Terry Gilliam Movies


For most of Terry Gilliam's early career, fans of the popular comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus assumed that he was British, since Python's other five members were natives of Britain. But the innovative animator and future director, who spent more time behind the scenes than in front of the camera, was actually the troupe's only American member. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 22, 1940, Gilliam was briefly employed as an assistant editor for Help! magazine (a job that introduced him to English comedian John Cleese, who was in NYC posing for a comic photo-strip in the magazine); he then emigrated to England in 1967. Soon after gilliam arrived in the U.K., he began working on Do Not Adjust Your Set, a popular children's TV show, developing his eccentric animated cartoons, which put into motion a hodgepodge of images, including photographs, cutouts from magazines, and famous works of art. Gilliam's contributions to the show were geared more toward adults, as his surrealistic stream-of-consciousness segments, drenched in black humor, were beyond the grasp of most children.

In 1969, Gilliam was asked by Cleese and others to join the absurdist comedy troupe Monty Python. In addition to writing for Monty Python's Flying Circus, Gilliam also contributed his animated interludes, for which he was pretty much left to his own devices; the other Pythons just told him how much time he needed to fill and never gave him any narrative direction. Gilliam began offering his iconoclastic vision to moviegoers with the comedy troupe's first original film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), which he co-directed with fellow Python Terry Jones. An instant cult classic, the movie contained all the requisite Python elements: absurdist humor, self-referential parody, and extremely quotable dialogue. The following year, Gilliam had his first outing as a solo director with Jabberwocky (1976). Based on the poem by Lewis Carroll, the film featured a medieval setting similar to that of Holy Grail and starred Pythonite Michael Palin. Along with Python's brand of irreverent humor, the film featured glimmers of the visual resplendence that would become the director's trademark. But critics found it awkward and repetitive, and audiences largely stayed away.
Following Jabberwocky's relative failure, Gilliam regrouped with his fellow Pythonites, co-creating The Life of Brian, the tale of a man with the misfortune of being confused with Jesus Christ. He left the directing duties to Terry Jones, focusing on animation, screenwriting, and acting. Gilliam returned to directing with Time Bandits (1979), a surreal journey through history led by a small boy and several dwarves. Bearing many similarities to Jabberwocky, Time Bandits relied less on repetition and moved the audience more briskly from one scene to the next. It did well at the box office and put Gilliam in the ranks of directors to watch.

After co-directing with Terry Jones the third and final Python film, Monty Python's the Meaning of Life (1983), Gilliam made what many people consider his masterpiece, the dystopian satire Brazil (1985). Instead of journeying back to the Middle Ages, Gilliam boldly predicted a retro-1930s future of anonymous office drones commanded by an all-powerful computer. Blindingly imaginative, the film starred Jonathan Pryce as Sam Lowery, who attempts to escape the stifling bureaucratic system by fantasizing about being a superhero, and later by actually battling the powers-that-be in his own cowardly fashion. Consistently blurring the line between fantasy and reality and uncompromising in its surreal eccentricity, Gilliam's masterwork has been called Orwellian, Kafkaesque, and Luddite. A failure at the box office, Brazil has made up for that disappointment with its cult status. In addition to critical praise and a Los Angeles Film Critics award for Best Film, Gilliam received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

It was four years before Gilliam stepped behind the camera again, for The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1989). Returning to historical fantasy, Gilliam tells the unlikely tales of the title character as though they really happened. The Baron explores the inside of a volcano, takes a hot air balloon to the moon, gets swallowed by a whale, and quells a war that he himself started. Munchausen's stories were less well known to most Americans than to audiences in Britain, where the film won British Academy Awards for Best Production Design, Best Makeup, and Best Costume Design.

