Andrés Vicente Gómez Movies

As one of Spain's most powerful and prolific producers, Andres Vicente Gomez has played an important role in revitalizing his nation's cinema, bringing it out of the international art houses and into the mainstream. Gomez became involved with film in the '60s as a film distributor. Though Franco was still in control of Spain, Gomez was somehow able to circumvent the dictator's rules and smuggle in many foreign films. In the early '70s he teamed up with Orson Welles. Gomez produced his first film, La Loba y la Paloma (The Wolf and the Dove) in 1974. By the mid-'80s, Gomez had produced a number of films. During the 1990s, Gomez was behind over 30 films for established directors such as Bigas Luna, Carlos Saura, Richard Lester, Pedro Almodovar, and up-and-comers such as Alex de la Iglesia. Between 1990 and 1997, his films were produced through Lola Films. In 1993, Gomez produced Belle Epoque, which earned an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The backstage intrigue behind the creation of one of the world's great operas provides the story for this historical drama from director Carlos Saura. Lorenzo Da Ponte (Lorenzo Balducci) is a defrocked priest who, after a failed marriage and a spell running a brothel, has found himself in Vienna, where his gifts as a poet and friendship with Casanova (Tobias Moretti) have led to an introduction to composer Salieri (Ennio Fantastichini). Salieri has been commissioned by the Viennese court to write an opera and is in need of a lyricist. Da Ponte agrees to write the libretto for Salieri's latest project, but when the composer becomes disinterested, he passes the opera on to one of his associates, Mozart (Lino Guanciale). As Da Ponte juggles both serious and casual relationships with several women and Mozart struggles with his muse, their adventures become a reflection of the story Da Ponte and Mozart are setting to music. Io, Don Giovanni (aka I, Don Giovanni) was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Planet 51 is an alien world populated by extraterrestrials who reside in a society that bears a striking resemblance to 1950s-era American suburbia: white picket fences abound, drive-in movies are all the rage, and the constant fear of an alien invasion keeps the citizens of this oddly familiar world constantly gazing into the stars in anticipation of the worst-case scenario. When a mysterious spaceship touches down and a strange astronaut from the planet Earth emerges, it seems like Planet 51's greatest fear has finally become a horrifying reality. Former video-game artist Jorge Blanco directs a computer-animated alien invasion film with a twist penned by Shrek trilogy scribe Joe Stillman. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The daughter of a 16th Century Spanish nobleman strives to transcend her role as a woman in society and achieve something truly profound in this period drama starring Paz Vega and Geraldine Chaplin. Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada (Vega) knows well what is expected of her as a woman existing in a man's world, but she refuses to accept it. Convinced that she is capable of accomplishing much more than being a loyal wife and loving mother, Teresa enters a convent intent on writing, reading, learning, and living a full, richly textured life. Much to Teresa's dismay, the same vapid materialism and frivolity that seemed to have consumed the outside world have somehow found their way into the hallowed halls of this convent as well. In protest, Teresa embarks on a crusade of prayer and sacrifice that initially finds her branded a lunatic by those in power. But over the course of time something truly profound happens: a woman once considered mentally unstable gradually evolves to become a celebrated leader and, ultimately, a true saint of the highest order. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

With his English-language political thriller The Feast of the Goat, action helmer Luis Llosa cinematizes Mario Vargas Llosa's sweeping, epic novel about the myriad of events leading up to the assassination of a real-life tyrannical despot. The story opens in 1992, when a Dominican émigré attorney, Urania Cabral (Isabella Rossellini) leaves her new home in the U.S. and heads back to her native country, for the first occasion in decades. She intends to confront her father, 80-year-old Augustin (Tomas Milian), about his former employment in the government of the supremely corrupt dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (Tomas Milian). The film then flashes back to the events surrounding the assassination of Trujillo on a highway in late May of 1961, by delving into the lives and motives of each of the participants - from Amadito (Juan Diego Botto), whom Trujillo forced to execute his future brother-in-law, to that victim's father (Murphy Guyer), to Antonio (David Zayas), the brother of an incriminating witness whom Trujillo's men executed. One by one, as their stories are disinterred, the assassins gather on a nighttime road, brandishing guns, and prepare to shoot Trujillo and throw his body into the trunk of a car. Paul Freeman, Stephanie Leonidas and Richard Bekins co-star; Llosa co-authored the script with Augusto Cabada and Zachary Sklar. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

A teacher takes on the corrupt leadership of an Irish reform school in this drama based on a true story. William Franklin (Aidan Quinn) is a teacher who was born in Ireland and moved to the United States only to repatriate in 1939 after his leftist political views cause him to lose his job. Franklin becomes the first non-cleric instructor at St. Jude's, a school for wayward boys run by Brother John Iain Glen, who is a firm believer in strong discipline. But Franklin comes to believe the students are being treated with excessive force, with many of the children severely punished for trivial violations of the rules, and some treated as delinquents for the crime of not having parents. As Franklin campaigns for more humane treatment of his charges, he makes a powerful enemy in Brother John, who responds to Franklin's reform efforts with greater vehemence against the students, in particular Mercier (John Travers), an inquisitive child who has become a favorite of Franklin. Franklin's distrust of Brother John's regime reaches a high point when a new student informs him that he was sexually assaulted by one of the clerics. Song for a Raggy Boy was adapted from the memoir by Patrick Galvin, who also helped adapt his story for the screen. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Torrente, the thick-headed cop from the successful Spanish comedy Torrente: El Brazo Tonto De La Ley, is back on the beat in this sequel, which actually outdoes the low comedy of the first film. In his second go-round, Torrente (once again played by Santiago Segura, who also wrote and directed the film) has managed to squander his savings while enjoying life (and chasing women) in the resort town of Marbella, so he goes back to work, finding employment as a private detective, with dope-addled ne'er-do-well Cuco (Gabino Diego) signing on as his assistant. Through a series of misunderstandings, Torrente ends up crossing paths with Spinelli (Jose Luis Moreno), a corrupt international arms dealer, and when Spinelli threatens to blow up Torrente unless he receives a ransom of two billion pesetas, the bumbling skirt-chaser becomes the only man who can prevent the destruction. Torrente 2: Mision En Marbella features cameo appearances from a number of popular Spanish comics and television personalities; the first film was one of the biggest grossing homegrown features ever in Spain, and the sequel's box-office success led many to predict Torrente could become the subject of a long-running series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
