A '40s-era fighter pilot accepts a drunken bet to shoot down at least five enemy aircraft as he heads off to war, subsequently realizing that there's more on the line than he initially thought. New Year's Eve, 1944: Lieutenant Mike Clark (Andrew Keegan) will be shipping out to Europe soon, but for now he's drinking the night away in grand fashion. Striking up a conversation with a mysterious stranger named Vito (Karl Shiels), Mike accepts a 10,000-dollar wager to become a certified war ace. The catch? Vito isn't just your average benevolent patriot, but the nephew of notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone. Now, in order to avoid the wrath of public enemy number one, Lieutenant Clark takes to the skies with guns blazing. But just as Lieutenant Clark prepares to shoot down his fifth German plane, he's forced to make an emergency landing in Ireland. Will Lieutenant Clark find a way to repair his plane and make good on his wager, or has he already flown his final sortie? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Women of the world beware -- the world's least likely male pleasure machine is back in business and breaching international boundaries in this sequel to the comedy hit Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for his career as a lover-for-hire, Deuce (once again played by Rob Schneider) is back to work as a gigolo when his former manager T.J. Hicks (Eddie Griffin) is accused of murdering a number of male escorts in Amsterdam. Needing to raise money for his friend's legal defense, Deuce is once again showing off the tricks of the trade in the European theater, while also dealing with the less-than-genial European Union of gigolos, a British school for male prostitutes, and some truly puzzling female clients. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

At the Millennium Building in NYC, the elevators have a problem... they just can't stop killing people! Pregnant women, skater dudes -- they're all on the menu for these possessed motorized beasts. As elevator repairman Mark Newman (James Marshal) delves deeper into the mystery, everyone from his boss to the building manager stand in his way. His only help comes from Jennifer Naomi Watts, a nosy reporter that smells a cover-up when she sees it. As the "accidents" pile up, the President and FBI get involved as the heroic couple come face to face with technology gone horribly, horribly wrong. Down is a direct remake (shot for shot at times) of director Dick Maas' early 80's cult flick The Lift. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

For his fourth feature, Dutch director Alex van Warmerdam based this dark Dutch comedy on his own play about power struggles within a menage a trois at an isolated farmhouse where dull-witted farmer Brand (van Warmerdam) lives with his overweight wife Keet (Annet Malherbe), who is unable to bear a child. Since Brand is illiterate, Keet invites bright city gal Lena (Ariane Schluter) into the house to give Brand some book learning. As Brand becomes attracted to his curvy teacher, he gets encouragement from Keet, who makes him tell Lena that he and Keet are brother and sister. Lena moves in, and Brand is soon trapped between the two women. Keet represses her natural hostility toward Lena and moves into the background as Lena gives birth to Little Tony. At this point, Keet plans to get rid of Lena, but there are complications and twists. Shown in the Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Tired of the laziness of her King, the Queen decides to vigorously attack her rivals. With elements to please both children and adults, this Dutch comedy drama follows the exploits of Sara and her Queen as they work to bring her estranged parents back together. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The action in this dark Dutch comedy centers upon the creation of the title garment and shows the adverse affects it has upon the lives of those involved with making, selling and wearing it. Each stage of the dress's life is punctuated by an excerpt from a nearby person's life which in turn adds something (usually negative) to the almost magical garment. Grim things tend to happen to whomever dons the dress, including humiliation and near-rape. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This is a satire about movies and moviemaking, and a movie about a group of actors and technicians who have come together to make a movie. As often the case in such movies, the movie-within-a-movie is the key to the rest of the story. In this one, Boy (Orlow Seunke) runs a decrepit gas station in a remote location. Everthing is fine for him until Buzz (Kees Van Kooten) builds a brand new, state-of-the-art gas station right next door to him. Further problems arise when Boy falls in love with Buzz's daughter. On the set, the two men are also rivals, in this case for the affections of an actress. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

As a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Queen Beatrix on the throne, the Dutch government commissioned this documentary. Nope, it's not about everyday men-in-the street. Neither is it a laudatory royal family soap opera. Instead, it shows the creative process of five notable Dutch artists. Each is shown manifesting his characteristic tics and quirks. The first is choreographer Hans van Manen, who makes faces at himself when he can't realize the moves he's imagining. The second is sculptor Carel Visser, who grunts at his work and holds conversations with his mongrel dog. The third is artist, composer, and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw; the fourth is the painter Armando, who whistles as he daubs. The final artist shown at work is the poet Ida Gerhardt. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Now here's something you don't see every day: a skin-diving serial killer. Then again, since this melodrama takes place in Amsterdam, a town with almost as many canals as Venice, why should we be surprised that a murderer would swim from one killing to the next? A detective who isn't particularly fond of water tries to bring the finny fiend to justice. Essentially a B-grade slasher flick, Amsterdamned is distinguished by unexpectedly high production values. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

When Jan (Cas Enklaar) visits his father (Geert de Jong) on his deathbed, he tries to reconcile for years of mutual animosity. Flashbacks are used to tell the story of the family's struggles beginning in the 1930s and through World War II until the 1960s. The family is trapped in a love-hate cycle that belies the Protestant religious foundation that serves as faith. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Welcome to The Beverly Hillbillies, Dutch style. Nelly Frijda, Rene Van't Kof, Tatjana Sinic and Huub Stapel star as the low-rent, low-class Flodder family. Through a miracle of scripting, the Flodders move to a prosperous neighborhood. The resulting comedy highlights are all predicated on the old culture-clash gimmick. Flodder was popular enough to inspire two movie sequels (one of them tantalizingly titled Flodders in America), as well as a Dutch TV series, which ran from 1993 to 1995. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Before she became the wife of historian Kenneth Durand in 1950, Helen van Dongen was a celebrated film editor with a career going back to the end of the silent era. This documentary looks both at the woman and her work and is highlighted by excerpts from films she edited (Spanish Earth, Louisiana Story and many others). Her career spanned several continents, as she either studied, worked or taught in Berlin, Paris, Moscow, and New York -- ending up in Vermont after her marriage, and the end of her film career.

This satirical Dutch film was the debut of its director-writer-star, Alex Van Warmerdam. Abel is a 31-year old man who still lives with his parents and is petrified of the outside world. His parents try their best to socialize him -- in some very funny scenes -- before his father (Henri Garcin) finally kicks him out. Abel does adjust and even finds love, the catch being that his paramour (Annet Malherbe) happens to be his father's mistress. Van Warmerdam's theatrical background is very much in evidence, as the cinematography (by Marc Felperlaan) and set design recall nothing so much as an off-Broadway play, albeit an occasionally hilarious one. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Black humor dominates in this macabre story about a murderously animated elevator and its repairman Felix (Huub Stapel) and Felix's voluntary new assistant Mieke (Willeke van Ammelrooy), a reporter for a tabloid paper. When the elevator decapitates a security guard and tries to suffocate some party-goers, it becomes obvious that it needs more than a 60,000-mile check-up. After Felix narrows down the possibilities to some experiments his company is doing with microchips, he is coincidentally suspended from his job -- indicating that the elevator is not acting alone. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
