapy changes more than the physical aspects of the individual -- the effect on one's emotions and social interactions can be devastating, and so counseling is often provided. In one instance filmed by Grant, a man regretted his decision, but there was nothing that could be done to reverse the changes. Viewers may want to compare this documentary to Teit Ritzau's work on transvestites and sex change, Paradiset Er Ikke Til Salg (Paradise Is Not for Sale), which takes a slightly different approach to the topic. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The story in this two-part TV biopic was probably "untold" mainly because it was untrue. According to the revisionist script by Stirling Silliphant, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini (overplayed by George C. Scott) may have been a fascist, a tyrant, a mass murderer and an intimate of Adolf Hitler, but he also had his warm and fuzzy side. This was manifested in his genuine love for his gorgeous mistress Clara Petacci (Virginia Madsen), whose devotion to Il Duce was equally strong, so much so that she willingly went to her death along with him when the Axis collapsed and the ex-dictator was summarily shot. Despite his extramarital shenanigans, Mussolini had plenty of affection left over for his long-suffering wife Rachel (Lee Grant) and his children. With a cast comprised largely of non-Italians (notably the aggressively Irish Gabriel Byrne as Mussolini's son Vittorio), this epic had more phony dialects than a Marx Bros. picture. Despite its distant relation to the facts and its flaccid treatment of one of history's darkest periods, Mussolini: The Untold Story (filmed not in Italy but in Yugoslavia) garnered respectable ratings when it was originally telecast by NBC on November 24 and 26, 1985--and also earned a brace of Emmy award nominations. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this slow-paced (until the end), low-budget thriller with an excellent cast, Rosemary (Annie Whittle) is a normal mother involved in cross-country racing, who decides to leave her husband and two older children for six months to live in a remote section of the New Zealand coast, photographing and writing about penguins. Her family visits her on the weekends, and Francis, one of her friends, comes by fairly often as well. The problem is that Rosemary's two neighbors do not really want her around, and soon her beach shack is vandalized. When blood is smeared on her family photos, Rosemary has no doubt that someone is seriously out to do her harm unless she leaves -- but her work is not yet finished. In 1976, the women working in a bank in Willmar, Minnesota become incensed because less-qualified men are being promoted over them. Head teller Jean Stapleton, with the help of attorney Peter Dvorsky and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, organizes an employee's union. When the chauvinistic bank officers cause negotiations to break down, Stapleton and seven other female employees go on strike--a job action which lasts for two years, despite political and social pressure from the community. Based on the autobiography of actress Frances Farmer, Will There Really Be a Morning? was originally telecast on February 22, 1983 -- only a few months after the "rival" Farmer biopic Frances hit movie-theatre screens. Whether Susan Blakely is superior to Frances' Jessica Lange is open to debate. It is certain that Morning adheres more closely to the facts, principally because adaptor Dalene Young (a specialist in such true-life "perseverance" TV movies) drew her inspiration from Farmer's own words. The premise of the TV movie is that most of Frances' well-documented personal problems, including her drug abuse and mental illness, can be traced to her stormy relationship with her mother (Lee Grant). Director Lee Grant has put together an incisive and clear documentary on eight women who went out on strike against their employer - a bank in Willmar, Minnesota. The women were not only passed over for managerial positions, they were required to train the all-male managerial staff who would be their supervisors. Using spontaneous interviews with townspeople, as well as interviews with the eight women and local labor leaders, the deep roots of gender prejudice are slowly pulled up for everyone to see. The church supported the men and the bank, the labor unions talked a lot and did nothing, and the townspeople backed off from any involvement. A National Labor Relations Board, in the end, ruled in favor of the bank. As a consequence, the women not only lost their jobs along with their demands for equality, they were not gainfully employed since the strike. The bank did poorly after the strike and was eventually sold, and work conditions for women in banks in the state of Minnesota were subsequently improved.
