Unlike his sleazy, anti-erotic Dark Bros. porn films, director A. Gregory Hippolyte's mainstream efforts tend to be sleek, stylish, and erotic like this popular item, a kinky thriller based on a true story. Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2) plays a voyeuristic cop, and Shannon Whirry is his neglected wife. They start bringing home tricks from a classified ad, and Whirry plays with them while Caulfield covertly observes via hidden camera from another room. At first it appears that the couple has solved their marital problems, but things get ugly when one of sleazy bar owner David Carradine's goons answers an ad and gets dirt on the heroes. Caulfield is forced to videotape his wife with Carradine's political rival (Jan-Michael Vincent) in order to protect himself. The angry Caulfield then tries to turn the tables on Carradine, who is blackmailing him, and ends up marked for murder. A solid genre entry, silkily photographed and filled with familiar faces and great bodies, Animal Instincts is one of the more entertaining entries in a seemingly endless cycle, and was followed by two sequels. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

When she figures out his sick game, she dumps him. Later a homicide detective tells the woman that he and his partner think that the artist is a brutal serial killer. Meanwhile the artist, who has videotaped her sexploits, begins blackmailing her with the threat of telling her husband. Then she learns that her husband is the mastermind behind the whole situation with the artist because he wants her to get into S&M with him. The excessive violence in this action thriller makes New York City look like the site of a civil war -- or rather, a nauseatingly uncivil war fought between factory workers allied with neighborhood citizens against their enemies: drug pushers and other low-lifes. At first the worker Eddie Merino (Robert Forster) refuses to join a vigilante movement, but when his wife is stabbed and his son killed by a Puerto Rican gang, Eddie eventually opts for his own right to kill. His decision is not allowed to come quickly, he is made to agonize a bit longer. When the gang leader (singer Willie Colón) who killed Eddie's son is caught and brought up for trial, he gets off with a suspended sentence because of a corrupt defense lawyer and an inept judge. Eddie attacks the judge in court and is sent to jail for contempt. When he gets out of jail, he becomes a vigilante, out to kill the guilty or those he sees as protecting the guilty in the death of his son. A combination of alchemy, architecture, and horror, director Dario Argento's Inferno is a pulsing thriller filled with murder and supernatural mayhem. The peculiar proceedings are set into motion in both New York and Rome when two young women, Sara (Eleonora Giorgi) and Rose (Irene Miracle), find a book called The Three Mothers, a tome of alchemy written by an architect named Varelli. According to the book, Varelli built a trio of resting places for the Three Mothers, an evil trio whose identities remain at the core of the film's mystery. Rose's brother and Sara's boyfriend is Mark (Leigh McCloskey), a music student in Rome who jets to New York after Sara is murdered and Rose disappears. He follows up Rose's research on The Three Mothers and, with the help of his sister's neighbor, Elise (Daria Nicolodi), comes to the realization that the building they are in is one of Varelli's. Along the way, Mark encounters a variety of quirky characters including Elise's butler (Leopoldo Mastelloni), the building's maid (Alida Valli), a cat-hating bookseller named Kazanian (Sacha Pitoeff), and the infirm Professor Arnold (Feodor Chaliapin) and his nurse (Veronica Lazar). After a series of murders and a revelation that the butler and the maid have been plotting to steal Elise's jewels, Mark discovers a secret series of passages within the building. They lead him to its core where he finds the wheelchair-bound Professor Arnold, who explains that he is really the architect Varelli. After a violent struggle, the dying old man confesses to Mark that he is merely a servant to the Mothers. The building begins to burn out of control, but before Mark can escape, he discovers the shocking identity of the Three Mothers. ~ Patrick Legare, Rovi
