A simple brotherly joke goes hilariously awry in director Stewart Wade's zany tale of mistaken sexual identity. Todd's brother Barry wants to help his single sibling out by setting him up on a blind date. While all signs lead to a perfect match, it soon becomes obvious that Barry is having a little fun at his brother's expense when the Kelly in question turns out not to be a beautiful woman, but a homosexual male. Upon realizing that they have been duped by Todd's mischievous brother, the unlikely couple soon forms a warm friendship while concocting an elaborate scheme to one-up the unrepentant prankster. When Barry sees Todd and Kelly holding hands soon thereafter, he becomes convinced that his brother is, in fact, gay, and phones the pair's mother to break the news. As Todd's mother begins to see his son's disdain for sports and love of film as clear signs of his homosexuality that she has somehow managed to overlook, she determines to show her son that she will love him no matter what his lifestyle. Enter cousin Dana (Nicholas Brendon), who's shed both the closet and his clunky last name for a fabulous existence in the gay hot spot of Chelsea. Aided by a phalanx of similarly stylish friends (including one played by Deborah Gibson), Dana transforms Celeste from a frizzy-haired, bespectacled mouse to a glamorous vixen. Soon Celeste finds herself hanging out with a hunky, sexually ambiguous neighbor (Ethan Embry) and pursuing a romance with an ethically questionable editor (Michael Boisvert). Full-figured Broadway actress Marissa Jaret Winokur, who won an Emmy award for her performance in the musical version of Hairspray, is felicitously (if somewhat incongruously) teamed with slender soap opera heartthrob Mark Consuelos in this uplifting made-for-cable comedy. Although she's not what one could call beautiful or svelte, Becca Wasserman (Winokur) possesses a beauty that emanates from within: she also happens to be great singer, with a great career as a teacher and a super-great fiancé named Adam (Consuelos). All Becca lacks is the money to afford her dream honeymoon to Hawaii. Partly to get even for being snubbed by the gorgeous Libby (Reagan Pasternak), and partly just to prove that she can do it, Becca enters the The Miss Squirrel Hill beauty pageant, the first prize of which is two free tickets to the Aloha State. But though everyone is pulling for Becca, the plain cold fact of the matter is that no "super-sized" woman has ever won the pageant--and even Becca's mom Amanda (Fran Drescher), hitherto her daughter's biggest booster, is certain that Becca is going to make a fool of herself. One-time musician Martin Guigui, who played more than his share of weddings, wrote, directed and stars in this comedy based on his experiences. Guigui portrays Max Tune, whose band is playing the wedding reception of his former girlfriend, Lisa Weinstein (Deborah Gibson, better known as one-time teen pop star Debbie Gibson). Lisa is marrying Bobby Benigni (Joey Scheer), but unknown to Lisa, Bobby has already been cheating on her with Diane Dare (Susanna Voltare), Lisa's maid of honor and best friend. Diane, racked with guilt, starts easing her pain with tequila at the reception, while Lisa's mother makes her feelings about the entertainment very clear to Max.
