In the fourth of the Hallmark Channel's feature-length "Sherlock Holmes" tales, Holmes (Matt Frewer) and Watson (Kenneth Welsh) investigate a series of savage murders apparently committed by a vampire -- and all occurring in the same Whitechapel district previously terrorized by Jack the Ripper. Holmes' services have been engaged by Brother Marstroke (Shawn Lawrence), who years earlier had lost an entire mission in British Guyana to an invading horde of rabid bats. Can it be that those long-ago bats and the current wave of killings are the handiwork of the legendary demon vampire Desmondo? The ever-logical Holmes doubts this theory...or at least he doubts it at the beginning of the story. The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire debuted October 27, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Matt Frewer stars as Sherlock Holmes in this made-for-TV mystery based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Mary Morstan (Sophie Lorain) is a pretty young governess, whose father, serving as an officer with the British Army in India, vanished six years ago while returning to England. Each year on the anniversary of Captain Morstan's disappearance, Mary has received a small but expensive bit of jewelry from an anonymous benefactor, and when one year the gift is sent with a message requesting a meeting, Mary retains the services of detective Sherlock Holmes (Frewer) and his assistant Watson (Kenneth Welsh). Holmes discovers the gifts and the message were sent by Thaddeus Sholto (Marcel Jeannin), whose father served with Captain Morstan in India; while serving as guards at a prison, Major Sholto and Captain Morstan encountered a group of thieves who had stolen a fortune in jewels and murdered the owner. Sholto had the loot shipped back to his estate in England shortly before Morstan went missing, and when Sholto fell ill, he made his son promise to share the fortune with Morstan's daughter. However, now the jewels are gone, and Thaddeus' brother has been murdered, leaving Holmes and Watson to find the loot and the murderer before anyone else is killed. The Sign of Four was the fifth screen adaptation of Doyle's second novel. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Former Max Headroom star Matt Frewer made his first appearance as master detective Sherlock Holmes in this well-appointed adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. On this occasion, Holmes and his chronicler Dr. John Watson (Kenneth Walsh) set about to protect young Sir Henry Baskerville (Jason London) from falling victim to what seems to be an old and inexorable family curse. Eventually the two sleuths converge upon Baskerville Hall, near the dreaded Grimpen Mire, where a huge and voracious hound threatens the wellbeing of all concerned. But who is really behind the sinister plot against Sir Henry -- and is anyone involved in the case truly whom he or she claims to be? Largely filmed on-location at Montacute House in Somerset, England, The Hound of the Baskervilles made its American TV bow over the Odyssey cable network on October 21, 2000, and seven days later debuted in Canada courtesy of CTV. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Two former stars of Melrose Place reunite for this story that trades in soap opera glamour for the grittier thrills of a psychological crime thriller. Karen (Daphne Zuniga) was born to a wealthy family and has never quite found her way out from under the wings of her overprotective parents. Karen is seeing an analyst, but she's also having an affair with him -- which does not make her unusual among his female patients. When her psychiatrist/lover is killed after one of her appointments, Karen becomes the police's prime suspect; she decides to play with the truth and tells the police that she can no longer remember what happened that day. On the advice of her lawyer, Karen begins working with another psychiatrist, Dr. Peter Rexler (Jack Wagner), in hope that he can help her recover her memories of her last meeting with the doctor. But Karen's forgetful act works all too well when Peter, unable to get to the bottom of her repressed memories, has her institutionalized. Artificial Lies also stars Stewart Bick, Maxim Roy, and Claudia Ferri. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Canadian director Rodney Gibbons helmed this adaptation of the 1871 Louisa May Alcott classic, previously filmed in 1935 and 1940. Alcott followed Little Women (1868) and Little Men with a third book in the series, Jo's Boys (1866). This 1998 family film was evidently prompted by Gillian Armstrong's successful 1994 Little Women adaptation with its potent cast (Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Samantha Mathis, Christian Bale, Gabriel Byrne, Eric Stoltz, Mary Wickes, John Neville) and impressive production values. In Little Men, urban urchins Nat (Michael Caloz) and cocky Dan (Ben Cook) usually find trouble just around the corner. About to be nabbed for theft, Nat gets lucky after a kindhearted benefactor intervenes. While Dan continues to survive on the streets, Nat arrives at peaceful Plumfield -- the school managed by Jo (Mariel Hemingway) and Fritz Bhaer (Chris Sarandon) -- where he reforms and finds a new way of life. But then Dan arrives at Plumfield, the Bhaers take him in, and the tranquility is shattered. Dan has an immediate influence on life at the school after he introduces such activities as drinking, poker, and fights. Although Fritz objects, Jo decides to give Dan a chance. When problems persist, Dan is sent away -- and several ethical and moral lessons are underscored when Dan eventually rejoins the Plumfield camaraderie. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

This action-packed sci-fi thriller is set upon the planet Sirius 6B in the year 2078. The planet has been decimated by a vast nuclear war. Many have survived, but their continued survival is threatened by the dreaded screamers, strange shape-changing mechanical creatures who use razor sharp knives to hack up any life-form in their way. They earned their name because when they kill, they make a horrible high pitched sound. The first screamer makes its appearance as a lone soldier approaches a bunker. He has come to deliver an important message from the NEB to its enemy the Alliance. Unfortunately, the low flying screamer gets to the soldier first, and quicker than Popeil's Vegamatic, slices and dices the fellow into tiny pieces. Later a jet crashes near the bunker. Aboard it is a nuclear reactor. One man survives the crash. The man, Ace, knows how to make a bomb with the reactor. Alliance-leader Col. Joseph Hendricksson takes Ace and they travel across the great irradiated desert to met with the NEB leaders. Along the way they find a small boy and though they don't want to, bring him along. Unfortunately, by the time they get to the NEB headquarters, the screamers have killed all but Becker, a tough soldier, Ross, who is nearly mad, and sexy smuggler Jessica. When Becker and Ross see the boy, they think he is a screamer and kill him. They are right and soon the little group find themselves surrounded by the hellish killing machines, all of which have taken the shapes of small boys. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This low-key Canadian thriller stars Rod Steiger as Myron Hatch, a deranged gynecologist who has an unhealthy obsession with his late mother's memory. After Hatch puts his family home up for sale and moves into the adjacent house, a yuppie couple, Mary and John Westhill (Linda Kozlowski and Ron Lea), set their sights on the property. Hatch's latent mania is unleashed the moment he sees Mary -- a dead ringer for his late mother -- and his obsession with her begins. His less-than-subtle attempts to maneuver himself into her life are nearly thwarted by John's fears of losing his job, and Hatch resorts to murder to keep Mary near him. This oddly unsettling PG-rated film stars Adam Hand-Byrd as Digger, a 12-year-old whose parents are going through serious domestic problems. He has a great deal of difficulty adjusting to his new environment, but soon he and the locals are the best of friends. A subplot concerns grandma Dukakis' rollicking romance with suave Leslie Nielsen.