Gilliam followed Munchausen with his most accessible work to date, 1991's The Fisher King. Foregoing much of his usual ornate visual style, the director focused on characters rather than flashy spectacle; the relationships among a depressed former DJ (Jeff Bridges), his enabling girlfriend (Mercedes Ruehl, in an Oscar-winning performance), and a homeless man (Robin Williams) who saves him from suicide are intertwined in a riveting, funny, and ultimately heart-warming way. Gilliam balances humor, pathos, and story-telling, while avoiding mawkishness. He received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director, and the movie won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival.

Gilliam returned to the director's chair in 1995, achieving his biggest box office hit with the science fiction epic 12 Monkeys. Starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt (in an Oscar-nominated performance), the movie tells the story of a prisoner from the future sent back in time to save the world from a catastrophic virus. But the scientists of 2035 haven't quite mastered the art of time travel, and they accidentally send Bruce Willis' character back to 1990 instead of 1996. The film was a critical and commercial success despite its hard-to-follow plot, allowing Gilliam the freedom to take even more creative risks. His next project, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 novel, was the ultimate "trip" movie. Detailing Thompson's drug-addled journey to the gambling capital of the world, it starred Johnny Depp as the author's alter ego, Raoul Duke. The movie was the perfect vehicle for Gilliam to create an alternate universe fueled by the mind-bending substances in which the lead characters freely and plentifully indulge. With melting faces, a lounge full of human-sized lizards, bats flying in the desert, and a demon with breasts on its back, the movie didn't need and didn't really have a plot. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was the definition of a love-it-or-hate-it movie.

In 2000, the director began working on Good Omens, a comedy/fantasy based on the book Good Omens: or, The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, a humorous story about the apocalypse. That endeavor fell by the wayside, however, when Gilliam attempted to film his lifelong dream project, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, in late 2000. From injured actors to faulty props to inclement weather conditions, the $30 million shoot became a textbook example of Murphy's Law, and was shut down despite pleas from the haggard director. In 2003, however, the project found new, unexpected life in Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe's documentary Lost in La Mancha, a comic tale of cinematic defeat. Intended as a "making-of" featurette to be included on the finished film's DVD, the documentary chronicled the morose fate of Gilliam's botched production in all of its painful, hilariously unbelievable glory, and became a minor art-house attraction. Gilliam subsequently fought to buy back the rights to The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in light of all the renewed interest, but it remained to be seen whether the director would get a chance to finish what he started. ~ Eric Bloch, All Movie Guide

This colorful spoof of pirate movies had all the makings of a classic farce and yet sank straight to Davy Jones' locker at the box-office, for despite it's all-star international cast of famous comedians, and despite the fact that it was largely co-written by "Monty Python"-veteran Graham Chapman and former "Fringie" Peter Cook, the darned thing just wasn't funny. The sketches center around the core story of the dread pirate Yellowbeard's quest for a fabulous treasure, the map for which is tattooed on the head of his prissy son, who wants nothing to do with ships and pirate shenanigans. And of course, there's the scene with the world's most voracious glutton, who brings the art of vomiting to new heights before his spectacular demise. Be warned: though hilarious, this may be the grossest bit of comedy filmmaking ever conceived (there aren't enough words in the world to describe it in detail!). This 77-minute collection of skits and blackouts features stalwart Pythoners Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, together with semi-regulars Carol Cleveland and Neil Inness. The troupe's stream-of-consciousness humor transfers well to the L.A. stage; even the most familiar and time-worn bits -- including a TV quiz show featuring such contestants as Marx, Lenin and Mao -- elicits loud laughter from the enthusiastic audience. Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam mostly achieves a tricky balancing act in his second feature as sole director, creating a dark, irreverent comedy disguised as a family adventure. Particularly amusing are the boy's encounters with various historical figures, including an entertainment-starved Napoleon (Ian Holm), a powerful Agamemnon (Sean Connery), and a surprisingly stuffy Robin Hood, embodied by Gilliam's Python cohort John Cleese. Episodic by nature, the film is less successful when dealing with the larger narrative, which concerns the pursuit of the dwarves and their time-traveling map by the Supreme Being. On a midnight clear 2,000 years ago, three wise men enter a manger where a babe is wrapped in swaddling clothes. It is an infant called Brian...and the three wise men are in the wrong manger. For the rest of his life, Brian (Graham Chapman) finds himself regarded as something of a messiah -- yet he's always in the shadow of this other guy from Galilee. Brian is witness to the Sermon of the Mount, but his seat is in such a bad location that he can't hear any of it ("Blessed are the cheesemakers?"). Ultimately, he is brought before Pontius Pilate and sentenced to crucifixion, which takes place at that crowded, nonexclusive execution site a few blocks shy of Calvary. Rather than utter the Last Six Words, Brian leads his fellow crucifixees in a spirited rendition of a British music-hall cheer-up song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." An innocent country farmer experiences a number of improbable misadventures that culminate in a battle against the titular beast in this broadly comic fantasy. The first solo outing of director Terry Gilliam, who served as animator and co-director on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, returns to the medieval setting that had previously served him so well, and brings along fellow Pythonite Michael Palin for the ride as reluctant hero Dennis Cooper. Cooper's journey to defeat the fearsome Jabberwock is filled with a similar combination of traditional fairy-tale narrative and irreverent humor, which at times aims to be even raunchier than classic Python fare. From its opening multi-language titles (that sure looks like Swedish) to the closing arrest of the entire Dark Ages cast by modern-day bobbies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail helped to define "irreverence" and became an instant cult classic. This time the Pythonites savage the legend of King Arthur, juxtaposing some excellently selected exterior locations with an unending stream of anachronistic one-liners, non sequiturs, and slapstick set pieces. The Knights of the Round Table set off in search of the Holy Grail on foot, as their lackeys make clippety-clop sounds with coconut shells. A plague-ridden community, ringing with the cry of "bring out your dead," offers its hale and hearty citizens to the body piles. A wedding of convenience is attacked by Arthur's minions while the pasty-faced groom continually attempts to burst into song. The good guys are nearly thwarted by the dreaded, tree-shaped "Knights Who Say Ni!" A feisty enemy warrior, bloodily shorn of his arms and legs in the thick of battle, threatens to bite off his opponent's kneecap. A French military officer shouts such taunts as "I fart in your general direction" and "I wave my private parts at your aunties." Rabbits are a particular obsession of the writers this time around, ranging from the huge Trojan Rabbit to the "killer bunny" that decapitates one of the knights. The broadcast in question features the "Worst Family in Britain" finals, with the grotesque Garibaldis placing third despite strong support from the Liberal Party. An Icelandic Honey Seller explains why he is selling something that can't be found in Iceland. A doctor promises to save his patient's life in exchange for history-quiz answers. Mrs. Long-Name learns how to finish her sentences, enabling her to host a program starring Richard Attenborough. A camera crew literally chases after the Walking Trees of Dahomey, while the dreaded