Daveigh Chase reprises her role as Samantha Darko in this sequel set seven years after the events of director Richard Kelly's acclaimed cult hit. The day Donnie Darko died, his family died too. Almost a decade later, eighteen year old Sam still feels the loss every day. She longs to become a professional dancer, and decides to take a road trip to California with her best friend Corey (Briana Evigan). When their car breaks down just outside the dusty small town of Conejo Springs, carefree Corey bides her time waiting for a new water pump to arrive by striking up a friendship with local bad boy Randy Holt (Ed Westwick). The following morning, a meteor crashes to the ground nearby, destroying a local farmer's windmill and leaving a gaping crater in the ground. In the aftermath of that unsettling incident, Sam's disturbing prophetic dreams seem to start spilling over into the real world. Could the people around her prove the key to unlocking this unearthly mystery? Unfortunately for Sam, religious fanatics Trudy Potter (Elizabeth Berkley) and Pastor John Mellit (Matthew Davis) seem more interested in spouting religious clichés that pondering the end of the world, and Randy and the locals are too busy partying to notice that events are coming to a head. When the locals begin to gossip, Sam and Corey's friendship starts to suffer, and the pair have a bitter falling out. Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a bright and charming high-school student who also has a dark and willfully eccentric side; he does little to mask his contempt for many of his peers and enjoys challenging the authority of the adults around him. Donnie is also visited on occasion by Frank, a monstrous six-foot rabbit that only Donnie can see who often urges him to perform dangerous and destructive pranks. Late one night, Frank leads Donnie out of his home to inform him that the world will come to an end in less than a month; moments later, the engine of a jet aircraft comes crashing through the ceiling of Donnie's room, making him think there might be something to Frank's prophesies after all. The rest of Donnie's world is only marginally less bizarre, as he finds himself dealing with his confused parents (Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne), his college-age sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal), his perplexed analyst (Katherine Ross), a rebellious English teacher (Drew Barrymore), a sleazy self-help expert (Patrick Swayze), and the new girl at school who is attracted by Donnie's quirks (Jena Malone). Donnie Darko was the first feature film from writer and director Richard Kelly; Drew Barrymore, who plays teacher Karen Pomeroy, also lent her support to the project as executive producer. Just how bad are things going to get for Emily Hall (Dedee Pfeiffer)? At 28, she's finally finished her first novel only to see it rejected by every publisher to whom it's submitted. However, this is small potatoes compared to her personal life. She's just broken up with her long-term boyfriend (Eric Close) who can't commit to a permanent relationship. Her best friend Amber (Laura Leighton) is moving to Mexico after being offered an acting job south of the border. And her mother (Teri Garr) has given her some very interesting news. Even though Emily has been told for years that her father is dead, it seems mother was lying and Dad is alive, well, and an aging hippie named Yogi (Howard Hessman) who wants to meet his daughter. Soon, Emily has sunk into such a deep depression that she cheers herself up by imagining her own death. Desperate to take her mind off her problems, Emily volunteers at a local hospital and makes friends with an elderly patient, Mr. Finch (Burt Remsen), who helps her to gain a new perspective on life. Flush with success from writing the hit film Scream, Kevin Williamson created the teen drama Dawson's Creek for the fledgling WB network. The series was quickly embraced by a large teen following. A rating success from the outset, Dawson's Creek never earned much critical praise. However, spawning hit songs and film careers for the four lead performers, the show left an indelible mark on the pop culture of its time. In the course of five seasons, the show saw Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), Joey (Katie Holmes), Pacey (Joshua Jackson), and Jen (Michelle Williams) fall in and out of love with each other and with new additions to the gang. The show occasionally courted controversy by including an affair between Pacey and his high-school English teacher, and by showing television's first ever onscreen kiss between two gay teens, but the squeaky-clean image of the cast always managed to deflect any serious protests. A pair of New York City cops collaborate on a plan to rob a cash-packed subway train in this action-comedy. Charlie (Woody Harrelson) and John (Wesley Snipes) are not just co-workers and close friends but also foster brothers. Because of this family connection, the reluctant John becomes involved in the more capricious Charlie's far-fetched scheme to rob the "money train" that collects the subway's daily grosses. Charlie needs the money for gambling debts, and robbing the train would have the added benefit of angering Charlie's and John's harsh, corrupt boss Captain Patterson (Robert Blake). Romantic interest is provided by a fellow police officer (Jennifer Lopez) who sparks rivalry between the brothers, but the film's main interest is in the violent events that surround the attempted heist, which naturally proves more complicated than planned. The film attempts to capitalize on the chemistry between Snipes and Harrelson, who had previously had a hit comedy with White Men Can't Jump (1992), but Joseph Ruben's unexceptional direction and a bland screenplay by Doug Richardson and David Loughery make the film less distinctive than its predecessor. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide
