In this standard auto-racing-mixed-with-murder tale from Down Under, a gang steals and then strips cars to sell the parts for profit but meets their match when they literally run into Steve, a young racecar driver, and some tow-truck operators. From that point onward, mangled metal appears on the scene regularly, as Steve pursues his career as well as the people who caused his own father's disappearance. Steve has some help from his father's partner Tom (Max Cullen), and his two pit-stop mechanics (Bruce Spence and David Argue), but his love interest Ruth (Gia Carides) is only a token woman in a nearly all-male world. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Martin Scorsese's satirical comedy/drama caustically explores the lengths to which a nobody will go to be as famous as his idol. Practicing his patter in his basement with cardboard cut-outs of his favorite celebrities, mediocre aspiring comedian Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro) believes that one appearance on the evening talk show of the Johnny Carson-esque Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis) will be his ticket to stardom. After he helps Jerry escape the advances of amorous fan Masha (Sandra Bernhard), Rupert takes Jerry's patronizing brush-off as a true promise for an audition and begins haunting Jerry's office. Provoked by Masha's needling and a rejection from Jerry's smooth production exec Cathy Long (Shelley Hack), Rupert makes a disastrous trip to Jerry's country house with embarrassed date Rita (Diahnne Abbott), then hatches an even more outlandish scheme to get ahead. With Masha's help, Rupert kidnaps Jerry and demands as ransom the TV appearance that he believes will turn his fantasy into reality. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

Three young women contend with the rougher side of night (and day) life in the big city of Sydney as one of them gets ready to take off on a flight to New York. The women go to nightclubs, bars, and the beach, they trip out on drugs, one tries to land a job, another tries prostitution for a short while, and through it all, the friends alternately argue and make up -- all within an 18-hour span of time. A tragic postscript to the film: actress Vera Plevnik who played one of the three women (Jane) was killed in a car crash not long after the movie was completed. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

After receiving a cryptic warning while playing with a Ouija board, a young woman (Joanne Samuel) becomes more than a little apprehensive about her upcoming 19th birthday party. It seems her late father is sending her a message, attempting to dissuade her from attending the celebration at the cottage of her aunt and uncle -- where a secret society of Druids plan to offer her body as a vessel for an ancient Celtic god. This small, low-key Australian production features some interesting plot twists and a fair amount of suspense, and is marked by the appealing presence of Samuel (the doomed wife of Mel Gibson's Mad Max). Produced by actor David Hemmings and released initially in 1979, the film was eventually picked up for U.S. distribution in 1984. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

In Queensland, Australia in the 1920s, a rugged Irishman bucks the encroaching modern age to the detriment of himself and his family in The Irishman. Michael Craig plays Paddy Doolan, an individualistic force-of-nature who runs a team of imposing and impressive Clydesdale draught horses. With the internal combustion engine making inroads into the Australian outback, Doolan insists on ignoring the on-coming mechanical monstrosity and continues to put all his faith into his horse team. His recalcitrance tears apart his family -- consisting of his acquiescent wife Jenny (Robyn Nevin); his rebellious older son Will (Lou Brown); and supportive younger son Michael (Simon Burke). Refusing to give in to changing times, he not only ends up destroying his business and his family but himself as well. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