Batsmen of the Kalahari do battle against the Warwickshire team. In this episode, England is held in thrall by Mr. Neutron, the deadliest man in the world. As Mr. Neutron enjoys the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Entrail, the Federal Egg Answering Room (F.E.A.R) tries to ascertain Neutron's whereabouts. The only man capable of saving humanity is Teddy Salad, who is somewhere in the Yukon, breeding rabbits. Captain Carpenter discovers that Teddy is posing as a sled dog, and lures him away with a pretty bone. The naked Supreme Commander declares all-out war on Neutron by bombing the wrong cities. By the time Neutron is finished, the only city left standing is Ruislip in the Gobi Desert, and Neutron's sweetheart Mrs. S.C.U.M. has been elected the most beautiful woman in the world by default. One of the few Monty Python's Flying Circus programs to feature a single sustained sketch, "Mr. Neutron" first aired November 28, 1974. The Melancholy Dane's sexual hang-ups are dissected by two bogus shrinks, at which point Dr. Bruce Genuine saves the day. The comfy chair used by the host of "Nationwide" is identified as having been stolen from Mrs. Edgeworth. A bride's father shares a bed with his daughter and her husband for the purpose of building a model ship. In "Boxing Tonight," the fight ends when the champ loses his head and arms, just as he'd done in the past six bouts. Mrs. Gorilla, Mrs. Non-Gorilla, and Mrs. Non-Smoker try to watch a soap opera, but end up spouting Shakespeare instead. The fourth and final season of Monty Python's Flying Circus was launched on October 31, 1974, with the episode titled "The Golden Age of Ballooning." The Montgolfier Brothers develop a lighter-than-air craft with the reluctant assistance of Joseph Montgolfier's fiancée Antoinette, who makes a very lovely gondola. Louis XIV shows up in 1783, oblivious to the fact that he's been dead since 1717. Pioneer British aerialist Sir Charles Dividends shows up on a talk show with Lord Interest and King George III, who is then serenaded by the Ronettes (their song, "King George the Third," was written by Neil Innes, who later collaborated with Eric Idle on The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash). Ferdinand Von Zeppelin inflates his brother Benny, while the bodies of failed aviators drop into the living room of Helmut and Holweig. Carol Cleveland, Peter Brett, Frank Lester, Bob E. Raymond, and Stenson Falke make guest appearances, but John Cleese is conspicuous by his absence, as he would be in the five remaining "Python" installments. On his own, Chris attends a poetry reading, in which Wordsworth, Shelley, and Keats dedicate their poems to ants not named Marcus. His next stop is Toupee Hall, where a faulty flame-thrower left over from the first sketch wreaks havoc. Just before entering the End of the Show Department, Chris is informed that Michael Ellis Week is over, and Chris Quinn Week has begun. As they had done in the summer of 1972, the cast of Monty Python's Flying Circus appeared on a 50-minute special for German television in October of 1973. Highlights of "Monty Python Bloeden fur Deutschland" include a visit with Superbutcher!, a profile of famed mice and fish preserver Frank Tutankhamun, a hearing-aid sketch, a fairy story about Happy Valley's King Otto ("Ya de buckety rum ting poo") and Princess Mitzi Gaynor...and best of all, the "International Philosophy Tournament," featuring German and Greek Philosophers squaring off in a football game (Nietzche was disqualified for arguing with referee Confucius). Unlike the first German "Python" special, this one received a British TV screening on BBC2. Sometime between seasons two and three of Monty Python's Flying Circus, the series' cast appeared in a 50-minute special that aired exclusively on German television. Popularly known as "Monty Python in Deutschland," this filmed special consisted almost entirely of new material, save for a sketch in which "Colin 'Bomber' Harris'" wrestles with himself. Other bits included a running gag involving an Olympic torch runner, an interview with a Frenchman who had been to the toilet only once in five years (a fact confirmed by such celebrities as Richard Nixon and the Pope), an all-cow version of The Merchant of Venice, and a "traditionally" violent bill of fare at a Bavarian restaurant. According to the late Graham Chapman, the special aired opposite an English-German football match, leaving the Pythonites with an audience comprised entirely of critics. A bitter coal-mine strike is sparked by an argument over the Treaty of Utrecht and Greek Architecture. Mr. Pudifoot appears on "Toad Elevating Moment," refusing to come to the point. "Fish Club" elicits suggestions from the Board of Irresponsible People. Herbert Mental steals eggs from birdwatchers, then stages a pigeon fanciers' race through Trafalgar Square. A doctor leads a group of severely crippled patients through a military close-order drill. The men of the 14th Marine Command star in a production of "The Naughtiest Girl in School," followed by a reenactment of the Battle of Normandy by the girls of Oakdean High School. And a series of cannibalism jokes is interrupted by the disgusted studio audience. "Farming Club" presents the life of Tchaikovsky, using a huge model of the composer's body. The star of Chekhov's The Seagull loses enough weight to appear in a miniature production of The Great Escape.
