Based on the tell-all autobiography by Nick Leeson, Rogue Trader tells the true story of how one man managed to bring down England's best respected merchant bank. Ewan McGregor plays Leeson, an ambitious young man from North London who is hired by the Barings Brothers Bank and sent to Indonesia to help untangle some problems with bearer bonds. Leeson does well enough to earn a transfer to Singapore, where he's put in charge of Barings' staff at the Singapore International Money Exchange. The Asian economy is booming and a variety of new financial strategies are changing the shape of the marketplace; while his superiors in London are a bit baffled by the range of possibilities, Leeson takes to the work like a duck to water, and he's soon trusted to do as he pleases. This eventually proves to be his downfall; without a separate team watching the accounts in the back office, Leeson is soon juggling figures to cover up for certain mistakes and gambling on the market with the bank's funds, not just their clients'. In 1995, Leeson's schemes finally collaped, leaving Barings bankrupt; Nick and his wife (another Barings employee) tried to flee the country to avoid arrest. Leeson was eventually sentenced to six-and-a-half years in a Singapore prison for his financial misdeeds; he was released after four years and four months, a week before Rogue Trader opened in British theaters. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This documentary features an interview by David Frost with 1992 independent presidential candidate Ross Perot. Perot, a Texas billionaire and an electronics company CEO, decided to run for president when he became disenchanted with the two party political system of the United States, stating that it was unresponsive to the needs of its citizens. This message of accountability, plus Perot's offbeat, incisive wit, made him a popular figure, who early on in the presidential race actually led the polls. His insistence on fiscal responsibility by reducing the national debt struck a chord with the public. Perot's influence caused the major party candidates to reassess their positions. Many people were shocked and disappointed when Perot suddenly withdrew from the race, stating that his continued presence might be disruptive. The quixotic Perot changed his mind again later, and re-entered the race, using his vast fortune to promote his campaign. He never regained his previous standing in the polls, but his presence on the ballot may have determined the outcome of the election. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide

Director Herbert Freed has been exploring juvenile issues in dramas for over twenty years. Curiously, the title of this film is an exact duplicate of that for his 1978 television series pilot depicting a quite different set of teen issues. In this story, Samson is a rootless, troubled young boy who has gotten put in a juvenile facility for committing a series of minor offenses. His mother is a drug addict who is senselessly promiscuous: his half-brothers and sisters come in all colors, and few if any know who their father is. It turns out that Samson is pretty bright, and he begins to take an interest in more than pranks when he meets up with a sympathetic teacher. One of his fellow prisoners is the brother of a crime lord, and after the two escape from the facility, they go to work for him. Soon enough, Samson is in even more trouble and his buddy is dead, but if he can evade the gang lord, he might still be able to pull his life together. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This 56-minute video celebrates 25 years' worth of inspired lunacy from Britain's Monty Python's Flying Circus. Loyal Pythonites John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam are interviewed, offering surprisingly sobersided insight as to what made their zany aggregation tick. Highlights include vintage clips from the Monty Python TV series, as well as vignettes from the group's theatrical features and concert appearances. As a bonus, we are treated to rare vignettes never before shown on American television. If you've never been exposed to such classic routines as "Dead Parrot", "Lumberjack" and "Department of Silly Walks", don't pass up this opportunity. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Renowned actor, producer, and television personality David Frost serves as narrator and co-writer of this documentary examining the twilight years of notorious SS doctor Josef Mengele, who earned the nickname "Angel of Death" for the reprehensible experiments he conducted at Auschwitz, and took flight from Germany following World War II to avoid being charged with war crimes. For forty years following World War II, Mengele was one of the most wanted war criminals on the planet. Having fled to Italy, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil after fighting ceased, Mengele successfully managed to elude his pursuers and avoid prosecution; ironically surviving to live out his final years in a secluded, multi-cultural Brazilian society. But why was Mengele never captured, and would it be possible for such a grim moment in human history to be repeated in the future? By traveling to ten countries around the world and speaking with the very people who knew Mengele best, the producers attempt to uncover the mystery of the war criminal most called a monster while inquiring as to how he eluded justice long enough to live out his golden years in relative comfort. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Take a comprehensive look at the Watergate scandal and explore the controversial career of the only United States president ever to resign from office as former President Richard M. Nixon sits down with probing journalist David Frost for an illuminating series of live, unscripted interviews. His fall from power was nothing short of spectacular, yet still Nixon remains one of the most fascinating and complex political figures of the entire 20th Century. In addition to serving as Nixon's first public appearance since his high profile resignation, these interviews offer candid insight into the mind of the man who stood at the center of American during a particularly turbulent era in our nation's history. Though Nixon's second term in office was cut short following the 1972 break-in at Democratic Party headquarters in Washington, D.C., journalist Frost attempts to get to the bottom of the Watergate scandal by engaging the former Commander in Chief in a candid and penetrating series of interviews. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Add James Michener's Dynasty to QueueAdd James Michener's Dynasty to top of Queue
James Michener's Dynasty is aptly named. This TV movie is indeed based on a novel by Michener, which does indeed cover thirty five years (1820-1855) in the lives of a land-rich family. Harris Yulin and Stacy Keach play the Blackwood brothers, a pair of enterprising Ohio pioneers. The ongoing rivalry between the older Yulin and younger Keach is intensified when Yulin's wife Sarah Miles leaves her husband in favor of Keach. As the brothers try to outdo each other in business, the Blackwood land empire grows to epic proportions. Unfortunately, this TV movie does not; at 2 hours, there just isn't enough time to do justice to Michener's sprawling novel. James Michener's Dynasty is worth noting for the supporting-cast contributions of Amy Irving and Harrison Ford. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Like Socrates of ancient Athens, Michael Rimmer (Peter Cook) of modern England believes the key to success is to ask the right questions. Lots of questions. So he gets a job with an advertising agency that conducts polls, rises swiftly through the ranks, and eventually runs the agency. Then he bombards England with questions. His ingenious system enables him to predict the outcome of a general election. (Every voter in England had received a questionnaire.) So accomplished is Rimmer at asking questions that he finds his future wife through market research. To insure that he gets the right answers, Rimmer is not above manipulating the polls. For example, when he asks residents of Coventry their religion, 95 percent identify themselves as Buddhists, thanks to an influx of Rimmer stooges. Then he enters politics. In a short time, he gets himself elected to Parliament, becomes a cabinet minister and eventually moves into Ten Downing Street as prime minister after pushing the incumbent prime minister off an oil platform. By this time, every eligible voter in Britain can cast ballots with a television remote control. Alas, the electorate tires of the endless referendum questions that they must answer as part of their daily routine. This development serves only to catapult Rimmer to further success, for the people decide to place all decisions in his hands as dictator of England. So Rimmer keeps rising and rising and rising. And asking questions. ~ Mike Cummings, All Movie Guide
